I believe you would learn to appreciate why some people may feel this way if you learned about Robert K Merton's Strain Theory most specifically learned more about Ritualism under the Deviance Typology system he outlines in that theory. The core idea is that there are socially accepted cultural goals that people spend time pursuing and trying to acquire and there are socially accepted means by which one reaches those goals and each distinct type of person in his Deviance Typology graph has a different way of engaging with those means and goals. Strain Theory emphasizes the way in which participation in society can lead to criminal behavior but the typology set out doesn't necessarily only apply to that and can explain a lot of other distinct social phenomena and help get a better perspective on why people are the way they are. Specifically with Ritualism people who fall under that typology tend to not align themselves with the socially approved goals of their culture but still participate in the means to acquire those goals either because they don't know what else to do with themselves, because its simply the way their community lives or for various other reasons. I believe this idea of a "Liberal Muslim" that you have is probably directly tied to that approach to religious culture wherein people who do not have strong ties to the goals of Islam who do not necessarily feel strongly about the rules and teachings still participate in the religion because its what they know and its how they were raised. These types may loosely adhere to the rules or participate in Islamic culture either simply because they feel social pressure too or they don't know what else to do with themselves and haven't yet reached a point in life where they pursue other ways of life or because they value something they get out of participation that isn't necessarily related to the broader rules and teachings of the religion itself like gaining a sense of community through participation for example. I feel as though it is common in every religion that most devotees are not strict practitioners of their religion and simply hold loose views fostered by their religion and that proper detailed worship and adherence isn't necessarily important to them (especially in countries/cultures that have looser ties to religion supplanted by political ideology like heavily capitalist or communist countries which almost worship the market/state respectively in place of religion). I personally believe that these types of people should not necessarily be held to the same standards as more devout followers as their goal is not to be a model muslim/christian etc in the first place which means no amount of condemnation of their behavior nor encouragement to follow the commandments set out by your faith will amount to a true desire for connection with god and adherence to the teachings and while that may not be their goal in the present if it ever does become their goal they will find their own path and worship and you can help lead them and light the way but ultimately you can not be the one to choose that for someone within their heart.

That's not how it works. It's important to understand the full context of this concept. In Islam, we believe that Allah's guidance is indeed supreme, as mentioned in the Qur'an. But this guidance that you mentioned is linked to a person's own intentions and efforts. Allah guides those who sincerely seek his guidance and are willing to follow the right path. This doesn't mean that a person can be careless or indifferent about their faith. We are responsible for seeking knowledge, making sincere efforts to do good, and avoiding misguidance. If we turn away from the truth or ignore Allah's guidance, we can indeed go astray. But if we sincerely ask for Allah's guidance and strive to stay on the right path, then, with Allah's help, no one can lead us astray.
