I’ll admit that I didn’t like TCM 2 for many years. But, after all of the remakes and different takes that have happened, I’ve grown to appreciate it and really like it for what it is in recent years.

Love choptop, and I watched this movie back in the day when it was new. But upon rewatching recently I came up with that question you're addressing. I can't recall where but I had heard just a bit of the Vietnam explanation. I never got the full explanation though, so thanks again!
That was their plan in the original draft of the film's script. There was also another script for a different sequel where The Hitchhiker would've been tied to a tree to keep him alive. But I'm guessing as the character evolved and they couldn't get back Ed Neal that they decided it was better to just make him into his own character, and thus Chop Top was born.
