Will Starmer sack Reeves or will she survive as Chancellor?

- As the clock ticks down to next week’s critical Spending Review, Chancellor Rachel Reeves is hitting the road, announcing infrastructure investments and focusing attention on Reform-leaning areas. Is this a last ditch effort to steady the ship?

In this episode of The Fourcast, we're asking: Has Labour already lost control, just months into government? And can Keir Starmer turn things around?
Joining Matt Frei in the studio is Anushka Asthana, wrapping up two decades at Westminster and releasing a new edition of her insider book Taken as Red. She offers a behind-the-scenes look at how Starmer’s Labour rose - and where it may be faltering.
Also joining us is political commentator Andrew Rawnsley, who was there for the early days of the Blair-Brown era. Can any government succeed in today’s economic climate, or are the comparisons simply unfair?

What about the raid on pensions by Reeves. This government needs to F off, and please take channel 4 with you.
Yeh i notice this is oddly absent in the media. I did read a BBC article on it where they tried to spin it as a great idea! Scary stuff.
They are both appalling.
They are not that good.
Starmer needs to go along with her
Please Please let it be soon
Sacking himself should be first
😂😂😂😂
All need to go totally useless
The massive hikes on business taxes has had the inevitable result - less growth, less tax, less jobs. If you want less of something tax it more.
He will sing like a canary at the Hague.
This Labour govt will ensure it is the last for some time.
The story is we have a government run by people who almost all who left school, went to university to study law or politics, then went into politics as a junior advisor, then got elected as an MP. The missings from the story is no experience of business or real work experience.
Starmer spent most of his career as a lawyer and got into politics quite late. Reeves was an economist for the Bank of England and then Halifax I believe. So that's not true for either of them.
@@markianrossstarmer and labour our no politician that a fact reform uk will be next government labour made sure of that
@@markianross1) she wasn’t an economist at either institution as she had now admitted and 2) the Bank of England is a public sector employer, not private. She lasted a few years at Halifax in customer complaints before getting asked to leave following dodgy expense claims,. All of the above is s matter of public record + has been widely reported. You must be so blindly ideological you cannot assess objective fact as real
Sack Reeves for what? He's 10,000 x worse
labour arent banning zero hour contracts
Reeves wanted to cut WFA in 2014.
Anushka Asthana clearly has enough material for an interesting book! Her insights are based on first hand experiences. I would've liked to hear more from her.
We all know he will not sack Reeves he's to afraid
Or Lamey: they are both so staggeringly useless and stupid, they make even Starmer seem almost average. Which is the reason they are there. Was the same story with the Cabinets of hapless mediocrities appointed by May and Johson.
proper journalism. Thanks C4.
Not surprised the conversation deviated towards electoral reform. We have a failing two-party first-past-the-post system with sclerotic parties in a sociopolitical landscape that is absolutely starving for difficult political options and a different way of having their country run. Labour needs to understand that this is not just an existential moment in history for the Conservative party, but beyond that, it will also be for them. How do they meet that challenge - they need to grasp the nettle, and become the party that helps introduce and choose the form of PR used, become the party that acknowledges the people's despair with the democracy we have, and sets its sights on the more realistic and stable future prospect of progressive coalitions with the Lib Dems or the Greens.
Vote Reform.
@@ennbee2051that what the vast majority have been doing but Labour conservatives like to cancel elections they both need to go reform uk will be the new government plain and simple
The MP's should sack Starmer
They should but they wont. he has protection from above, and they all have something on each other.

15billion quid for regional transport, rescuing political goodwill for failing privatised bus services.
Cruelly reducing the welfare bill for the most in need, a Labour Government decision to destroy itself nationally.
I would rather investment in job creating infrastructure than blanket benefits for millionaire pensioners
The vast majority of pensioners arent millionaires
@@OnlineEnglish-wl5rpdidn’t say they were
Starmer full of it lies deceit and untrustworthy he do not have it in him to sack her it a hard decision
he should sack her then resign and let a REAL labour MP takeover
Don’t underestimate Starmer. He’s a student of Niccolo Machiavelli and probably keeps a copy of “ The Prince “ at his bedside.
If only.
The entire point of The Prince is how to be an attractive politician, in terms of controlling disparate territories and knowing how to ‘influence’ the governed, keeping them in check.
If anything, it’s a compliment if one knows how to act this way, as it reveals political prudence.
I’m not sure if people still bother to read Machiavelli nor the significance of ‘fortuna’ in his writings,-Machiavelli was a deeply introspective figure, and I think he’s sadly been reduced to sound bites.
Now I’ve no clue how you can tarry Starmer’s politics with that, considering that surely it’s the complete opposite, no? He had no clue how to helm a clear perspective of what he actually stands for.
I would slightly challenge the idea we completely know what Farage stands for. Do we? We think we know, but do we?
Do you know what any political party stands for, they all lie, why single him out?
When Quere Starmers says 'Rachel has my full confidence' she will be gone within days.
STARMER IS A TRAITOR AND SO IS RAKKEL RAVES. AND YES, SO ARE ALL OF THE TORIES. HATRED IS TOO NICE A DESCRIPTION OF HOW WE FEEL ABOUT THEM.
Tax where the money has gone over the last 30 years. It's not difficult
To lead us (to anything good) the PM needs a complex political understanding. Keir Starmer simply does not have a detailed schema and plan.
The UK’s annual income from the UKs service industries is not sufficient to pay for its annual debt obligations, including the cost of goods imports and interest on external debts. Budgets can't correct this, we need to export more and import less. All UK parties wish to reject or hide from this fact.
How many illegal immigrants will it take to take Starmer down?
He's so out of touch. All of them
Reform are the future
The simple truth is the government needs to raise more revenue to pay for our new defence commitments, and to repair and rebuild the damage done to public services done by the Conservatives over fourteen years! People have to come to terms with the truth the government needs more money. The Conservatives more than doubled our national debt and ran deficit spending budgets for years. This ‘American’ idea that you can govern by borrowing is ridiculous. We will have to raise taxes and pay down the public debt.
Stop the benefits
There are not enough working people in the UK left to subsidise the worlds' immigrants. Labour has never understood the link between housing shortages, waiting lists and lack of tax contributions by so-called asylum seekers.
They understand very well
But lots of these people want to work in the black economy. That's the issue and the Establishment knows it very well. They coukd crack down on all these dodgy workplaces but won't
Can someone stop Matt Frei from talking over his guests. This isn’t a hostile interview it’s a podcast. You want to avoid all this crosstalk. Let them complete the thought then edit later for time if needed. Enough of the shouting over each other!
Starmer won't sack Reeves because she's his human shield.
Indeed why sack your shield who takes all the bullets
she aint human bud.
@@Glasgow_kiss Haha yes thank you for correcting me: She's his robot shield 😂
This platform to me is a complete joke in its comments which could only be made by either, the Conservative Party or Reform. The entitled ones have been put onto the naughty step for 5 years.
No , it's not her fault the party tied their own hands on tax policy that forced such reckless and dire choices on employers NI .
Keith will not sack Rach as he has no clue what is going on in the real world.
He should have just put a cap on the fuel payment. Anyone under Twenty thousand gets it. They now have more people on universal credit. Who can now claim for a lot more. So government lost out.
why didn't they just add the winter fuel allowance to the state pension, so it was taxable, then at least the poorest get it and the richest get 55% of it, obviously with the correct messaging!
He has to deliver on policy and reeves plan would do this!
Either that or Reeves has to take over!!
Reeves doesn't seem to understand how the economy works.
The 'National Debt' is only a debt in the same way that HSBC is in 'debt' to me because I've got £20 in my HSBC account. It's really more accurately described as a National Savings Account.
About 1/3rd of the 'debt' is just money that the government owes to itself - and Reeves is pretty much in control of the interest rate paid on the 'debt'.
The fact that she is using the 'National Debt' as an excuse for every bad idea she has is an indication that she hasn't got a clue what shes doing.
Starmer needs his group of liars. He wont sack Reeves.
He would replace Reeves with Darren Jones. No question
Or better still, Liam Byrne who has just as good an understanding of economics, but a far better political antenna
They have borrowed to the hilt. And have been spending a lot, flying around with our tax money. The budget is putting more out of work. And the rich leaving. While we are paying for the people coming on boats.
Close the tax avoidance loopholes & pay the fuel allowance
For Starmer to survive, he must dismiss Reaves.
He won’t get sack her if he does it will weaken him , but if it threatens his beloved number ten he will push anyone of his MPs under the bus 🚌
This woman needs to stop speaking over people
This is a badly executed discussion. How many times three of them talk over one another at the same time? Why not stick to the issue of the title? Disappointing.
All the funding paid to 'outside' countries need to be reduced to keep the funding for the UK.
Immigration costs must also stop. So Labour would have sufficient taxpayers' funds to put back into our economy.
Public spending is funded by printing bonds not taxation
@@OnlineEnglish-wl5rp it gives me hope that there are at least some people who understand this. If only some of them worked for the government.
They can't fix an economy that they don't understand.

It's more likely she will replace him.
No, Yvette Cooper will stand in as temporary leader.
Rupert would have rock star status as PM, he should take over as leader of the Tories if they really want to beat Reform.
Not this, vision
Reeves and Starmer. Who is their natural constituency? Long-serving public sector retirees with massive pensions maybe. Charity sector executives maybe. People who live in zones 2 and 3 in London maybe. Beyond that I don’t think they represent anyone in this country
Disposable income will be a thing of the past soon. Go visit it in the museum.
Red socks?!?
She is Noel Fielding's doppelganger
She hasn’t got a clue what she is doing She got the job under false pretences not being qualified as an economist
But u tube in my opinion are good at spinning yarns
Sack Reeves? And appoint who? Darren Jones? Surely, Labour played their A team in the first place with a chancellor who actually studied economics at uni, as opposed to Jones, who did ‘human bioscience’ whatever that is. The writing is on the wall for this bunch of disingenuous, underwhelming, tone deaf no hopers. And that writing just better be in small words so people like Rayner can understand them. Reform will win the next election. Last summer, people didn't vote FOR Labour; without a sufficiently viable alternative at the time, they simply voted AGAINST the Tory horrorshow. But by the next election, there will be a serious alternative to the disappointment of Starmer's forked tongue or the Tory's revamped dusty tedium. And at the present rate of Labour's cruel, myopic, unimaginative policies, actions and flaccid inactions, Labour will have provided the public with an accurate CV (what a novelty for Labour) of their inadequacy, about which the public will be able to make an informed decision.
insighful
Eerrrrm… Starmer hasn’t sacked anyone…. 😂
Someone needs to ask labour the question: where’s the logic in funding a lost war. They’d be better off spending a million on specialist negotiators and bring an end to the slaughter in Ukraine. The end of that war would see the stock markets boom. Settle the Middle East and the price of energy will drop and we then have stable economies and investment is more available but what do I know?

There is no need to talk down the Tories, (who are doing a good job of self destruction as is) but there is every need to challenge and confront the simplistic and appealing message of the Right and Far Right whom are pinning their fortunes to identity politics. There is after all, a significant portion of the UK population who would willingly support and aid a Trump style Regime in power over here in the United Kingdom.
