  • Yet another one of the most underrated UK punk bands of all time. Brilliant song writing and brilliant/intelligent lyrics miles above many more well known Punk bands. This classic is from their first album, "Beggars Can Be Choosers"(1983). "As The Newtown Neurotics, the band began their career playing punk heavily indebted stylistically to The Clash and The Ramones. Over the course of the 1980s, the band dropped the "Newtown" from its name and simply became The Neurotics; along with the name change came a stylistic broadening, including slower tempos and horn arrangements. They released several albums on noted UK postpunk label Jungle Records. Lead singer and guitarist Steve Drewett took openly socialist stances in his lyrics throughout the course of the band's career and currently displays an anarcho-syndicalist sticker on his guitar."

I found this after watching a Black Flag concert where Rollins dedicates a song to them and calls them a, "fucking great band." He wasn't lying. I can't believe I've never heard this before.

Nu Six I have that same Black Flag concert on VHS. It's the one where Rollins reads a bit from Henry Miller in the beginning. I saw Black Flag several times around that time. Amazing.

My first band used to cover this song in the 80s. Even in the punk scene in the U.S., few people had heard of the Neurotics. I wrote to Steve Drewett back then proposing that they tour the U.S. with us (we were also a trio), but it never panned out.

How bout the cover of Solitary Confinement by the Members and changed it to Living on Unployment! Either way, both bands rocked that song!

Saw them with Attila the Stockbroker in Lübeck (85 or 86), brilliant.

    The Mess.
Saturday night smashed out of my brains
laying on the floor looking really intelligent
oh what's news I hear you say
all of my dreams have gone down the drain
It just goes to show I wasn't paying attention
things just worsened day by day
    in every way.
    Chorus:
    oh, oh look at me
I'm as hip as i can be
I'm wasted, just look at the mess I am in.
Spent half of the night walking the streets
looking for a party that never existed
every week is just the same
well we talked about s** but never of love
we bragged about girls with which we'd had fun
oh but the thing that's really sad
    we never had.
    Chorus:
I was brilliant at school but not in exams
my teachers they could not understand
how five years work went to the wall
and then I got into trouble 'cos I got in the way
when things went wrong, well I got the blame
I was Idle through no fault of my own
    none of my own.
    Chorus:
oh, look at me no-one 'round here wants me
I'm wasted just look at the mess I am in.
Down there, they are laughing at you
down there, it is you who's gonna get screwed
down there, they will walk all over you
down there, down there, down there.

    mis profes no podían entender
oh mírame nadie me quiere demasiado cerca
    (¡vamos, vamos,
    el ritmo bajo,
    siéntanse como
    The Ramones,
    vamos hombre vamos!)
