I read a couple books on the US revolutionary war...One book describes the announcement of the wars end and partys with drink flowing with both sides partying together...Today some Brits still see the revolutionary war as a family argument......and it's difficult not to when you can visit Washingtons family house , Jeffersons and Adams all in the UK...Only a few months ago I visited a church and stumbled on the grave of one of Washingtons grandfathers and was set back when I saw the Washington family crest closely resembling the US flag

I just find it mind-blowing that this little island we call Britain sailed to America in the 17th century by sail and a compass, docked, and built settlements up & down the east coast, shipping food, clothing, fuel, animals, building materials and people from Britain. How amazing is that, We are you, you are us, its why we are so close. We will never lose that bond.. even though you annoy us like little brothers do at times, but we will always love one another.
The American colonies were the British colonies that were established during the 17th and early 18th centuries in what is now a part of the eastern United States. The colonies grew both geographically along the Atlantic coast and westward and numerically to 13 from the time of their founding to the American Revolution.

The Great Al Murray said it best : " the USA see the war of Independence as a Victory, while the British see it as a Lucky Escape " 😇.....I am classed as a " hater " by my wife's N/American family because they cannot differentiate between light hearted humour and what the word hate actually means. It's in my DNA to take the piss and have a giggle teasing people due to my east end upbringing and long years as a construction manager ( I was in the same class as comedian Micky Flannagan at school ). I do not know of a single person who says they " hate the USA " apart from the odd Lefty on tv. We think it's fooked over there, but we say the same about our Island.

I'm Canadian, watching both countries in amazement. You're right: the piss-take within the UK is 100x of that directed across the pond. The US isn't ready for a Count Binface candidate, but they're slowly catching on. One day they'll be going "out out" for McJellied eels and mash.

The US is the annoying little brother, who grows up slightly spoilt, rebels a bit in their teenage years but also is there when he family emergencies happen, holding things together. Britain is the older sister who watches, often in disbelief, at the US antics, but is fast to defend them in an argument.

I thought we got out of slavery because of people like William Wilberforce!
When you think about it we’re actually all family…the ships that went to America when it was first established, or taken over was with ships of British colonists. So over decades America has had Americans but they started out from England. So you could say the only true Americans are Natives American Indians.

When we were young you could stand inside it. Whilst stood looking at the tree, some American's approached. One of the group said, my it must be valuable they've set mines around it. They were mole hills. On a more serious note, the world would be a much harsher place to live without them. God bless America.

OK, our Island is relatively small, but it's massively diverse, in it's habits, accents, politics, music, humour, history, religion, etc etc etc!
A lot of people say the further north you travel, the nicer the welcome becomes!
I'm not 100% behind that assumption, cos I've met some great southerners, as well as some a-hole northerners, so just take people as you find them, wherever you find them, & you won't go far wrong! 😁

This is really misrepresenting history and is so incredibly brief.
Britain and the USA had competing interests and were not part of the same financial system. America intentionally broke up the British Empire's imperial preference, indebted britain in the wars (note that Britain actually defaulted on its WW1 debts) and intentionally collapsed the empire over the Suez affair. The USA was supportive of Anglo-French intervention to retain its possessions but publicly turned against the European Colonial powers when they tried a plausible deniability strategy with Israel. Had the UK just gone in, then the USA had actually given assurances they would give public backing. The Europeans did not expect the USA to turn against the allies, particularly during the height of the cold war. However, instead they threatened war and broke the UK will on the world's stage. Militarily it had been a success but economically Britain had to surrender to American demands. After Britain was publicly diminished, they took over authority of the free world. Britain has to use soft-power ever since to play upon an emotional and cultural attachments between the USA and Britain. This is only because the UK has been reduced to a Minor Great Power and has been replaced by the USA as a superpower. We are friends because we have/had to be but we were still rivals until the USA dismantled the UK's global preeminence.

  • @andrewcoates6641

Even today in the corridors of power of both countries there remains a degree of distrust, mainly due to the personal attitudes of one of the former ambassadors of the USA to the court of King James during the 1930’s, one Joseph Kennedy senior (father of JFK,) who argued for isolation from Europe and actively opposed the lease lend policies and the supply of arms to the United Kingdom and to the Russian people. He also was opposed to the UK , because of his own family history of supporting the IRA before they emigrated from Ireland to America.

Wasn't the war of independence fought between 1775-83? If so, what happened in 1812? And also, the statement "shoulder to Shoulder" during the 1st world war....only the last few months like! USA was a tad late to that conflict!!!
