      Spiggle I’m not saying I know for a fact since it’s not out yet. It is it possible that because these GPU dies are connected through infinity fabric, that microstutter could cease to exist? Just like how ryzen cores can communicate with very low latency. I think it’s possible. Also if dx12 would perform as advertised and you could have 1 GPU render one side of the monitor and the other rendered by GPU #2, that could also alleviate the microstutter issue.

      @@dylanneff8338 Ray tracing could be an answer for this because it's so easy to parallelise. If a game is completely ray traced then two GPUs would be twice as fast as one, four would be twice as fast again, and so on. Once we move past rasterisation and onto full ray tracing, we'll have chiplet GPUs on infinity fabric for sure.

    Let me help clairify the PCIe 4.0 conundrum. PCIe 4.0 uses a different trace size and spacing for signal integrity and the older AM4 boards may or may not be able to handle the signal degradation issue PCIe 4.0 presents. A higher quality board is not the issue but how the board was manufactured may allow PCIe 4.0 to function. If I'm not mistaken the newer boards will have wider traces and the spacing is further apart. The wider traces (I believe) is for power dissipation and the trace spacing reduces signal interference between traces or cross talk as it is commonly known. Edit: One thing I forgot to mention is the length of the traces. Due to the higher frequencies the length of the PCIe 4.0 traces is much shorter and this means the slots further away will be too far and signal degradation significant enough to not work. Even in some newer boards only the first slot closest to the CPU will be PCIe 4.0

    • @aland1618

      @@shawnpitman876 I think I miss stated that. In the older boards that would be true if they work at all. In the newer boards the re-routing of the traces may allow for PCIe 4.0 but I stand by the shorter traces part. I was recalling a video I watched explaining that.

High performance notebooks will have Comet Lake, entry level will be Ice Lake. The highest 10nm frequency Intel announced at Computex was ~4GHz, but they didn't even have working samples at that frequency with them, so nobody knows if or when they'll launch. 10nm is still shit-tier, they had to present 1,3GHz chips to the media.

    I can understand the PCIe 4 and x5XX boards only. I have a CH6H / 1800x combo, and I'm going to miss out on daisy-chain memory config if I stay with it and only upgrade to Zen 2. If it didn't use T instead of DC, there would likely be a BIOS hack to enable it.. and maybe there still will be.. but I want to up the memory speed too, and daisy chain is going to be required for exceeding the old limitations. Of course I am comparing 2 different generations of cards here, as the drivers improved exponentially during the Fury days compared to the 295x2. There are a couple UA-camrs who revisit the 295x2 in today's standards and it seems to have aged decently (like anything else AMD, seems to not be relevant at the time they should be.)
      But now single cards are performing way better than dual cards have, like the Vega 56 in my laptop does better than the dual Fury ever did, so thats a valid point too.
      Only way SLi and Crossfire will be worth a damn again, is if it became standard, but I doubt it, too much programming overhead. Plus I see a future of multiple dies on a GPU behaving as one single GPU, which I believe someone mentioned that this Vega II x2 in the Mac Pro will since the memory will be pooled into one instead of being separate due to the infinity fabric.

    • @peterjansen4826
      @peterjansen4826 5 років тому

      With regard to the latency, most people don't see the main contributing factor. Let's assume a perfect internet connection to that server, kind of. 5 ms of ping, 200 Mbps. That 5 ms added latency is not a dealbreaker to most gamers. Most gamers don't even mind V-sync, something which I can't even comprehend given that it makes a game unplayable to me. With VSync you easily get above 50 ms of input lag. The monitor and mouse also easily add 20 ms for many gamers.
      However, the big problem for any cloud gaming service like Stadia is this. If you want 4k gaming with only 8-bit color (which Google aims at), then you need 3840*2160*3*8 bits per frame, that 24883200 bytes = 24 MB per frame. Per second this is 60*24=1440 MB=1.44 GB. Google recommends 35 Mbps if I am not mistaken. They need an extremely agressive compression of 43 for this to work.
      In the case of 1080p every picture contains only 1/4th of the information so that would give a compression rate of 10.7
      Never mind that the picture quality deteriorates. A Blu-Ray movie also is compressed by a factor 10-20 so MAYBE a compression rate of 43 is doable? I am pretty certain that you will see it (I notice artefacts in Blu-Ray) but gamers might not care. I know that you can't fully multithread this compression perfectly given the dependencies between the different parts of the picture. You can use something similar to non-linear video editing, cut up the picture in parts and at the end compute how the parts fit together but it will not be 100% multithreaded. That means that you get additional input lag because of the compression. I don't know how much time Google needs to compress 24 MB per frame, it would be surprise me if they needs 5 ms or less for it but who knows. The more CPU cores Google throws at it the more expensive it gets and you have this dependency for pasting the parts of the picture together if you multithread it to avoid nasty looking 'cutlines'.
      For the demonstration with AC the input lag was 150 ms! That would probably be unplayable for us regular gamers (I can't even stand VSync with 50 ms, in ME2 and ME3 I had to disable that via a configuration file to make the game enjoyable). Maybe for console-gamers or non-gamers it is fine but I don't see many PC enthusiasts use Stadia for non-exclusive games or exclusive games which require a low input lag.

At least where I live, and I'm sure there's much worse out there, considering the fact that many of the connections are 230-290Mb sustained. No matter what it is though, You're not only doubling the ping time (Input, game responds, and sends it back over the network), but think about how mouse smoothing works, and now think about a constantly variable analog thumb stick on a controller. We're not just talking about a latency you would see locally with the machine tracking your inputs with a decent sampling rate, and then there is something like a frame buffer or screen latency, but a system that has to either do some sort of averaging, or predictive control. I'm not sure how they're tackling it, but the ways I can think of to combat it, just add more latency. The controls would be better, but more delayed. Some of the twitch games out there just would not be viable. No getting high scores in something like One Finger Death Punch. lol.
      Your point on the compression is absolutely taken. I can't imagine they will be throwing a lot of processing power at the compression, considering the requirements for the game itself. I would imagine they aren't using CPU's for that. They could just be using a hardware solution. similar to a capture card, or the encoder from AMD, but I don't know. They may have a custom solution. I haven't looked into it. I have tested a couple of different solutions on my LAN for streaming, with remote control as well, and even those were just terrible. Fine for non competitive RTS, but Unreal Tournament or CS:GO would be impossible. Those ping times at least were close to what you're talking about.
      Some games even V-sync will make it less enjoyable for me too. Not all games, but for some it matters more than others. I can't imagine the frame pacing is going to be that great either, which drives me even more crazy than a constant latency.

    Just as a heads up, according to Stadia's website, the FREE version will "come" with some games included (a roster of games never to be updated), while the PRO version will come with a constantly-updated library of FREE games, starting with The Division 2. More info here: stadia.com/ You will also be able to purchase newer (possibly AAA) titles for an extra fee, and you'll get to play them even if you cancel your PRO subscription.

    • @nate6908
      @nate6908 5 років тому +1

      If your motherboards slot is x8 or x16 but reduced to x8 because another slot is beeing used than you have to understand that half of the length on the slot is deactivated.
      Using a gpu gen3x16 in a x8 slot gives you the same bandwidth as if you were to cut "half" of the gpus x16 connector with a saw (it actually still works all the way down to x1)
      If you were to do that with a gen4x16 card then you would have a gen4x8 which has the same bandwidth as gen3x16

    • @nate6908
      @nate6908 5 років тому +1

      A gen3x16 gpu in a gen4x8 slot still means half of the gpus pcie pins won't have contact in the x8 slot even though it's gen4

You actually don't even need the controller as on a PC browser you will be able to use keyboard and mouse. Also the paid Pro subscription does give you access to free games "regularly" (whatever that means, probably monthly) similar to PlayStation Plus or Xbox Gold. This service should be interesting due to Google's infrastructure which is probably the most extensive network in the world. If anyone can do it it would be Google, but if they can't get it to work with all of there network it won't ever happen I think as the only networks capable of this level of traffic and that have this many local links are Google, Amazon, Microsoft (Azure), maybe Facebook, and a few of the Chinese Internet giants.

    Stadia or services like this might have their place, but with infrastructure not being that great in most of the world, it's hard to imagine it getting over that limitation without even getting into the topic of ISP restrictions and beyond that, latency. It might have a much better foothold in places like Japan or Korea where their distances are small and network excellent, but there's a lot of challenges. Beyond that, I can see it having a place as a companion for certain things, but nothing that requires any sort of latency sensitivity. If you've already used anything like Steam local streaming or PS4 to PSVita streaming, even with latencies sub 1ms, it still wasn't an optimal experience to be had. It's harder to imagine the internet ever overcoming that.
    There's also something to consider that as games move further into higher refresh rate gaming for the most superior and optimal gaming experience, internet streamed games are only going to feel that much worse even if they manage to overcome all those significant barriers. I think something like Stadia might be okay to try games out that you will then buy for any local hardware.
    I should also add this about Stadia, I don't like the idea of it. Maybe it's a traditionalist mindset, but having physical copies and physical rights to hardware and 'software' I suppose is always preferable. I'm okay with Steam and the like, but there's a lot of games that I can see being lost forever when they die.

    Stadia would be totally useless to me due to my connection in my apartment being limited at peak hours. Plus, why would one buy a subscription, and then have to buy games on top of that? The only game that comes with the service is going Free to Play on Steam anyhow, and it doesn't even seem like one that would put the service in it's best light. I don't see this service lasting past 5 years without some radical pricing changes and major advancements in latency issues, or it goes to more casual games.

    How many "lakes" can be left for Intel to name their stuff. Lava Lake, Potty Lake, Vapor Lake are bound to be used at some time in the near future.

      _@RaidrWolf maybe its to signify architectural similarities in the processors?_
      Could be. But doesn't that indicate they haven't changed much of anything since 2015 when Skylake was released and don't seem to be scheduled for anything really new for at least another year, provided that's of the same architecture as you say? If not, wouldn't it indicate that "Skylake" being one word instead of two indicate two different architectures with the word "lake" in it? Also, aren't they calling an arguably completely different architecture reported as "comet lake"? So, I don't think so. They just tack on the word "Lake" to whatever they do apparently. I think they are infatuated with the word "lake", for whatever reason that isn't readily clear.

    The latency seems like a massive drawback for stadia. I'll try it when the free version is available, but I doubt I'll play on it much beyond that

    Well, with Stadia, it might not be for or available to everyone, but it had a good chance to succeed. There has been ongoing talks in regards to how the next gen consoles will be priced due to the trade war with China. It just might be the affordable option that gamers (mostly casual or p/up & play) will flock to

    Stadia will be super weak. $10 a month just to buy games on top of that, with probably a bunch of latency, lag, and "system down" messages. I am good with my 2080ti.

    What's going to get people interested in Stadia is that it basically sounds like the Ouya but with a bigger name behind it. That's about it.

    I don't think Google stadia is designed for PC gamers, it's designed for people who can't afford expensive PC hardware. They would rather pay a low monthly fee instead of making a huge $600+ down payment for a new computer. There's definitely a market for it. I do kind of wish they went the Netflix route though with a library of you can play what you feel like and still have the free option but use the free option of the service as a you have to purchase the video games you want to use with it. Always give consumers good options and they will be happy

    It is lovely that DaVinci Resolve works with AMD on Apple, I wish that they would fix it for Linux too. The last hurdle for Linux. DaVinci Resolve is a lot better than Adobe Premiere, we Linux folks who use an AMD card want to be able to use it.

      DaVinci takes ages to render or just export as another format on Windows... I haven’t tried it on Linux, but I imagine it’s probably half the render times, although even that would be slow compared to most other render tools (goodness, Vegas Pro feels like a snail, but even it is faster). I may have to test out some new editing tools when I play around with Ubuntu Studio distro.

      I am not an expert in video-editing but as I understand it it has much more to do with the features than with the speed. With regard to speed and stability Adobe Premier Pro is a piece of trash, yet they keep using it because of all of those plugins. DaVinci Resolve is the nr. 1 editor in the movie-business. Yes, if you want it fast and it can be simple, then KDEnlive is fine.
