I feel like I was a sleeper, until I started reading again. Now my whole world has opened up, especially since reading McCarthy. He has open my eyes to many pieces of literature that I'd usually have no interest in. Also thanks to you! Love your channel
He probably meant Melville's 'South Seas' narratives: "Typee" (1846) and "Omoo" (1847) They were both based on the author's experiences in the South Pacific.
I've heard this talk of BM being made into a film for years and how "no one could to it" and blah blah. Well, there is a Chilean film that came out last year by a relatively new director called "The Settlers" that convinced me that BM could be made into a film. The tone and narrative of the Settlers felt very similar to Blood Meridian to me. It was violent though nothing close to the carnage of BM, nothing near as complex either, however it captured the sense of dread that runs through the book and the feeling of being at the edges of the earth and the gates of hell. I have read BM three times and i suggest people watch this film. I'm also curious if anyone agrees with me.
I really loved The Road A LOT, but I've heard the villain in Blood Meridian is kind of cartoony, so I kind of need a push to read it. I've been wanting to read for quite some time
That’s just not true. That probably came from someone who never read it but hates it because edge lords have gotten into it because of the violence and Judge Holden. It’s a fantastic book.
3:08 Not gonna lie, I first got into McCarthy because of the violence, but his works are so rich that it got me to expand my interests. Blood Meridian in particular got me interested in nature and philosophy. Great video.
Yea, same, heard of Blood Meridian as a disturbing and bloody book, only when you read it do you begin to see that disturbing and bloody are the last things I would describe that book as, even if they’re true.
I don’t think it’s the gore that makes blood meridian a difficult adaptation. I think it’s the plot, or lack thereof. Who wants to watch a group of guys riding around from town to town killing people and peeling scalps for 2+ hours? Maybe I would, but certainly not a mainstream audience. And studios don’t want to fork over big budgets on projects likely to lose money. Besides, it’s the LANGUAGE that makes blood meridian such a great book. But language/prose can’t be shown on screen
Reading Blood Meridian, I'm left with the impression the blood lust and disrespect for life that was present in the novel and at that time in the Wild West, can be seen in modern USA. The right to bare arms, the disrespect for others or other people's misfortune, the disrespect for life "thank you for your service" murdering indigenous peoples across the globe, from buring families alive in vietnam to the genocide of innocent palestinians, to the uncaring ignoring of climate change and the suffering it will cause to so many. It's a lack of society in the face of wild animal independance. Elon Musk, and others they are independant and self serving, it goes on. The Wild USA
You say @5:50 that "there is no positive arc", "there is no real main character", "there is no interiority". I agree it is hard to find. But all those things are there. It is a positive story. These things are so camouflaged though which is what makes the book great. McCarthy himself says as you quote, "there is not a lot of good guys" that doesn't mean, NO good guys.
You say you won’t give your kid a phone. Lmfao you just wait until you’re tired and old and every kid but yours has one and you say that then. Easy to say it as a young guy with zero kids. Eaaaaassssyyyyyy
Melville's "Bartleby" has only 36 pages...astounding when you think of Moby Dick. Blood Meridan was written with little puctuation, which made it a difficult read, but Mesmerising, nonetheless.
I don’t think he’d ever agree to do it because ultimately Blood Meridian’s message is violence and evil have always been a part of humanity and always will be…the judge never sleeps and just fiddles and dances for eternity. And as violent as his movies often are it is always to show a battle between good and evil with lots of messaging about faith in God etc…But I think Martin Scorsese could possibly make the movie better than anyone. Or at least I think there was a time when he would have been the best choice. Also though I can’t think of his name at the moment I think that possibly the guy that directed The Revenant could do it some justice. Ultimately though, though I hate to be pessimistic, I don’t think anyone can transfer the book to film perfectly. I don’t think it’s possible. And it’s not only because of the violence. It’s because the thing that makes Blood Meridian magical is the writing in and of itself. The writing itself is a violent character. I don’t think you can really transfer the biblically poetic descriptions of the prose to film via shots of the desert and rocks for example. And I also think that as amazing as reading the judges monologue’s are on paper I worry that in film an actor saying those long passages just wouldn’t come off right. I think it could easily become tiresome and somewhat cheesy because nobody on earth talks that way. So if you have to tone down the impact of the violence, you can’t transfer the descriptions to film properly, and the monologues won’t work as written, then what do you have left of Blood Meridan? It has no real plot and the only character with an ounce of decency gets raped and murdered at the end. That’s not to say they can’t make a good film. But I don’t think it’s possibly to make an accurate transfer of the genius of the novel like they did for say Lonesome Dove. But believe me when I say that I will love to eat crow and be proven wrong.

“He wrote those south serial master when he was fairly young-“ Not 100% on the first half, but I’d bet a cookie the last part is “was a real master when he was fairly young.” “He wrote so much, he was a real master” spoken quickly? Or it really could be something about the sea. Redburn is awesome and Melville was pretty young when he wrote it.

Blood Meridian would work so well in an animated adaptation
Tbh, you're right. I can't envision it live action.
That, or even a dramatic reading accompanied by art, I don’t even know how you’d visually represent some of the passages in that book.
@@Stopitpls I think animated just with voiceover narration of the most beautiful passages.
Blood Meridian is my favorite book, but whenever I read it, I’m usually left with the impression of, “Thank God I am NOT a part of this…”
I believe McCarthy was referring to Melville’s Typee & Omoo books which took place in the South Seas.
Exactly right.
Robert eggers would kill it at a film adaption
He probably meant Melville's 'South Seas' narratives: "Typee" (1846) and "Omoo" (1847)
They were both based on the author's experiences in the South Pacific.
I think P.T. Anderson and his team from There Will be Blood could possibly turn B.M. into a great movie.
Absolutely agreed!
either them or the Coen Brothers!
This channel is a hidden treasure
I’m on chapter 7 and whew. The descriptions are graphic but I’m enjoying it so far!

Bro I did NOT want to be in blood meridian. Also, just go to Liberia or the Congo if you wanna see the real last frontier.

recently finished the novel, perfect timing!!

I think serial just refers to works being released in shorter pieces, or short stories in magazines. Usually hear it in reference to Dickens.
You can add to the pubble. Its ok
Blood Meridian as an anime would be like Berserk in the west.

i do not have the feeling that I want to be apart of blood meridian in any sense lol.
Desiring unfiltered evil is not on my bingo list.
I think thats the diference between comarc and dostoievski. The entire work of dostoievski is exactly what dostoievski tought about life.
Are you going to cover Robert Coover’s work at all? I think he’d land for you big time. Universal Baseball Association is a masterpiece.

Naw bro. I know plenty of people who have kids without phones. I will not be a weak parent.
Did you ever read Guimarães Rosa, an brazilian writer. He remembers me something of mccarthy

Cormac McCarthy wasn't a recluse! He just really didn't like *YOU.*

2:21 That's what I thought
These are all fighting words.
The movie format is too condensed to adapt a novel. I'd rather see an 8-10 episode series
Second
What the hell are you talking about?
You read blood meridian and wanted to be part of it?
I think you're extrapolating way too much from that broken quote
Disappointing. Thought McCarthy would be speaking.
Sorry! Just traveled across the country to Texas and transcribed the worst-sounding audio you could ever imagine to provide you this information 😂
