Tokyo Vice for me definitely one of the best mini series in HBO Asia I've ever watch. From the cinematography, the costume and the set itself is so magnificent. Love the bromance between Ansel and Sato especially when they sing along to the backstreet boys song( I want it that way) in the car. It's really bring me back to the great 90's . Can't wait to finish the series.
You can tell Ansel Elgort is fluent in Japanese. Maybe not 100%, but definitely fluent enough to live in Japan and not have to worry about language issues. I have to believe he learned it long before he was chosen for this role. Otherwise, his learning curve for picking up foreign languages is off the charts.

I've actually read somewhere that he started learning Japanese for this role. He studied for 4 hours a day, every day for 4 weeks. It is pretty impressive his dedication.

Just finished season 1. One of the best shows I've watched in a long long time. So we'll done. Costume Design, Story, Acting, Production Design, Cinematography absolutely phenomenal. Im learning Japanese rn and hope to one day live/work in Japan as a designer. Cannot wait for Season 2!
Kudos to my man for giving 110% to learning the language for the role. He really benefit from having learned a second language. Thats commitment. I remember Edward Norton use to be fluent in Japanese because he use to work there before becoming an actor but he kinda forgot how to speak it. I hope Ansel keeps at it!
I love this show, so deep and great actors, great script and drama. I just wish there was subtitles on this interview, I would love to hear what everyone was saying.
To those interested in Ansel's Japanese progress and possibly setting unrealistic language expectations for themselves: I speak Japanese at a pretty high level and it's fairly obvious that this was carefully rehearsed. He had specific things to say about each cast member that I'm sure he rehearsed a whole lot as a good actor would. His Japanese is not bad at all considering the amount of time he's had, but I'm also sure it's in actuality nowhere near the level that this orchestrated panel portrays. A better Japanese speaker wouldn't have moved on to new topics without a logical connective tissue the way he did, and would have quipped with the others more. Still, it's really cool that he seems to be almost crossing the beginner threshold into intermediate. I've just been seeing some people say he's basically fluent, which isn't quite true.

The fact Ansel Elgort’s Japanese sounds like a fluent nihonjin is wild. First off, learning Japanese is extremely difficult, and to learn in the short timeline that he did and to sound like that, with all the natural pauses and succinct sentences is extremely impressive. Shoutout to anybody who learns another language in a short timeline to get in character. That’s wild af.
Coming from Japanese Native myself. I can see that he didn’t just memorize that for the press conference. He actually speaks Japanese. Sure he has an accent but other than that it’s perfect. He’s good. 8/10
As a Japanese-American, he definitely speaks real Japanese here- definitely not memorized, you can see him try to find alternate words if he trips up. arguably speaks better than a lot of Japanese Americans hahaha
The series start kind of slow and as the episodes move forward, the whole story started to become so engaging and fast paced and all of the sudden I reached the final episode of the season and when I saw that there was no episode 9 then I went.. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DON"T LEAVE ME LIKE THIS UNTIL NEXT SEASON..... NOOOOOOOOOO.... excellent story excelent actors both Japaneses and Americans... can't wait for season 2

日本語を外国人の方に何人も教えた事がありますが、このレベルの日本語話者に短期間でなるためには、本当に毎日長時間継続して語学学習しなければなりません。学問、仕事での必要性がかなりある人か、日本の文化に対して、かなり関心がある人でないと、モチベーションも普通は続きません。もちろん、彼が日本で生活しながら、毎日共演者の方々と会話をする機会があったのは、大きいアドバンテージになっていると思いますが、それにしても本当に素晴らしいと思います。

アンセル、めちゃくちゃ謙虚だし勤勉家だ。凄い…なんか勝手にヤンチャな印象あったけどこれでめちゃくちゃ好きになった！
今5話まで見たところでは９０年代後半から2000年初頭東京がドラマの主な時間的な舞台なんです。見ている瞬間はやっぱり安っぽい感じではなくハリウッドの巨大な予算の力であの時の日本に戻っている感じがするほど当時の空気とか雰囲気の再現度が素晴らしいでした。特にあの時代に若い時を過ごした人々は懐かしくて涙が出てしまうかもしれません。主なあらすじは大手新聞記者、ヤクザ、警察がお互い絡み合ってシリアス展開が好みの方には期待を裏切らない大満足な作品だと思います。
英語圏の人って他の国の言語まったく興味なくて観光先の簡単な言葉すら覚えない人も多いし、よく来日する俳優でもここまで日本語喋れる人いないのにアンセル本当に勉強熱心ですごいと思う。有名監督によく起用されるのもわかるなあ

アメリカ人の合気道の先生が楽しみにしていたドラマだったので、それで私も観てみました
ところどころストーリーの細かいところにあれ？と思うところもあったけど、途中から盛り上がって目が離せなくなっていました
あと2000年前後の日本を懐かしみたい気持ちもあったのですが、外でのシーンに明らかに当時はなかったものが映り込んでいたりとかもあって、そこはつっこみながら楽しみました
