In the middle of Macedonia Square is the magnificent Statue of Alexander the Great. The structure, also known as Fatih Sultan Mehmed Bridge, is 214 meters long and 6 meters wide. Today, only pedestrians are allowed to cross the bridge that provides transportation between Macedonia Square and the Turkish Bazaar. Skopje Castle, one of the symbols on the city's coat of arms and flag, is thought to have been first built by the Romans in the 5th or 6th century. Located on a hill a few steps away from the Turkish Bazaar, north of the Vardar River, the castle has been severely damaged many times as a result of earthquakes. The castle, which was used by the Ottoman Empire after the Roman and Byzantine periods, continues to exist in ruins today, but it manages to attract the attention of travelers due to its view. Mother Teresa Memorial House, close to Macedonia Square, was opened to visitors in 2009 in memory of the saint who lived in Skopje between 1910 and 1928. The lower part of the memorial house has been turned into a museum. The upper floor serves as a Catholic church. The Archaeological Museum, which you can reach by passing through the Bridge of Civilizations, decorated with statues depicting important people from the country's history, started operating in 2014. The museum is the right address to understand the richness of Macedonian history. On the other two floors, there are vessels, bowls and sculptures used or produced in different periods. Mustafa Pasha Mosque, located just below the Skopje Castle, was built in 1492. The first renovation works in the historical building, which suffered from the devastating effects of the 1963 earthquake, were completed in 1968. The more comprehensive project for its original restoration was carried out between 2006 and 2011 as a result of the cooperation of TIKA and the Macedonian government. Next to the mosque, which is open for worship, there is a tomb where Mustafa Pasha's sarcophagus is preserved. The construction of the Davut Pasha Bath, a few steps away from the Stone Bridge, was carried out between 1489 and 1497. The historical building, which was built in line with the request of Grand Vizier Davut Pasha, is one of the two baths in the city that has managed to preserve its existence until today, together with İsa Bey. The building is also known as Çifte Hamam because it has a single entrance door and there are two separate areas for men and women inside. The exterior of the bath, which was renovated by TIKA in 2013, and the ceiling and dome passages in the interior continue to maintain the same characteristics as when they were first built.
