@@KagemaruHitokiri I'm going to make an assumption that J read all the "red pen" edits that DM made to D's ridiculous 6 page backstory, and probably didn't like how DM was treating D. J also probably felt annoyed that DM was trying to painfully extract the most basic of back-story from J's Barbarian. I don't agree with J, but that is my best guess.

My gf had never played D&D before but wanted to try recently. Our friends who are avid players came over and we played half of a one-shot campaign. She had gotten a bit overwhelmed by all of the stats, abilities, and stuff. So I made her a separate sheet that had fun and short descriptions of what each thing did and it made a lot more sense to her. After taking a back seat through the first couple of interactions, she finally started to get into it and our DM was absolutely amazing in letting her express her character in her own way. She wound up having a really fun time and she has been asking when we will do it again. The group you play with is so crucial, everyone has to be in it for it to be fun.

It sucks, because I've seen some really interesting characters who are "greater being trapped in a mortal body". And they can be played really well.
For example, a friend played as a god of martial combat, stuck in the body of a wizard. So he had a really cool arc where he was learning how to be not immortal and have to think before fighting rather than simply charging into battle and murdering anything. In our first combat encounter, he ran in, tried to kill everything with a sword he was NOT able to use, and nearly died, teaching him a bit of humility. I really enjoyed DM'ing for that.

Okay, two quick pieces of advice for DMs,
    1. Get comfortable with adapting on the fly, never feel the need to rework/rewrite an encounter over and over to get it perfectly balanced. No such thing in dnd, and that’s okay.
    2. If you’re running a very specific game (I.e. special module, home brew theme/world etc.) be sure to have a session 0. Especially if you’re putting a lot of work into it and want certain beats of the story to line up. Make sure your players know the details and are as excited about it as you are and a session 0 is a perfect way to do that.

I would have been seriously tempted to give 'D' a loud "NO", whack him with a rolled-up newspaper, shred his 6-page "backstory", then tell him to try again. Properly. Repeat as necessary.
Tailoring things to try and get 'J' engaged in the game was not a bad idea. However, the GM also needed to allow for the possibility that 'J' just would not pick up on this and remained passive. Her being a sudden no-show was not a major shock.
Also, in any game, I feel like a DM should ALWAYS allow for the possibility that he won't get the number of Players planned for. Stuff happens. After that first failed session, I would seriously consider dropping both D & J.
I am curious though. Exactly *why* did the DM ever call 'D" his friend????

    • @Jessie_Helms

They had some promise based off my initial DM’s with them but I let everyone know when session 0 was gonna be, gave a @everyone 1 hour heads up, and even @‘d them a few minutes into it.
Once session 0 was over I just removed them from my discord server and they never said anything (not even a mad or confused DM asking why they were removed).

So they have normal abilities as a result of only being a fragment of the actual being.
So essentially being able to play off of the god Character (if you must) but still keeping them in check as a low level Character.

I'm talking about a problem player with a god complex who is actively trying to be more powerful than the rest of the party, you know... The video, and for that your suggestion sounds awful, you don't want to entertain such player's desires ingame, but you can make it the resolution of the character's story just before they die or leave for good, that way there's no godhood while everyone is playing together through the campaign, only the road to get that one character to it and all the players can participate of making that happen.
You are talking as if the player is not a problem and if that's the case there's no discussion to have really, because with a cooperating player you can make anything happen as they will be happy to compromise and respect whatever conditions the GM finds appropriate, so it's all down to the character creation.

This could be a unique way to deal with edgelords: either they realize that the game isn't about them and work with the DM to create a legitimate character that can become a cool-yet-functional edgy character that's discovering who they truly are (while giving the player one chance at redemption by making it seem like the whole edgelord angle was intentionally created by the DM for gameplay purposes), or they show their true colors and shatter any chance that the party will try to defend their actions even if they're friends with someone there.

Imagine if he tried to do something unique with the "blood sword" idea. Like, think about it: conjuring a blood out of your own blood would make you incredibly weak in the moment. But doing it REPEATEDLY as an established ability of your character would make your character gaunt and frail.
Hell, imagine communicating with the DM about the ability and actually TRYING to make it work if you really like the idea. I certainly do.
Such a character ability could lead to a great moment of tension too! The character uses standard weapons, but during a particularly difficult combat encounter, their weapon breaks, or they lose it--SOMETHING that prevents them from using it. And then they pull that ability out from nowhere (except the DM knows about it) it does some serious damage, but it turns you into a glass cannon, as taking that THAT much blood does a fuckton of damage to yourself in the process of conjuration.
That would be such a unique and awesome moment stemming from an edgy concept being pulled off in a genuinely well-thought out way.
Been listening to a lot of these DnD horror stories and have kept thinking of much better ways to pull of ideas and concepts that are edgy on the surface level.
It just sucks that problem players like these don't understand that there's very rarely a bad idea, just a bad execution.

So now, if you die it has SERIOUS impacts on the story as now the evil guys have more power to do more shenanigans. Say if you reach a high enough level (maybe level 20 or some shit or you get to a certain point of the story) you ascend back to godhood and become the old unkillable god and you hand your character over to the DM for him to use, and you write up a new character. You developed feelings towards the party, saving their lives, them saving yours, going through hardships and character development and improving as a being overall... But all as a game of pretend until you were in the right position to take back your power and rain hell over the world again! The heart break, the pain, the betrayal, and the ensuing searing hatred is palpable.
THAT is how its done. Your still respecting the DM, and adding to the setting and lore the DM laid out for you. Again, in the end, there are 2 main BBEG's in the climax. You, or the ones who wronged you. If you DIE or if YOU ASCEND, it will shape the course of the world forever. DUN DUN DUN!!!!!!!!!!

I wanna say the morning, or the day after, I went outside to play with friends- sword fighting with sticks and such, and I wanted to at least recreate the dream, and maybe add some things that made sense (before you ask- yes, I was a kid at the time) and when we got started- I got the beginning part of the dream right, however- the kid I was playing with at the time was practically annoying, I won't go into detail- but in other words: he made himself over-powered, god-like
Before the actual adventure could even begin- he "teleported" herobrine right to him, which meant the final boss had to come much sooner than expected
At the time, I didn't care- because I was a kid, but looking back now: I realize that he basically ruined that, something that is slightly upsetting- but there's no use crying over spilled milk

for my combats i just get a monster prior to the session, that matches the CR of the party, and then i kind of balance it mid combat, if its to strong i nerf it a little or to weak i buff it a little.
there are many ways to doing it even without messing with the stats

D needed to heed a certain piece of writing advice for his character:
"Is this the most interesting part of our character's life, and if not, why aren't you showing us that?"
D and J also needed to not be rude, flaky pricks, but what can you do?

The best way to weed out bad party members is to have an interview session where we don’t play; we just hammer out character concepts, backgrounds and if/why the characters know each other. The next session is the character roll session. Rule number one: don’t accept bullshit. If they can’t see reason, they don’t belong.

I have some great friends I run my campaigns with, we stream it and everything. Tons of fun, tons of laughs, and though they like to mess with me, they are always kind to me about my DMing even though I'm still learning. I've built up the skills and confidence to run what I feel are fun games, and with all the work I put into it I can't be bothered to deal with such self-indulgent players like in this story.
Also funny thing is, the character concept of being a once powerful being but now a mortal or a reincarnation sounds interesting and doable so long as it's narrative and not an excuse to be OP.

This is why when I start ANY campaign, before I even begin Session Zero I tell all of my players that,
"This game is for fun. You are NOT the main character, and this is not an anime. You do NOT have plot armor and the rule of cool does exist...but you cannot take it too far. I would rather play game with 2 people and have a great time than try to inflate it and have a shitty time. If we have problems, I will approach you. If you try to disregard or worse ignore me, you are gone."
I've held every player to this standard. Never had any problems once I grew a spine.

This is a situation where you are better testing the water first to see how reliable people are, and how much they respect they’re willing to give you. In this case, I’d pretty much scrap all of them from my contacts, but god knows why you’d want to be friends with D and J in the first place. Scrap them, do they waste another second on them, and move on with new people.

I've never played D&D because I'm the only one among my friends who is into it. However, I feel that if your character isn't flawed, it can't be as fun. It's like using cheats in a video game, which takes away the challenges and makes it boring.

do not focus a game around a new player unless you are absolutely certain they will like it. I wanted as little attention on me as possible, at least for the first few sessions while i got used to the whole thing. But attention was put on me. Even though the DM was doing it for the best reason - he really wanted to include me and wanted me to have a good time - it's what made me so uncomfortable that I didn't play again for years.
edit: To clarify, I did stay through for the whole campaign. It was after that that I stopped playing. I didnt just quit after one session or something.

    • @Rhiggins5173

OP Here. Honestly that's an interesting take. I wanted to bring her into the campaign.
When I say I prioritized them, I meant there were a few extra encounters they would have advantage over. It's not like I made them 'the Chosen One' and built the plot around them, I just made sure that they had people to fight and that they would get good loot in the first session.
Honestly even today I still think that was the right thing to do. They quit before they ever even knew I did that so while I see the point that it might overwhelm a new player, I don't think it was why they left.

It reminds me a bit of DnD session I once did irl with friends. Girlfriend of my long time friend wanted to play.
DM wanted to entertain her, get her excited, into it.
It was....meh. She found clues out of nowhere, loot dropped literaly on her head, while I, swordsman, and the dwarf, were bruised, bloody, with still the initial gear having to squeeze out the maximum potentail out of that, in order to protect the bard she was playing.
In the end, I was left in the woods, bleeding out, because after one session, when was really pissed by that aproach and dared to voice it, was encountered by full plate armor clad paladin who dueled me and the DM made him use sort of bubble, so none could intervene or help me.
I beat that paladin, had very good, very lucky rolls. But of course took hits.
But was left out anyway and the story never progressed further 😅

I'm going to start an experiment, and just think out how these weird anecdotes would work out at my table. I'm only gonna tackle the premise though.
    The Ace Fix:
I play Prowlers and Paragons, which is a superhero RPG although we don't always use it to play superheroes and we explore a lot of other settings and fiction, so it'd fit here in my opinion.
I'd honestly have no problem with him building a demonic overlord, although he still has to use the same amount of points as every other character to do so. The 8 different hells sounds like it could be a bit intimidating, but I could work with it and he'd be free to choose powers and abilities that are stronger than a typical level 3 wizard in D&D, and the other players are going to keep up with too; doesn't have enough points to buy what he wants? He can't get it.
Too powerful to ever die? That's immortality, he can buy it-although there are other ways than death to lose a character... Latent powers? We'll see how strong those are, he'll probably need them. He wants to be feared among the hells? Buy the infamy perk, and you've got yourself a deal.
The 8 Lords being pushovers? To hell with that (haha). He got exiled. If all the lords of the hells were so weak that he could beat them effortlessly, they're getting new management. All of a sudden, the hells he knows are run by different, stronger devils than he knew before... Oh, and they want to prove their reign, so *each* Hell is sending infernal soldiers after the PC. I'd allow him to take the 'Wanted' Flaw, which gives him a point of resolve in P&P, because I'm definitely using that as a plot hook to hunt his player character down.
And the devils definitely know of a way around his supposed immortality, perhaps they want to seal him away... perhaps they want to bind him and use him to power some kind of infernal magic mechanism for the rest of his days, making use of that powerful latent power he talked about. Perhaps they want to crush his mind and leave him but a feeble vessel, nothing more than animalistic in thought wandering the hells like a domesticated pet... or they wish to control him as a vessel of their own, using him as a mindless soldier. Many possibilities, I think each hell would want different things; whoever captures him first gets to do what they want.
In any case, for D&D-the answer is hell no. I feel there's enough flexibility in P&P to do something like this and have it come up as a subplot, maybe a main plot for some sessions here and there as the conflict boils over, but it could be a fun premise to work with. The ultimate failing though is still the player, who even if he got his premise to play out, still would manage to blow the session for everyone.

I had one of those player for years, same self insert, worse was when he blinded his NPC gf to spite the bbeg and in a fantasy / lite steam punk world outta nowhere he said the his dad was a nuclear scientist working in a powerplant and mother God tier witch. No prompts just dropped it, I stupidly allowed it in my own way , and the bbeg being undermined him. Took it out on his family paid a lawless party rouge to destroy the powerplant critical wounding the dad and at there wedding him and gf rouge leaked location and it became a red wedding, lead to a fun game of fleeing as a player he didn't learn and the campaign end a year later when schedules didn't work, we no longer play with them they became abusive irl after that

I've heard it said that when someone wants to write their character as a big, already all-powerful demon lord type (which is certainly what "lord of all the hells" sounds like), they're essentially beginning their story at the end. Nowhere to go, nothing to learn, no goals to meet, they just want to kind of _exist_ as the most awesome being they can think of with none of the legwork to earn that status.

    • @Grigeral
      @Grigeral 5 місяців тому +1

I've done it before, kind of... I had a Tiefling called Kortharagoz who was previously a Pit Fiend serving as a mighty general in the Nine Hells. However, he tried to usurp the Archdevil of the layer and failed. As a curse, he was sent to the mortal realm to 'learn his place' with some semblance of mortality. He wouldn't ever actually 'die', but be reborn anywhere up to a century after his death. Each death would bring him back a little weaker than before, until he was a shadow of his former self.
He started off as an obscenely powerful individual in a mortal shell, but ripe with pure arrogance of being superior, resulting in many deaths at the hands of mortals, until at the start of the game, he was as weak as an ordinary tiefling and, being thousands of years later, his data on the Nine Hells was out-of-date.
Essentially, his backstory was a 'Curious Case of Benjamin Button' sort of affair now I think about it lol.
