I have two WA19 mics. Its the only mic I've found that got me close to that woody, percussive acoustic guitar sound you hear on many 60s records (eg think Mrs Robinson). Its one of my fave mics on guitar speakers. I used the two on different speaker types to get a mild stereo sound. And you can also create a really nice soft pingpong effect with one at the neck of an acoustic and one at the bridge, delaying the bridge by a few hundred milliseconds, just pan it slightly.
I got this WA19, 4 of them like a month ago, and its been absolutely amazing mic to use on, EVERYTHING. I got the 4 ready at all time here in the studio. Great review!!!
The one really salient point that I think is made abundantly clear in this video, a point that I think Warren has also made on other occasions, is that, it's not the gear of the engineer that makes the difference in the quality of a recording, it's the engineer of the gear that's really matters. It's wonderfull to have all these recreations of really great gear but it really comes down to the skill of the people using that gear that will really make an impact in the quality of our recordings. Hat's off to all that were a part of this video!
Such a great mic...I got one a couple months ago and i use it more as a drum overhead now instead of my Lauten Audio condenser. I love the way dynamics round off the transients, and this one has such a wide frequency response. Don't forget about the built in 80hz hi pass filter it has!😁
Wow, the WA19 sounds incredible - such a refreshing change from the usual options! I really like it. And the Gretsch... what a beautiful guitar. Thank you so much for the video, Warren.
An amazingly helpful video: I came here for the WA19, and left with a fantastic overview of how to better an original song that I'm working on. It has FAB vibe, and few other errant mersey-stuff bits. No copying for me, but this video helps my home recording enormously. Thanks Warren!
I have no idea how an original D19 did sound then or sounds today (as microphones do age) but I am really happy with the WA19. I use it mainly as a snare bottom mic.
I have arguments with people (friends) that seem to still believe that if you buy vinyl it is analogue and thus has no compression. Surely compression was invented to get the transfer of sound into the groove of a record ? And Tape and vinyl impart compression too?
You try and tell these new vinyl junkies and they say you are a liar . I am a musician and a constant student and I understand the science and mechanics of these things but that makes me some kind of weird muso that is not in touch with the real world.
@@mellotronin54 all of my old school '70s engineer and producer friends said they were always disappointed with how EQ and compression had to be applied to their mixes when mastering for vinyl
I learn so much watching these videos, and id seen the Ringo 3-mic setup and always wondered what it was. Now i know! Thanks for sharing! I'm a big fan of simple drum micing.
Really like the vocalist. Nice to hear his voice shining through while still being faithful to the original. In this day and age of everyone having the potential for being recognized for the unique qualities they bring to the world - so many resort to trying to sound like everyone else. The Billie Holiday approach to vocals over the past 20 years is so tiresome and a great example of a style being overused (across genres too!). It is a perfect time for people to embrace the qualities that make them unique and start singing in their own voice! This singer featured in the video seems to have that quality. Refreshing.
Love this video ! That mic sounds great . I'm buying a bunch and using it on everything . Its a surprisingly bright mic . Personally in this digital world I only use dynamics and ribbons . It helps to smooth out the digital . I'm a fan of the 60s and 70s recordings . Dynamics help get you that sound .
I like the nicely simple & direct feel to this... of course, for that true authentic 1960’s production feel, Warren should be wearing a white lab coat. I wonder if there were discussions/arguments at Abbey Road back then, with folks wanting to use ‘vintage’ mics from the 1920/30s (for that classic 5k to 300hz vibe). Personally, I’ve never 'tried' not to be clever either... not being so just comes naturally.
MOSRITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!👍 BTW - My first guitar (bought by my parents for me in 1969) was the same Sears/Danelectro as on the wall (at 3:57). It came with the small amplifier and speaker built into the guitar case. 🤘
Great job on the song, sounds excellent. I watched a video on da Y00t00b where a guy had a couple of the original D19's and did a straight compare of those to the WA19s on different sources. The WA19s definitely sound different than originals he has, but they still cool very useable mics for multiple sources. I'm gonna get a couple at some point. Thanks Warren!
It's amazing in the studio, on everything indeed. But I've tried it out as a live mic, but unfortunately I couldn't keep it from feedbacking constantly.. tried everything, but it just wasn't usable live (especially the floor monitors feedback horribly). Switched back to my trustworthy SM58 and AKG D7 and all the feedback was gone... any tips for using the WA-19 for live vocals?
@Producelikeapro yes, true! But I know they used the original D19 also live, so I hoped the same for the Warm Audio WA-19. Amazing job on your recording, it's amazing! Big Beatles fan here! Thanks Warren!
@Producelikeapro yes, live through a PA... couldn't get the monitors from feedbacking on stage. I guess these days live sound is also a lot louder, of course. But it's all good, it's still a fantastic, affordable mic to record almost everything you throw at it! Thanks for replying, Warren. I appreciate that!
Very cool video! Appreciate the observation about how in fact the early 60s Beatles recordings utilised a ton of compression. I was listening to With the Beatles the other day and I noticed just how much the vocals are slammed with compression. Sounds great though obviously :D
@@Producelikeapro In my rush I really should have said that I think the entire production is really quite authentic and sounds great, played great, etc - but those backing vox just took me out of the moment.
