Unused sits at the edge overlooking a lake while gazing up at the sky. He wonders how life had turned out to be this way, how it might have been before it went downhill. He imagines how Sonic felt back when, he wondered how he felt to have a companion, friends, people who actually cared for him. As he nurtured this idea, he slowly morphed into a form of Sonic that he either remembered or thought he knew. Like instinct he started to train his voice to try and match his appearance with a song he remembered from long ago. As he started he thought of whom might join him in chorus and found it fitting to use Tails' voice. Gazing up at the night sky and reciting the lyrics of his old melody he hears a difference in Tails' voice, it wasn't young, innocent and chipper, it was older, despondent and confused. His gaze dashed to his side with his head tilting ever slightly, but it was not out of fear, but of curiosity and surprise. He could see the origin of the voice, it was Tails. Unused stood up and faced him. He was scruffy, bags under his eyes and a fearful and shocked expression on his face, almost like he'd seen a ghost. Unused was taken back by this, but still sang his song with his attempted Sonic voice as it seemed to be working. He saw the state Tails was in and felt sorry for him. Unused knew that Tails was Sonic's best friend, and he adorned his look, he knew revealing his true identity would shatter the Fox's last line of hope. He continues singing through his confusion, which not only calms himself but Tails to an extent as he seemed more comfortable. As they sing it is apparent that Tails also knows his song, which makes Unused questions whether he should really kill him or rather leave him be. As Tails gets more comfortable he chimes in for a duo, singing along Unknown as if he is singing with his long lost friend, the joyful and saddened/depressed look on his face made Unused feel something, was it pity? He didn't know. But he knew he couldn't stay, his facade would be blown open if he stayed longer. As Tails closed his eyes to hold back tears and ran up to Unused to give him a hug, Unused dashed for the thicket, leaving Tails on the cliff of the lake. He hid behind a tree and looked back, seeing that Tails had his arms stretched out infront of him almost like holding a brother who died in his arms, with tears streaming down his face.
Based off of Majin's dialogue in Surface about Unused "Trying too hard", maybe Tails knows deep down that Unused isn't really Sonic, but is just so desperate to see Sonic that he let himself be tricked. Sad...
Tails knew it wasn’t Sonic. Sonic was gone, and he knew that. Unused knew that too. He knew it, and he took this form to try and mess with the fox. But Tails… rolled with it. He knew it wasn’t Sonic, it couldn’t be, he *knew* it, but… it was nice to pretend again. And Unused? Well, he hadn’t even been treated like a person before. Even just this short session of pretending, of talking down Tails from making an awful decision, of being *nice* for once… it stirred something in him. He needed time to think.
I love that Unused isn't evil like all the other horrific Sonic impersonators out there. As soon as Tails spoke of suicide and how glad he was to see him, Unused was quick to rethink his motives. That's super nice and I love it very much. Thank you Nominal.
Maybe Unused isn't a ruthless shapeshifter that kills everything in his path like everyone thought, maybe he has a good heart, maybe he's in the same situation Tails is currently in. I like to think they're venting to each other in this song
i always assumed Unused was more like a mimikyu than anything else, a forgotten piece of history trying to imitate something successful for attention/friendship. i really hope we get a redemption arc in the coming songs ngl

I love the expression Unused's icon has. It gives a sense of confliction, a sense that Unused is feeling guilt and regret about what he was going to do. Knowing that he just saved Tails from the point of no return makes him question if he really wants to kill him, or anyone for that matter.

Tails, believing it was the real Sonic, didn't take the jump, and was glad to have his friend back. He doesn't know what he'll do after that, but he still wants to do the right thing, not just for himself, but for sonic, and all of of the people he's had a positive impact. Also, I hope the last song/one of the last, is a big all out with all the characters in this au. I.e a four-way fracture esque finale, with boyfriend, tails, knuckles, eggman, shadow, unused, Lord x, sunky and majin, all going up against xeno at the same time, with the final 2 sections being sonic and fleetway fighting of xeno/xain in sonics mind, and then fleetway delivering the final blow to xeno, destroying him once and for all.
Yeah, but the problem is.. Lord X and Fleetway are psycopaths, they won't or even try to do the right thing, so how can you say that LX and Fleet will help at all? But anyways, good prediction, hope it happens.

From this I think this is Unused's lore: This used to be a forgotten Sonic sprite that was given life by it's determination from not wanting to fade into obscurity and be forgotten. After it's revival it wanted revenge and tried killing people via lowering their guard by transforming into different beings, but upon meeting tails and seeing he was able to actually save the life of his "best friend" he starts to think over his actions... At least that's what I got, y'all can tell me what you think about the theory!

I think unused is unlike the other exes. I think they have malicious intentions like the exes, but unlike the others are actually able to emphasize and understand morality, which is why it says in the description: " unused starting to question their intentions." They intend to harm Tails, but they hold back once Tails starts to genuinely show sadness and hopelessness. Maybe when Unused takes the form of someone, unintentionally, they may also take that person's morals or emotional recognition with them... But that's just my 2 cents, make of it what you will...
its sad to know that unused was likely made to hunt the remaining survivors, or wanted to hunt those who did remain. Feels bad that tails has truly lost sonic, and for unused to use that to his advantage.

Coming back to this one brought a tear to my eye, I’m really glad of how far nominal has come, sure he may have lost some friends along the way but friends come and go, its family that never leaves you.

Tails want Sonic back so badly that he's willing to let himself be fooled by a clear fake just to have some semblance of his friend back... Alright assuming this is post xenophanes I’m guessing sonic didn’t reappear after fourway fracture. Who knows maybe he’s fighting xenophanes somewhere or he died with xenophanes. Well he was only just made so he’d be the replacement of Faker, or Revies EXE, but he seems to be similar to Faker in some ways, like the ability to mimic Sonic to a degree.

Now comes the problem. Eggman 100% is gonna know unused isnt sonic i mean eggman has been fighting sonic for years! He's gonna know. But i do feel like eggman wouldnt tell tails because he knows tails is in a bad place right now. Knuckles mkght notice and would start throwing hands 100% but now comes the questions of boyfriend and majin. We dont know if boyfriend is gonna come back but he's at least gonna hear that "sonic" is back when he talks with tails. But he's dumb so that means no problems there but majin could be the thing that changes how tails interacts with unused. Majin seems to *hate* unused with all of his being. Alright assuming this is post xenophanes I’m guessing sonic didn’t reappear after fourway fracture. Who knows maybe he’s fighting xenophanes somewhere or he died with xenophanes. (The latter would be a missed opportunity) majins still around so it’s possible he’s alive. Also here’s a theory about unused while he is a shapeshifting demon taking sonic appearance it appears it’s still new to him. Could this be a version of lord x who decided not to kill everyone? This could be the moment that changed everything for him.

Well he was only just made so he’d be the replacement of Faker, or Revies EXE, but he seems to be similar to Faker in some ways, like the ability to mimic Sonic to a degree.

Now comes the problem. Eggman 100% is gonna know unused isnt sonic i mean eggman has been fighting sonic for years! He's gonna know. But i do feel like eggman wouldnt tell tails because he knows tails is in a bad place right now. Knuckles mkght notice and would start throwing hands 100% but now comes the questions of boyfriend and majin. We dont know if boyfriend is gonna come back but he's at least gonna hear that "sonic" is back when he talks with tails. But he's dumb so that means no problems there but majin could be the thing that changes how tails interacts with unused. Majin seems to *hate* unused with all of his being. And i dont think stoping tails from jumping is gonna make him start being buddy buddy with unused. Maybe make him hate unused less jut majin would still be suspicious of unused.
