Absolutely fantastic tutorial. No useless chit-chat, the little color highlights over the relevant gauges was a fantastic touch. Please continue making videos like this.
Many of the terms he uses a pilot would not say. Other than a few mistakes this is routine engine run steps except you have to know more precautions and all the limits of APU and engines, along with emergency shutdown procedures.
He’s not. This isn’t how ground ops flow in the A-10 and his ops limits he’s using are wrong. He’s also flipping switches and turning things on way out of order.
We do appreciate the comments. He takes days planning these, and it takes me hours to edit in all the highlights and stuff, so for all the work we put into these, it is nice to hear someone is getting what they need from it.
If my bank account would allow me, I would stay home and truly learn to fly like you guys, but unfortunately as a truck driver with his company, time does not allow, but if it did, I would want to be the second wing man to you guys. The fun you guys are having right now.
It's 2021 with powerfull computers inside a Mobile Phone, and yet, we're stuck in several hundred switches, levers and buttons. It should be an one step process, with verbal command: 1. Start the engine But you did a very good job at explaing the current situation. Thank you ☺
It's great to watch this video multiple times, this is my second time, the first I was lost and didn't retain much, however I find that this time around it's starting to make sense, it helps to see the control panel sections for their general functions, like left side for engines, right side for lights, power, computer and comms, and gauge sections for their respective functions etc, then it's easier to focus on the individual buttons and switches. It's like with learning anything new, you try to completely learn as many things as possible so that your brain goes on auto pilot for that item of knowledge, then you can focus on something else, do that for as many things in the aircraft as possible then it starts feeling "natural" to fly it. Think of learning like programing your brian (which is actually what is happening since you are creating new neural pathways).
There are several DSC A-10C Start-Up videos, but this is Clearly THE BEST, no others are even close. Thanks VERY much for all your work and dedication making these Outstanding Tutorials.
Your tutorials are probably the best when it comes to DCS. Information is awesome and your explanation of what intruments are and there functions are very clear and easy to follow. Hopefully there will be more vids like this in the future. Well done!!
Dude. I've been trying so hard to learn how to startup properly, I've been using the in-game tutorial to no avail. This tutorial here is the best I've seen anywhere on the internet. Thanks so much, I can finally move up from the FC3 and SU-25T and fly a proper sim. You have my eternal gratitude for this. I will most definitely subscribe, like and share this vid, and I will also check out the rest of the tutorials that you put up. Thanks again, George.
This vid alone prompted me to go out, buy a flight stick, buy the A10 DLC, and start taking notes like i was in class. Why haven't i played flight sims before? Man i cant wait til im running combat missions.
You sir are awesome, I will be referring to this video and taking notes an awful lot. Thank you for not only explaining the procedure but the function and purpose of each switch and knob. This will be an invaluable resource for me. I Decided to buckle down and learn this aircraft no matter how long it takes me. Tmaster Warthog HOTAS, Tflight rudder pedals, and trackir 5 arrive tomorrow and the adventure begins. I expect it to take months to become proficient but I cant wait to tackle this beast. Thanks again.
I'm sure you noticed that afterwards but... SEAT NOT ARMED hehehe! Great tutorial, it's good to know what everything is for. As stated in the video, this was a step-by-step startup. When you are confident enough, you can streamline the process. You can do several stuff at the same time and easily go through the whole procedure in under 7 minutes. The only real time consumer is the satellite alignment. It takes forever to hit that T=4.00.8 mark! I always flip the CDU and EGI early in the process so by the time its ready i am done with most of the other stuff.
Great video, just built a computer, and I have bought the thrust master warthog flight system, quite a bit of money spent on this high end system and equipment. Looking forward to joining the ranks even though I know it will take a considerable amount of time. Thanks for this, very detailed indeed.
Nice videos indeed, just a couple of notes: 1) as mentioned before, arm your ejection seat (you should have check your caution lights panel and then you would have noticed this) 2) IIRC flaps should be set to Movement when taking off, although I'm not sure? 3) obviously you should turn on the radio's and tune to the appropiate frequencies (with ATC being the absolute minimum) 4) Turn on Pilot heating ;) All in all nice detailed video, same goes for the other training vids. Love em, great work!
+JetlinerX hey man, im new to this sim and i was just wondering what set up you use to control your view in this video because its really smooth, the best ive seen so far. thanks
Good stuff my friend, this will never get old. Just bought the A10C mod for standalone DCS today, this is invaluable !! Thanks Bud from a wee Scottish Island :)
ive just watched a few of your other videos, and they really are very very good - exactly what i need in trying to learn this daunting and amazing software. Very well presented by Reddick - Clearly presented, easy to follow and believable. I know i will be watching them quite a lot over the next few months! Great stuff
thanks for this video. it really helped remind me why I haven't reinstalled this simulator. Anyone who can even remember the steps to start it let alone fly and even more TEACH a lesson on this I definately tip my hat to you.
Recently bought this game and its amazing. thing is, as im learning (lots to learn) i cant do that much per day because my head keeps exploding! glad for the help on youtube though :)
Hopefully this isn't an inappropriate question for this channel, but..... I have A-10c, have flown the quick missions in Game mode to at least get a feel for the flight characteristics, but find it's extremely difficult to gain and maintain airspeed, and climbing is a "fuhgedda bout it"..... also trimming Logitech Extreme 3D Pro stick using Ctrl-T to clear it, then "T" as I get reasonable stability in flight direction and banking. It seems like it just throws out the trim, so I'm spending most time getting stable flight. EXCELLENT video quality and explanations, thanks
Two things kinda bothered me: -at engine startup you didn't have your radios on to contact tower even if you had wanted to. -before starting up your engines you forgot to put your ejector seat to standby other than that, good stuff. :)
i can imagine that every pilot 's first time in this cockpit is scary as hell !!! eventually getting to know this as the inside of your pocket ...man thumbs up for those folks doing this for a living... this is serious shit :)
Yup! We have quite a few guys who like to DCS around here, including myself. Unfortunately, I broke my stick not long after this video, so I haven't been able to fly in a while, and have been wondering if it's worth it to buy a new one. However, if you do get on the TS, find a user named "Slade," that's me, and I can get you all setup. :)
Should the master electrical bus switch at top right on right side panel really be showing yellow and black diagonal warning stripes? Surely that indicates it is "off"?
Very good tutorial Sr. The best on the net in my opinion! I´m from Brazil and would like to join you guys, if you have the patience to teach me some flight lessons. I´m a fresh in to flight´s, but i love it from my soul! Best regard´s, Leandro Pires
BTW... read the posts made on the ED forums by Paul.... as a veteran myself, and airline pilot I guess I won't be joining his squadron.. ever :) I'll need to hop on your TS server soon and see if I can get some training in. Looking to fly with a good group of guys.
Everything went perfectly, and thanks for such a great tutorial. I have one question though. When I finished the startup, my nose wheel steering was not on, and couldn't get it on. Is their a button in the cockpit to click, or on the keypad?
I know this video was posted over 2 years ago, but how do you get all your waypoints? What is the source of all your waypoint info for navigation, or is it already loaded into the CDU when you load a mission? Other then that, I'm pretty much sold for the A-10C, will be downloading soon!
I'm struggling with this game and have for several years. I've never been able to get the throttles to move in the start up training. When instructed, I've hit the RALT Home to start the left engine and the throttle doesn't move. The same problem exists with the RCTL Home. I did some reading and some people said to use the RALT and RCTL End to make sure throttle is off, then try moving it with the previously mentioned key to start it. Still no joy. If you have suggestions other than to RTFM, I would appreciate it. I've read and watched everything I can to get through this issue. Thanks
100% what Dr. Warthog ordered. 2 weeks into DCS, and despite several modules to choose from, I am sticking with the Hog. Which totally makes the learning curve go vertical. It doesn't matter, I want to get this aircraft down. Aaaaaand.... I saw you were in the Walla Walla area flying around, I live in Germany now, but spent many years in Walla Walla. My boys were born in Walla Walla. So as if your tutorial wasnt bad ass enough... there comes a personal attachment to it, because of your geographic location and my history too. So I am so curious, I have so many questions, and the only thing I know about digital themepark, is that we dial it up on joint FS to fly with each other in msfs 2020, but other than that... I am clueless. Do you guys have a discord? I would LOVE to actually shoot the breeze and a couple of tanks with you dude. Greets from Würzburg Germany man.
Is there a cockpit switch to start the engines? Only following your sequence works up to the point of pressing the right-ALT + HOME or right-CTRL + HOME where nothing happens.
If you have a joystick with throttle control, put it to zero, then try alt+home and ctrl+home. If you don't have a joystick with throttle, hit PgDn a couple of times. If even after that, you can't start your engines, set up some keyboard button to decrease throttle in the options and hit it a couple of times before start up. The thing is: you need to have zero throttle when starting up the plane. :)
Thanks for a great video. I watched as a complete novice from the point of understanding what a A10 pilot has to do to get one of these into the air. I just have one question. If the Russians or Chinese were inbound to destroy these aircraft sitting on the ground how quickly could you get one into the air from a minimal emergency start basis ?
Pretty quickly. If your only goal is to fly them away as fast as possible, you don't have to wait for the INS to align, you switch on the battery, the inverter, the fuel pumps, APU, the APU gen, then engines, engine gens, radios, turn off the APU+GEN, arm ejection seat and close the canopy and turn of IFFCC and CICU,. This is obviously not a proper procedure, but if you really wanna get up in the air asap this should do. Now obviously, you won't have oxygen, so stay below 10k feet, you'll have to align the INS in the air, turn on the autopilot, SAS, lights, etc in the air but if it really is an emergency, the plane should be flyable in a couple of minutes. It really depends on the engine startup time, which I believe may be a little bit different in the game compared to real life for opsec reasons.
Great video just started playing DCS after years of FSX AND VRS F18E. Which I hope most people will be moving over to because Microsoft has no more interest in FSX. and x plane sux. Love blowing shit up was going to wait for DCS F18 because I have flown many hours in them but couldn't wait anymore. The start up is def soviet error with some updates. I want to Buy a HOTAS stick but don't have $500 for the Thrustmaster so am waiting for the Saitek X55 , To see the reviews but will prob end up preordering it because its price is in my range and it has what I need and I think but I'm not sure how much better it is then the x52 pro. I'll wait a little longer when there's some real reviews. But good video thanks.
Great video. I recently bought this on steam sale and depending on how I get on with it am considering a warthog stick and 3 screen setup. Does this have Oculus Rift support, and if so is it worth using with it? I have a DK2 on the way.
When ever I start up, After I hit the battery power and then the inverter switch, I get the master caution light. Why does it do this, is there not enough power in the cockpit? Do I need to wait before hitting the inverter?
I'm real new to this. But how did he turn the specific buttons on/off. Is he using keyboard? Cause I've seen some videos where they are able to use the mouse cursor to select buttons amd switches.
Do you use keybinds, or aftermarket panels for various things? I didn't see you click on anything with the mouse, like on the UFC, the select rocker, or the clock either of the buttons. is this just a bug where I can't see the cursor? or are you using a touch screen?
Hello, Question, I just purchased the warthog hotas. You say that DCS already has a setup for this hotas. Where can I get a copy. I only been setting the basic on my old saitek x52. I wonder if you can make a noob video on must have setting for fix wings fighter aircraft or recommend someone on you tube who good at DCS hotas setting. Thanks, I want to get serious and do this right.
***** ah ok, thank you for the quick response. I was afraid that if you leave the APU on together with the engines running, that it would cause electric failures of some kind over time.
Miro H It wouldn't cause electrical failures but will burn more fuel than if you have it off but as we are in a combat sim not a commercial flight sim that doesn't really matter too much.,
Recall also that the APU runs on jet fuel....therefore to run it with no need for bleed air once the engines, gens and ins running, it would be meaningless to keep the APU on....it would create potentially undesirable in-flight aerodynamic flows near the inlet for the APU (usually somewhere on the empennage) and be a drain on fuel.
This might seem like strange question -- but this guy's voice sounds nearly identical to one I heard when watching "Restrepo", a documentary about an Outpost in the Korengal Valley setup by US forces. One of the soldiers featured in the documentary sounds just like the voice in this tutorial. Any chance it's the same guy? If not, they must be from the same region/area of the US!
Here's what I wonder, in real life how long would it take an experienced pilot to do all these steps? Because we spent at least 40 minutes to be ready to taxi to the runway...
I'm pretty sure if the pilots skilled enough and did the different stages in a specific order it can be cut down to under 15 mins I'm pretty sure it requires skipping some less important steps / checks.
Lvl89wrlk Yes. Like some of the weapons systems, you can do in-flight versus on the ground. I talked to a buddy of mine recently who worked on the A-10C weapons crew, and he said that the DCS start-up sequence is completely identical to the real A-10C Warthog aircraft.
Jose Picot In this video I think the guy was doing a compete start up of everything such as weapons, navigation, and all that fun time consuming stuff. In-game, a basic start up can take close to 6 or 7 minutes.
But who doesn't want to sit on the ramp for a extra few and listen to them engines idle...Mmm so sexxxy i think my neighbors think i'm dating a warthog...oops.
this seems pretty complex. why do i get the feeling, that Russians just start their planes by hitting the control panel with a rock, till it starts going?
***** I'm no pilot but it seems like the components he is turning on are quite basic and not really "advanced" (so to speak), eventhough there are many of them. Power Unit, battery, radio reciever, IFF, APU, activate HUD, load NAV data... It's a lot for a non-pilot to remember. I've played the game for over a year and I haven't really nailed everything yet!
I keep getting a cdu input error. idk what i did wrong. If i fix it so i dont get a cdu input error i the cant select egi instead of hars on the front panel...
I am new to this game. Is there any kind of a checklist that can be downloaded to go by to do this until I get it memorized? If so where can I find it?
Absolutely fantastic tutorial. No useless chit-chat, the little color highlights over the relevant gauges was a fantastic touch. Please continue making videos like this.
I have literally no doubt the guy narrating this is an actual A10 pilot.
gee I hope so, after all he's teaching, that would seem logical, wouldn't it?
Ummm did you check all twitter.com/Jett your sources???
Many of the terms he uses a pilot would not say. Other than a few mistakes this is routine engine run steps except you have to know more precautions and all the limits of APU and engines, along with emergency shutdown procedures.

I'm an airline pilot just now getting into DCS A-10C. Great training video guys, solid effort.
If my bank account would allow me, I would stay home and truly learn to fly like you guys, but unfortunately as a truck driver with his company, time does not allow, but if it did, I would want to be the second wing man to you guys. The fun you guys are having right now.

Omg you are the only one I have seen do the lights test and fire test correct! I.e. before engines start!
you are doing a great job here, thank you
Thanks, bud!
This is a very nicely done video that really gives a sense of the level of training and expertise that our warfighters need. Very impressive.
This vid alone prompted me to go out, buy a flight stick, buy the A10 DLC, and start taking notes like i was in class. Why haven't i played flight sims before? Man i cant wait til im running combat missions.
Wow! Informative and intuitive.......excellent video, I could watch it over and over.
The proper startup in this video is wrong. Every startup goes in this order: APU, Engines, then Navigation.

1) as mentioned before, arm your ejection seat (you should have check your caution lights panel and then you would have noticed this)
2) IIRC flaps should be set to Movement when taking off, although I'm not sure?

4) Turn on Pilot heating ;)
All in all nice detailed video, same goes for the other training vids. Love em, great work!
this guy is the best! a few other videos of the A10c Warthog that are just silly. this guy knows his stuff! thanks for this great video. helped alot.
+rob missale Really happy to hear it was so helpful, and glad we were able to provide something better for your needs! :)
+JetlinerX hey man, im new to this sim and i was just wondering what set up you use to control your view in this video because its really smooth, the best ive seen so far. thanks
+noel curtis It looks like he's using TrackIR.
Trackir 5 with the pro clip.
Best what is on UA-cam so far. Thanks JetlinerX
Everything is really clear and easy to understand. I hope you will make more tutorials like these. Thank you for your knowledge.
Good stuff my friend, this will never get old. Just bought the A10C mod for standalone DCS today, this is invaluable !! Thanks Bud from a wee Scottish Island :)
Your tutorials are awesome man, thank you for sharing this knowledge.

thanks for this video. it really helped remind me why I haven't reinstalled this simulator. Anyone who can even remember the steps to start it let alone fly and even more TEACH a lesson on this I definately tip my hat to you.
These sims are SO realistic.
Thx for the briefing!
+KutWrite A realistic simulation... who would have thought?
surely not!
Great video. In depth and explained well. I feel like I could get one of these running.
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment, and telling us that. Means a lot to us.
Recently bought this game and its amazing. thing is, as im learning (lots to learn) i cant do that much per day because my head keeps exploding! glad for the help on youtube though :)
very good SLOWLY explained,so i could follow you
Hopefully this isn't an inappropriate question for this channel, but..... EXCELLENT video quality and explanations, thanks
BRILLIANT presentation.. Thank you for taking the time to make this excellent tutorial... (subscribed) and looking for more now...
JetlinerX, the instructor is really good ... easily the best I've seen on this subject ... can you convince him to do some more tutorials?
Thanks m8. Went to my local air force base and...well...
+ByteMe didnt have any A10Cs to steal did they? yeah neither did mine.. its all F16s and cargo planes..
mine still has A10Cs for now, martin state airport ANG maryland
ByteMe ask them politely. A "pretty please" goes a long way...
love the realism. this looks like an awesome game. \m/
Aqwesome tutorial! thanks! this helped me (newbie)
Great tuorial, all well explained.
Thank you am a nerd and need this info Great work...

Great, clear and easy to understand video. Thanks. Arm the ejection seat nextime though.
I bought the A10c yesterday and i dont understand shit about it yet. without this i probably wouldt get in the air!
Glad to hear I could help! :)
Fantastic video, thanks a lot, really helped me
Great tutorial, thank you!
TOP loud and clear ...
Coo. Imma apply fa dat BRRRRRRTTTT position in da air force. Pretty sho i be gettin' it afta watchin dis.
Do you think you can pass the intelligence test?
beste Tutorial!
great tutorial :)

what if you want to start the engine without Left Alt + Home thing and use actual switches or buttons, how do you do that?
Great video. I recently bought this on steam sale and depending on how I get on with it am considering a warthog stick and 3 screen setup. Does this have Oculus Rift support, and if so is it worth using with it? I have a DK2 on the way.
When ever I start up, After I hit the battery power and then the inverter switch, I get the master caution light.
Why does it do this, is there not enough power in the cockpit? Do I need to wait before hitting the inverter?
Look on your dummy panel to see what is flashing, or lit up. That would be the first thing to check in case of a problem.
***** Hi, when I just hit battery power I get oil pressure warnings on both engines. I also get CCIP INVALID on the HUD. Help?
I'm real new to this. But how did he turn the specific buttons on/off. Is he using keyboard? Cause I've seen some videos where they are able to use the mouse cursor to select buttons amd switches.
Yes, just use the mouse.
Do you use keybinds, or aftermarket panels for various things? I didn't see you click on anything with the mouse, like on the UFC, the select rocker, or the clock either of the buttons. is this just a bug where I can't see the cursor? or are you using a touch screen?
Is there a checklist made for this start up method?
you never turned the apu off.
James Vaughan is that after both engines are on? When to turn it off?
After the first you can cross bleed air into the second.

how many times have i done a whole mission with the apu still running haha
As I understand it, the APU is only switched off after takeoff, in case an engine is lost and avionics stop working
Thanks, I want to get serious and do this right.
thanks
For someone that would like to fly this bad boy what are system requirements and can my cousin join up from the other side of the country too?
love your vids but i have a question. its been asked before but not answered. Do we need to turn of the APU or can we leave it on without any harm?
You CAN, we dont suggest it. Once the engines are running, they will provide all the power you need.
*****
ah ok, thank you for the quick response.
Thank you!
Is there a checklist i can look off of
I don't get a map on the left MFCD. It is just a black background with the same info on the screen as yours. Please help
Do you have TAD selected?
Keowar don't know what that is, still learning. It works now. :)
is it necessary to play this sim on steam or is it better to download from the website..
great video thanks..
thanks for that info...ill definately check the vids!!
I felt like I went back to flight school! Thanks!
PS I assume you have to call the Tower or Ground Control before taxiing?
+KutWrite Yes
where is the file u reffered...from where u learnt abt all the switches ????
that dude could fly a real A-10C
He may have... ;)
We forgot. Phh, who needs it anyway! ;) You should arm it just before the plane is about to start taxing just in case you need to get out during taxi.
The APU was not shut down ! is that normal?
Never activated the ejection seat??
Not able to view the video, is it available anywhere else? Thanks
Nice detail in this video! Well done mate just quickly is the teamspeak option still available? :p
Yup! ts3.digitalthemepark.com
How i ask the tower for clearance for takeoff
When i set the button behind the stick to egi, it doesnt light up, im pretty sure i followed every step up to that point
Need this depth of realism in the F-15C or better yet the F-16C.
Try DCS F15, and BMS Falcon. :)
40mins?...i watched this at least 5 times to get everything down like a science
Jose Picot In this video I think the guy was doing a compete start up of everything such as weapons, navigation, and all that fun time consuming stuff. In-game, a basic start up can take close to 6 or 7 minutes.
But who doesn't want to sit on the ramp for a extra few and listen to them engines idle...Mmm so sexxxy i think my neighbors think i'm dating a warthog...oops.
Are you excited for the oculus rift?
this seems pretty complex. why do i get the feeling, that Russians just start their planes by hitting the control panel with a rock, till it starts going?
*****
I'm no pilot but it seems like the components he is turning on are quite basic and not really "advanced" (so to speak), eventhough there are many of them. Power Unit, battery, radio reciever, IFF, APU, activate HUD, load NAV data...
It's a lot for a non-pilot to remember. I've played the game for over a year and I haven't really nailed everything yet!
+178thbattlegroup Sorry, but you are wrong. Check videos of DCS:MiG-21 startup :)
I prefer the proper startup followed by checklist. Just do it like IRL to achive the simulator level. :D
Im glad you starter left engine first... most people start their right first and thats a big no on a real A10
very helpful explained a lot that is left out on DCS training. Can you put a down load link to the text of this instructions?? :)
Will this run on my pc? FX6300, gtx 770, 500gb ssd, 2tb hdd, Gigabyte 990FXA mobo, 700W psu
Dude, the minimum is a GTX 570 and a first-gen i5.
I have a 970 and an fx 8350 now
I keep getting a cdu input error. idk what i did wrong. If i fix it so i dont get a cdu input error i the cant select egi instead of hars on the front panel...
ok so now i just have nav and eac dummy lights on and i am stuck....
sbryans123
ok so i may be starting to get it.
I am new to this game. Is there any kind of a checklist that can be downloaded to go by to do this until I get it memorized? If so where can I find it?
The checklist is part in the official manual (pdf).
Here is a good checklist: www.476vfightergroup.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=29 ... hope YT allows the link
