Masséna if you recall had recently requested Leave, citing exhaustion & illness. No doubt his morale was low at this point, which couldn’t have helped in the losses.
I don’t respect Masséna’s character really, but there is no doubting his superb capabilities, especially before he became a Marshall. If he’s losing battles, somethings very wrong.

He was a shockingly remorseless looter. I am not naive to the hardships of the time & likely would’ve looted myself to some degree, but Masséna was corrupt to his core.
