The Lord’s Prayer in Swedish is my favorite part of the song, especially at the end when they add the marching and the fade-out

'White in their eyes' - they would get so close to the other army that they'd be able to see the white in their enemies' eyes. They were very well paid and trained to move forward regardless of circumstances, which was quite unique back then, but of course - this needed amazing morale/training. Remember though that they were Protestants, so they believed in predestination... as a result, it didn't matter if you fell or not - everything was predetermined, including faith. That's why they were very efficient. Certainly helps with morale and keeping everything in check. (Swedish part - the Lord's Prayer)

The caroleans actually thought that everybody's faith already was decided by God and that he protect you until your time has come, so that's why they so fearlessly marched on because if God decided that it was their time it was nothing the human should interfere with.

It's a song about the marching and preparing for battle. Makes sense that it is not a dynamic song, more of an instruction mixed with a prayer. And only Sabaton can make the Lord's Prayer sound very metal. I'm not religious but I just have to sing along with the prayer part .

You should watch their sabaton history channel where they go in depth about the history and a little about the song itself

Definitely recommend reading a bit about the caroleans. At the time they were regarded as some of the most feared/respected troops in europe due to their almost fanatical religious beliefs and discipline, really interesting stuff!

"The Caroleans" was the popular name of the Swedish army during the reign of Carl XI and Carl XII.

No Caroleans were a specific part of the Swedish armies and a minority one at that. Smh 🤦‍♂️

It was simply the name of the soldiers serving under king Karl XI and XII, Caroleans is Karoliner in Swedish.
Basically sweds never use C but K in the beginning of words.
There is a great book about them by Göte Göransson. Named "Karoliner. " But I have no clue if it ever got translated.
At least 8 of my ancestors was soldiers during that time. 2 died in the storming of Lemberg in 1703(?) now Lviv and others in Poltava 1709.

The "White in their eyes", is a reference to a part of the assault tactics of "Gå på" which the caroleans were trained in. Because the muskets in the late 17th century were so inaccurate, in order to get an effective volley at the enemy line you had to get close. The swedish soldiers and officers were pretty much the best of their day but they were few and usually severely outnumbered, thus getting bogged down in a gun fight were a recipe for disaster. Instead they would march straight towards the enemy line and take the ineffective volleys from the enemy from a distance. Stopping around 25-30 paces from the enemy. Firing with the first line. The second line stepping forward, firing and meanwhile the first to fire drew swords and would charge from out of the smoke from the two volleys from a close range. That would usually be enough to break the enemy

Their tactics were efficient in the short term, but likely a main contributor to their downfall, long term. The very high highly drilled and disciplined troops were somewhat able to go on, when other troops would already start retreating or breaking from losses incurred. The relentless and swift going forward hindered the enemies regrouping easily after and thus helped the caroleans gain victories.
But en route to those victories, they incurred arguably unneccessarily heavy losses. So whereas their enemies broke and ran, lost a battle but survived to fight another day, the Caroleans won the battles but lost valuable and hard to replace men.
Somewhat a phyrric victory, really. And given the size difference and numbers at play, Sweden would ultimately run dry.
It also arguably helped sweden, that the russians early on were not exactly the best soldiers of europe.

    • @oddjonsson2815
      @oddjonsson2815 Рік тому

@@lutzderlurch7877 the thinking was that losses were inevitable and that the shock tactics would incur fewer losses then the line volley fire tactics which were becoming the norm and would stay in place until basicly the mid 1800s. You say that it helped that the Russian soldiery usually were rather poor. That was exactly why this doctrine was configured. Most of the nations that Sweden were adversaries to used old levy systems with poorly motivated and trained conscripts. They could afford to do so due to their larger national manpower pool where as Sweden couldn't. The carolean army was amazing when able to be used the way it was configured too but it couldn't fight long protracted wars. Sweden simply didn't have the resources and men to manage that. Which is why the Swedish empire had to come to an end eventually.

I think keeping the song rather similarly structured throughout and also the long fadeout (but with fading in marching sounds) is kinda the point. It does hint at the mantra like repetition of prayers, either a loud or silently in the head, of highly religious soldiers, as they march towards battle

I think there was exactly 1 king in Sweden that managed to live the "divine right" ideals because Swedish kings always had much harder times wrestling with nobles due to geography of realm and smaller population compared to central and western Europe.
