Don't worry, if you were in an elevator when this happened it would only recall to the ground level and you could push a button to have the smoke guard rise for a short time to let you out.
Yes it will, but it makes it a hell of a lot easier and faster and safer for the fire department to extinguish the fire. Since there is a clear field of view without smoke.

At Jeremy...no....smoke control is only supposed to be used post fire, when it has been extinguished.
