While I agree that XV's story needed expanding, I don't think these particular DLCs were what was needed in order to fix the story issues. They feel both like a retcon (Ardyn joining the good guys) and like a bad fanfic (an alternate storyline where the characters get to live!). The game would've benefited way more from DLC that addressed actual core issues of the game: letting us play in Insomnia as Noctis before the fall of the city, letting us play through the invasion of Insomnia (as Regis maybe), screentime used to develop Regis and Noctis' relationship, insight into Luna's character PRIOR to her death, expanding the open world that comes to an end halfway through the game, etc. Anyways, nice channel! Would love to chat more in case you have a Discord or anything like it.
Thanks for watching my content. DLC is indeed not always the path to go, but if it's done right it can be good. It's always very case by case basis in my own opinion.
I know it's been months since this post but I'm replying anyway:I have to agree that the DLC s the game got don't actually address the narrative problems with the game. There are fundamental narrative and worldbuilding elements either unexplained or straight up missing from FF15.And the problem is that lot of things they could've used to flesh it out, they decided to use supplementary material in the worst way they could:using it as a direct replacement because they couldn't be bothered to show it in the actual game. While the FF7 Complation series had it's issues,at the very least you didn't need all of the other supplementary stuff to understand the original FF7's story, because it was a complete one in itself.
This popped up in my suggestions and I got so ridiculously excited that we had received any kind of update on FFXV that I didn’t even think to look at the date the video was posted.
I personally was satisfied with how the actual game FF15 ended and that it was a more Romeo and Juliet like tragic story, I think not every game or movie has to end in a picture perfect happy ending way.
I’m torn between this and the DOTF ending but I agree not everything needs a happy ending. I mean X didn’t have a happy or perfect ending but it was still a classic! Final Fantasy XV was perfect the way it was with the dlc that it ended up having. Episode Ardyn was such a good way to push Ardyn’s backstory to allow us to sympathize with him more as a character.
I don't when the deaths are mostly meaningless. It kills Ardyn, not the disease. Tradegy is fine, but not empty tragedy. Its literally the same space disease as 7. 7 already tells you just getting rid of the conduit only stops spread (bc geostigma came after). It also makes no sense there wasnt much attempt to change. What's the tragedy? Brainwash a 20yo for 10y until he accepts to do it. That's dumb. Also its closer to Hamlet.....
It's infuriating that companies are selling incomplete products and only complete them after release, or not even that, and it's saddening that customer, knowingly, spend thousands of dollars on incomplete products. I will never purchase a game before it's complete (except games like Tekken 7, which are complete on release and then new features and characters are added but are not needed to experience the game as intended).
@@theflashgordon193 it was an extremely underrated film, loved it from start to finish and was expecting it to be confusing before going in watching it. After I finished the main story I was completely devastated for a day, couldn't even function properly, and it even dragged up my own personal experiences of loss. Luckily the next day I played episode Ignis and Ardyn, and confused about the lack of change from Ardyn's option to resist, I went online to read the outline of Dawn of the Future, and now I feel a sense of closure and I feel so much better. While it can be argued that DOTF is a little too idealistic and the plot is a little forced, I do agree that it would have completely pushed FFXV to the next level. If you were to play the main game and then go through both seasons of dlcs, you would be riding a rollercoaster of emotions and then ending on a high. This is especially so since the DLCs would not have a lot of sidequests to detract from the pacing of the storyline. That said, the main storyline is also amazing in its own right - I haven't been affected by a game's story so much, nor have I cried so much during a videogame, and I'm actually in my thirties. That in itself is already an amazing achievement in storytelling. Given the losses the studio was making (not sure why), I can understand the decision to stop development, especially since the story can already stand on its own. I'm glad though that DOTF came out - even if I don't read the full story, just knowing the existence of the alternate ending (or true ending) and that Noctis and Luna didn't need to sacrifice themselves, that the 4 dudes didn't need to be separated, that is enough.
Got this book on my birthday, now enjoy the reading. The whole development story of ff xiii versus to ffxv is very sad. Ironically, those who came to end the projet, failed to bring it to an end.
I loved this game but I feel so sad that we did not get the chance to see the story as it was originally planned I was so insanely excited with the first trailer that I wouldn’t have minded waiting more to receive the original product ;-; I’m still hoping we will get to see it someday
i used to think that the story of XV should have been left alone, and that if it was meant to be a tragic story people should leave it be. but i was also never ever satisfied with the story at all. the ending felt meaningless, especially after playing Episode: Ardyn and seeing that he knew his fate all along and wanted Noct to succeed. but lately i feel like the cancelled DLC would be pretty exciting. it'd be like a pseudo FFXV-2, given that it brings the game to what you have rightfully called a storybook ending. and i wasn't sure if Square Enix would ever consider doing this before, but as we now see with the FF7 remake trilogy, this is exactly what they're doing with that story. the story has already been written and they already have most of whats needed to put FFXV's cancelled DLC together. i think its entirely possible that they would revisit XV in future and stitch together a more cohesive base game including the chocobro's DLC, and then supplementing it with Dawn of the Future. that would be truly epic.
Another good analysis, though I have to admit I have far more mixed feelings of Dawn of the Future's story than even the main XV's story. Primarily, what bugs me about the story is its attempts to fix story points from the game are extremely obvious and come off as pretty fanficy in a lot of cases, such as Ardyn's sudden switch from villain back to hero. Sure, it works in the context of just Dawn to the Future, but when taken against his deliberate actions in the main story, it falls flat considering what he did. Another is how shamelessly it tries to reuse Fabula Nova Crystallis story elements, especially from Lightning Returns after years of them saying they were going to distance themselves from this games origin as an FNC game. Plus, their attempts to reference Versus XIII by completely recontextualizing things like the logo (again) and trying to make a new relevance for Somnus in a completely blatant way with the character of Somnus Lucis Caelum. And Luna's characterization still is not great, nor are the attempts to try make her and Noctis' relationship have any depth. And the ending is, in my opinion, too sappy and cheery for a game that was originally intended to be tragedy. And yeah, it's an alternate ending, but that still doesn't change the fact that Final Fantasy XV, even when it was Versus XIII, was stated to always be a tragedy, as Nomura and Kitase once said the ending was going to leave the player devastated for some time even after finishing it. However this isn't saying the story is bad. Because I appreciated certain things about it, like that it made the attempt to actually give Luna a character arc, even if I personally thought it was still under baked. And I do truly agree that it could have been much better as an actual game than as a novel, because then we would finally have gotten a chance to play through things we were promised such as that easter egg of Versus XIII you mentioned. And the gameplay elements mentioned for Episode Aranea would have been some of the most intense gameplay experiences. And it actually would have been worth playing Episode Luna simply to see how they'd make a compelling gameplay experience with this problematic character that they never seemed to know what they wanted to do with. It truly is a shame Dawn of the Future was cancelled, because I too think it could have been special if only for what it could have brought to the table gameplay wise. Though, I also just think that it was a waste considering the Mod Tools and Level and Scenario Editor were cancelled alongside it. And I think that's what hit me hardest about it, because it would have led to so much one could do with FFXV even after the game's lifespan concluded. Oh well, I can only hope the unexpected development Nomura mentioned last year will have something to do with this game, though who knows. I am sorry for the long post, but I did have quite a lot of thoughts for this that I also couldn't get through all the way without making it longer. As I said last time, do keep up the good work.
Your feedback is appreciated. Love seeing passionate opinions from fans like myself. I sort of felt like DOTF was a consolation prize for hanging around while they tried to fix XV's world. Here's our greatest hits album, just for the fans. I'm in a unique situation where I feel heartbroken over Versus XIII, but can still appreciate and enjoy some of what Tabata's team did with XV. Either way, I thank you for taking the time to watch and write down your thoughts.
Final Fantasy XV honestly leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The second season of DLC would have redeemed it. But they literally betrayed their fans and didn’t give a damn.
should not have a STORY DLC to begin with, if you want to release a story dlc you need a complete and comprehensible story in the base game first not through update and story changes after release when most fans had finished the game, honestly i'm so glad they cut it short.
I enjoyed DotF way more than the game. A part of me wonders if they took old concepts and ideas they had planned for Versus and put it towards it because of how strongly the FNC lore seems to come across. Also, the fact Luna seems like a different character compared to her in game counterpart and the fact they literally had scrapped concept art of Stella standing with Noctis, holding her rapier in the art section. I would have taken DotF as a full game in itself over what we got with ffxv. And I wish I didn't feel that way. FFXV had so much potential and held so much promise, only to be an average type of game at best.
Stella’s story was ‘not family friendly’ so SE basically threw it all in the bin. Sound logic. 🤦 At least XVI seems to be shaping up to be whatever it’s going to be, especially since XIV is blowing up so hard and carrying SE financially now.
it sucks to be fan of FFXV =( Though VII is good...but I want FFXV remade THE RIGHT WAY, which will never happen cause ramaking VII will take another 10 years.
Still mad at Nomura because he let Versus XIII (his ‘favorite child’?) slip through his fingers by wasting so much time AND he put Tabata into a position where he had to make 80% of the game with less time than he had with the game. The game could have been so much better even with just 1 more year of development. If they’d made Episode Arenea instead of Episode Ardyn it would gave paid for the other 3 DLCs. I loved EA but Arenea would have been so much better.
Don't blame Nomura. Square is entirely at fault here. They kept pulling people away from Versus to work on other projects, leaving the Versus team and Nomura with progressively less manpower and ultimately stalling development for long periods of time. There were also issues with the engine Versus was originally being made on, and they wound up scrapping that engine and making a new one...and then did it again...and then said "fuck it, Unreal works better". So Nomura and the Versus team had to go back to one several times. Square booted him from the project-which ruined his reputation and may have actually traumatized him-and replaced him with a yes man who rushed the game out. All because Square can't fucking handle focusing on just one or two games at a time and perpetually spread their developers too thin.
@@youlleatamuffinandlikeit4596 Lol fuck Square Enix for blaming their inhouse engine all the time. It feels like they are only making excuses with their game engines.
I agree there should not have been an Episode Ardyn, but for different reasons. I hate it when a story tries to paint the villain in a good light, or at least tries to make us sympathize with him. The way he was portrayed in the base game was "good enough" in that respect. He was evil and wanted to do evil things.
Well, that' a shame this has never been realised. I was wondering how much of an asshole Bahamut came across in FF 15, and especially episode Ardyn. At least with the ending everyone would have been given their due.. A lesson from all that? Never split the good parts of the game and leave it broken, to sell them off as DLCs. Because there may not be an audience that could go back to it.
Hey like your videos, UA-cam recommend you on my tv. Anyways love your FF15 videos wish you told the full story Instead of recommending the books. I get they go into more detail but as a fan and someone who just discovered your channel I wish you would’ve provided that content. Good start overall I subscribed. Maybe do a Yozora FF versus video. Or FF7 content.
I've been thinking of doing a retrospective docu-style vid on FFXV covering its whole lifecycle, but at the moment, I'm trying to finish up some video projects I put off a while back. Maybe we'll see what the future holds. A little hint at one video I'm working on, it's related to FF XIII.
I guess that'll serve as a lesson for devs and publishers to be less unhinged in their practices. From one off show builds , movie , one off demos , tons and tons of unnecessary animations that dont even look right most of the time and fashion fuckery , we ended up not getting 3 pieces of dlc that would've lead to a satisfying ending because "it costs too much". Ff16 and 7 already look more focused . I love FF15 because after 100 hours of junping from media to media and dlc to dlc you'll inevitably Stockholm syndrome into liking it , but it oozes with wasted potential, lack of focus and unnecessary parts. This game has a dungeon nothing like anything in the game, a marvel of intricate level design reminiscent of destiny's raids , and its hidden away deep in the game , not even needing to do it to get the platinum. It just exists for no reason
You should do a video on final fantasy type 0/agito at some point if you didn’t know it has some very interesting history that is similar to ffxv and versus xiii in some ways
Not sure if it will be talking about the same thing, but I will be doing a video surrounding Type-0. That is still early in the works though. I have a few more videos to do first.
The core problem with XV's development post-Nomura was always the lack of a clear vision and Dawn of the Future didn't look like it was going to offer any solutions or improvements on that front. It was literally created because the developers ran a poll on what fans would like to see. Say what you will about the base game's story, but at least it's an adaptation of a script created by people with a clear vision who wanted to tell a clear story. XV was a story about maturing and rising to accept the mantle of responsibility, no matter how painful that might be - Dawn of the Future flips it and tells a fanfiction-tier story where everybody gets to live happily ever after because you have to Defy Fate. It's boring. Don't get me wrong, I'm sad about the DLC getting cancelled as well, but that's just because of all of the additional gameplay and assets we would've gotten - I don't trust that the actual narrative presentation would've been good, especially after how bad Episode Ardyn was.
Hey there. Love your content. Subscribed for every future video you put out. Although, I have to mention that the quality of your voice recording could do with a bit of an upgrade. It's not your voice - it could be the equipment you're using, I find it a bit uncomfortable to listen to the audio while I'm multitasking. Again, love your content and can't wait for you to blow up - I can say I was one of the few people who was there when you had only 50 subscribers :)
I've had the book for about two years and the ardyn dlc but I can't touch them because f I do and finish them I'll just be confirming how inept I think tabata is. I mean Nomura is not a director that's not where his strengths are but tabata equally needs someone to really push him to focus. Forspoken is a shame itself, maybe it's less tabata being a people pleaser and more of a square problem
Haha, that would be nice, though in this case, I would prefer a remake by Tabata, since I like the happy ending, but without the "defying fate" and "villain is actually a good guy" tropes. I hate those.
It’s called Dynamic Stance, wherein Royal Arms will barrage the targeted Foe as Noctis deals normal attacks. Think of it as a temporary buff. Only accessible via Armiger Unleashed
I didn´t like this alternate ending to be honest... it retcons a lot of stuff and my boy Ardyn doesn´t get his happy ending... still bad though Spoilers. Noctis abandoning the chocobros... the prophecy not being fulfilled, Shiva dying resurrecting Luna... why not Aera and Ardyn too so they can have a life? Psss... I preffer the original ending and the alternate Ignis one.
Honestly I'd rather have a kingsglave game. I find those characters, story, and combat way more interesting than noctics and his friends. Nyx and Crow are so much cool. And I would love to play as them. Don't get me wrong. I love the boys, but the the story and combat in 15 is a mess. Nyx and Crow are soo much cooler. And I would love to play as them.
I honestly think FFXV is the worst mainline FF game ever made. Besides the obvious issues - big, empty, boring open world, baffling storytelling, generic characters, shallow customization. The main problem is nothing about it feels like an FF game.
It's probably because they actually took time to fully develop a narrative direction rather than force a lot of things with poor pacing. Just a theory.
Though mankind may not realize final fantasy 15 is incomplete and yozora will be confirmed to be noctis nobody in kh4 and sora and noctis will team up with ardyn and fight bahamut and master of masters and sora will be like why do I have a feeling I've seen this guy but haven't ps bahamut was gonna be a summon in kh1 but it didn't happen sadly
So like when I have square enix I'll just make this dlc and be like to the director sup loser remember this dlc or at least a remake that you couldn't do well just wanted to say I acomplished what you didn't
this ending actually feels more like a final fantasy game- the girl comes back to life when the world needs her most, the villain has a tragic past and reforms, the hero returns matured and the villain redeems himself by sacrifice, so that light can return

He was evil and wanted to do evil things.
nothing beats the saddest Versus 13
I can't tell if this comment is being truthful or sarcastic. Regardless, I agree. Versus XIII is my jam.
Very nice description. It's motivated me to get DotF.
@@installation7 you should definitely do that
Maybe we will get Dawn of the Future in a sequel game instead of DLCs. It is time for Tabata Return, Final Fantasy XV-2
The fact they traded this legendary dlc for a forsaken is one of the greatest insults I modern gaming
Final Fantasy XVI was far into pre-production by 2018. SE wanted to move on and focus on the next installment.
The audio is likely due to the room I record in not being the best for audio capture, but it's all I got at the moment.
* Patiently waiting FFXV remake in the next 20 years *
I've had the book for about two years and the ardyn dlc but I can't touch them because f I do and finish them I'll just be confirming how inept I think tabata is. I mean Nomura is not a director that's not where his strengths are but tabata equally needs someone to really push him to focus. Forspoken is a shame itself, maybe it's less tabata being a people pleaser and more of a square problem
Fans need to revive this like JL Zack Snyders cut
Haha, that would be nice, though in this case, I would prefer a remake by Tabata, since I like the happy ending, but without the "defying fate" and "villain is actually a good guy" tropes. I hate those.
Still depressed after this
What’s this move called at 4:50?
By the way amazing video !
It’s called Dynamic Stance, wherein Royal Arms will barrage the targeted Foe as Noctis deals normal attacks. Think of it as a temporary buff.

Is it really an impossible task to do a petition or something to have this turn into a remake
Yes, it is.
I hope they Snydercut this game
If I could mod games and mod ff15 I would make this a thing
I didn´t like this alternate ending to be honest... it retcons a lot of stuff and my boy Ardyn doesn´t get his happy ending... still bad though
Spoilers.
Noctis abandoning the chocobros... the prophecy not being fulfilled, Shiva dying resurrecting Luna... why not Aera and Ardyn too so they can have a life? Psss... I preffer the original ending and the alternate Ignis one.
Understandable.
So like let's find that idiot who canceled it and make him say okay I'll make it
I honestly think FFXV is the worst mainline FF game ever made. Besides the obvious issues - big, empty, boring open world, baffling storytelling, generic characters, shallow customization. The main problem is nothing about it feels like an FF game.
A fair set of critiques. Thanks for watching, nonetheless.
The dawn of the future was a amazing book despite hating FFXV. How can a book can be better in a novel than a book which I find it ironic.
It's probably because they actually took time to fully develop a narrative direction rather than force a lot of things with poor pacing. Just a theory.
I'm gonna beat the guy that canceled him and make him do the dlc anyone wanna do it cause I'm actually just gonna sit back and enjoy it
So Noctis survived ?
Yep.
Let's just say they just weren't smart :T
Though mankind may not realize final fantasy 15 is incomplete and yozora will be confirmed to be noctis nobody in kh4 and sora and noctis will team up with ardyn and fight bahamut and master of masters and sora will be like why do I have a feeling I've seen this guy but haven't ps bahamut was gonna be a summon in kh1 but it didn't happen sadly
Luckily I didn't get FF15 lol. Not saying it's a bad game.
My hope lies in whatever Verum Rex is... I just hope it's worth the hype.
So like when I have square enix I'll just make this dlc and be like to the director sup loser remember this dlc or at least a remake that you couldn't do well just wanted to say I acomplished what you didn't
FFXV left us with a Phantom Pain
