    What a lovely boat you've built, and really quite large, too!
    I particularly like the cabin windows, large and plenty of them.
    She looks to be a strongly built boat which has plenty of space for fishing and relaxing.
    Sensible use of the auxiliary motor.

      Carvin -- don't forget to go on over to fishyfish.com. Great group of guys that will help you get through any questions while building your Tolman. If you're in Maryland, you can stop by the boat barn... always something going on in there. Just pulled out a 24' Jumbo to be used on the Chesapeake bay. Next up is a 30' by 9.5' Great Alaskan Kodiak.

      ALL I think of now is that answer.. to those exact measurements..its killing me to figure it out...My book will be arriving in a few more days from Alaska.. I live in Florida, so it may be a week more.. so glad I've found All of you fine people bro. !!!!

      I haven't personally filmed the boat running, but there are a couple videos out there. I'll see if I can find them and upload to my channel. One of the videos I'll try to find is of the Jumbo running around 32knots about 60 miles offshore in the Atlantic. (It was a pretty calm day though lol)

    • @cj8mule
      @cj8mule  6 років тому +1

      Since these are home built boats, my answer is just my opinion and someone could certainly build cheaper or spend less time building. Mine was built for around 25k without electronics in about 800 hours. I'd say an average number would be 40k.
      I spent around 800 hours, but 500 hours is a good number. I ended up building all the aluminum rod holders, rocket launcher, and hand rails which took a lot of time.

    That’s a lot of sanding you had to do. I kno from experience lol. I have a porter cable DA electric that works great

    • @cj8mule
      @cj8mule  6 років тому +2

      You're right Rob, but it wasn't that bad. I used a few long boards I made, some pneumatic board files, DA sanders, and electric sanders. I made a few of my scarfs poorly and just used drywall mud knifes and 6' floats. Thanks for watching!

    • @cj8mule
      @cj8mule  6 років тому +2

      That was a lot of sanding, but scraping it while green helps. Although, many people don't sand and just leave a work boat finish.

    My onewuestion is why make it out of plywood then cover itall in fiberglass? Waterproofing? Strength? Looks?all of the above? Thanks!

    • @cj8mule
      @cj8mule  6 років тому +1

      Short answer is yes to all of the above. This boat will last more than my lifetime as long as the epoxy/fiberglass is not breached. If it gets breached.... just fix it!
      Here's another short answer... it's easy to build. I mean easy! Anyone with minimum woodworking skills can build this boat. Some epoxy and wood flour(saw dust) can fix any mistakes you make. In fact, I had to remind myself not to make cabinet grade cuts. You want gaps in your joints to let the epoxy fillets to soak in.

    Did you foam the bottom ? I've seen some boat builders cut holes and then shoot it in one corner and then wait a while until it comes up in the other corner so it's better for the waves and comfort

    • @davidwilson1288
      @davidwilson1288 6 років тому +2

      I don't like the pour in foam and certainly wouldn't recommend it. If you want extra flotation, I would use closed cell sheet foam or pool noodles.

    Why not build one with fiberglass

    • @cj8mule
      @cj8mule  2 місяці тому

      Interesting comment... this boat is a plywood cored fiberglass boat. A notable difference between this boat covered in e-glass and epoxy is the weight. A similar 27' boat built with a mold and chopped fiberglass / polyester resin would weigh twice as much. This boat weighs in around 4300 pounds wet.

    A break deck would have been suited to this boats sheer, would have allowed the cuddy to be lower in height and a much dryer vessel. I definitely would have taken a few degrees off the sheer caps and made it a bit safer to walk or egress and regress the vessel which I find very unnecessary to have, thus levelling the gunnels somewhat. Not my boat so what can I say.

    • @cj8mule
      @cj8mule  6 років тому +1

      Well.... thanks for watching. I've put over 2000 nm on her this year alone with many of those 60 to 80 nm offshore. I assure you, it rides dry.

    • @davidwilson1288
      @davidwilson1288 6 років тому +1

      Look up Novi lobster boat. Some boats break the gunwale upwards next to the pilot house and raise the sheer. This boat is a Tolman Jumbo which wouldn't be a Tolman Jumbo without the dory flare.

    • @johngoodell2775
      @johngoodell2775 6 років тому +1

      Seems like that is designed for crab lobster trap hauling near the steering wheel? Tolmans are known to be pretty dry - the chine flats and spray rails etc. dont think there is much to improve upon

    • @johngoodell2775
      @johngoodell2775 6 років тому

      It is a composite design. Instead of more framing typical of dory types, this design creates a very strong and lightweight hull with more usable hull space. The tolman 20' standard skiff can fly on a 30 hp. Frames and stringers of typical dories also create points of water capture that leads to rot. The Tolman interior hull is thus easier to maintain.
