    Hey Alexa thanks so much for sharing your journey. I just had surgery today. Watching your videos has been very uplifting for me and feels like you are on my side through my journey. My family only makes things more stressful for me, so thank you for your kindness and calmness, it's helping me with the emotional side of getting through this. Thank you again :)

    Hi Alexa. Great video series. Thank you for putting them together. I also had the surgery for my grade 3 complete rupture. I am just starting post-op week 6. A few things for anyone going thru this: My surgeon used the jig device for the "percutaneous surgery" which is only a 1 cm cut with 3 stitches. I wanted to let anyone know who is going thru this to ask about this option as a smaller cut reduces infection risk and improves recovery time. I was asked before the surgery if I wanted the ultrasound-guided nerve block. I know there are some risks with that, so my surgeon said that since the location of my tendon break left sufficient length on my heel, that he would be able to just sew the two ends and not have to put a screw into the bone - this meant that the surgery would be less painful and no pre-nerve block would be needed. He said that instead of the risky ulrasound injection, that he put a local nerve block for pain at the site during the surgery, that kept me free from pain for 3 days afterwards. This was great as it also allowed me to deal with any pain with only the prescribed Tylenol and not opioids like Oxycontin which I wanted to avoid. For anyone in the Pittsburgh/Morgantown area going thru this - I recommend Dr. Naji Madi at Ruby Hospital in Morgantown. He is a foot and ankle specialist who is really great and takes all the time to answer your questions and explain the procedure. Very caring individual too. Finally, I received my bill a few days ago. The total bill (not including rehab) for the surgery and appointments is about $3,500 of which my insurance covered everything except $1,250. I was pleasantly surprised. My questions to you are about pain and swelling at my stage (6 weeks). My foot still gets some swelling when I am up and moving round in the boot. I have to sit with foot elevated and sometimes ice. How long did you experience this? Second, you mentioned pain during rehab. How bad is the pain and how do you know what is just pain that is normal and what might be pain from overworking it/re-injury? I am trying to walk without the crutches right now as I only have 1 wedge left in my boot and it's mentally hard to put weight on it - i have no pain but it feels like so much pressure on my tendon that I fear re-injury. When did you feel comfortable enough to stop using the crutches? Was it when you first started rehab, or before and I am just behind a bit? Thank you and I hope you have fully recovered!

    • @HelloImAlexa
      @HelloImAlexa  Рік тому +2

      Wow thanks for sharing all that! Super interesting. I remember some swelling around that time - minimal but if it ever happened I could just ice and it would go down.
      Second, my pain would only really come on after PT so it was always correlated with having just done a bunch of rehab through the guidance of my PT team - meaning normal pain.
      Lastly, I stopped weight bearing once my doctor / surgeon advised me to and I did so at his office with him there! I also did this before working with a PT. Make sure to watch my timeline video for the fuller story on what happened and when.
      Hope that all helps!!

      @@HelloImAlexa It does help for sure. Thank you. I finally got the confidence to walk without crutches a few days ago. I didn't think I was able to walk on it, felt like so much pressure, but once you do start you feel good about it. One more thing I found over the past week...my surgery site was not swollen but both sides of my foot was. I was up so much (including driving my 1 hr commute to work each way) and not elevating in my office that the swelling would not come down. My surgeon said that icing won't really do much for that amount of swelling and that elevating higher than my heart was really the only thing that would help - that, and staying off it. But, while doing my first "gait training" PT event last week, she told me to get a "compression sock" (low compression, 8-15 mmHg). So, I bought an open-toed pair. They were "low compression" enough to be able to get it easily on and off my foot. After 2 days in the sock, my swelling was completely gone.
      It's amazing how much you learn by going thru this. This is why your videos are so valuable for people who just injured and are looking for answers. A lot of this advice will certainly make their journey much easier and provide confidence that they WILL get thru this even when at their lowest point after injury or surgery. Thank you again, Alexa!

    Hi! Thanks for posting these excellent videos. I am just completing my seventh week post-op. I have been walking in my boot without any problems whatsoever. My doctor has cleared me to wear a sneaker starting this weekend. When you transitioned to a sneaker, were there any occasions where you felt like you needed to go back to the boot? In other words, did you wean off the boot? Or did you just transition to the sneaker and that was that. Thank you so much for your insights!

Me personally I don’t feel I’m anywhere close to being able to walk without my crutches in the walking boot yet? Just ordered the shoe lift up I saw on your other video…Thank you

    • @HelloImAlexa
      @HelloImAlexa  2 роки тому

      Hey Jeremy! Ugh, I feel you, this has been such a process. When it comes to walking again, it's all about taking small steps forward - pun intended! For example, when I was still not cleared to walk on my own but I was further along in my recovery, I was able to lightly put pressure on my injured leg while using my crutches and I could start to feel what it was like for when it was time to just walk again.
      Also, also - I definitely don't recommend trying to walk or do anything weight bearing without your doctor clearing it. They will also know when you are ready and will help you when it's time. I walked with my boot for the first time in my doctors office with their guidance.
      I hope the shoe lift works well for you too! I super enjoyed using it.

    • @HelloImAlexa
      @HelloImAlexa  2 роки тому

      I wore the boot from weeks 1-7 so that's about 6 weeks total. For the first week post-op I was in a splint. My doctor advised me to wait to see a PT until after I was walking - it's important you ask your doctor what's best for you! I know some doctors recommend seeing a PT sooner than mine did; following different protocol.

    I had surgery almost a month ago. It was never ruptured. I had three large bone spurs and a lot of calcification that started to grow into the tendon where there was some minor tears. They had to remove the Achilles tendon off of the foot to saw off the bone spurs in the calcification. After 2 weeks I got put into a boot never was in a cast. When did you start walking? My doctor says it takes 6 weeks to fully attach back to the heel. I don't want to be spending all this time not walking because not weight-bearing sucks. When were you able to drive.
