Groucho Marx and Jack Lemmon: Two class acts, all the way.
I am a big fan of the Marx Brothers, and I got to say, when Groucho said "I wish Chico and Harpo could be here" I choked up.
StormSage13 Yeah that was sweet, it was really neat seeing him take a few beats while taking it all in, you could almost see the lifetime of memories being reviewed as he spoke about his beautiful brothers and family.
So did I
It brought tears to my eyes as well. Long shall the Marx Brothers shine. I love them all.

@@denniskwahl Chico, Harpo, and Margaret Dumont was watching from heaven
Two years earlier (1972), a friend and saw his last one man show at Carnegie Hall. He was incredible. He aged so much in those two years. After Chico’s funeral, a reporter asked Groucho, “How do you feel about your brother’s death?” to which he snapped, “Not as bad as he does.” I sure miss them and grateful for clips like this.
And with genuine affection, Jack gives him a kiss on the cheek. What a beautiful moment.
I watched a Night at the Opera today, and this evening smoked a cigar. The whole time I couldn't stop thinking of Groucho. What a man, what a legend. RIP
I like to think of him as "Schnorrer"
I still get teary every time I watch this clip. The Marx Brothers gave so much joy to the world. Thank you Chico, Harpo, Groucho and Zeppo (and Gummo for his work behind his brothers). :-)
Groucho told of the time the Archbishop said to him, "I want to thank you for all the joy you put in the world." Grouch replied: "And I want to thank you for all the joy you've taken out of it." This was in his Carnegie Hall concert album. Unfortunately, I loaned it to a co-worker and never got it back.
2:09 so touching that he acknowledged his "leading lady", the great Margaret Dumont
She's the archetype for every snooty old rich lady that ever lived.
Groucho once said she was like the sixth honorary Marx brother
The irony was she got all of the jokes but she was such a good actress she didn't let it show during the scenes. It's said she went to a revival of Coconuts (the Marx Brothers earliest films were originally performed onstage) and witnesses say she laughed at all of them.
The applause should have lasted the entire night. What a gift to the world Groucho was...
Yes Charlie Chaplin got a 10 Ovation ❤️
@@Mickcotton I could easily understand why Groucho was considered- still considered- outrageously funny. I just never got Chaplin.
@@Mickcotton 13 mins
He stole mustach from Chaplin.
@@Mickcotton Greatest ovation!
Groucho was 84 years old when he got this honor. His body may have been slowing but his mind was razor sharp.
agreed
Why'd they wait so long?
dylkan I like the way you put that.
dylan plantenga He still does have immortality.
@@rackinfrackin i have a guess, Louis B. Mayer. one of the founders of MGM Studios had it out for Groucho specifically. After His death in 1957, Mayer wouldn't have much influence. But by that point Groucho was more well known for "You Bet Your Life". The late 60's thru the 70's saw a huge resurgence of interest in his films. By the time the Academy gave him the award, it was likely because they knew they were running out of time. Since he was 83 & a well known cigar smoker from the age of sixteen.. they probably thought if they didn't do it then they wouldn't get another chance.. after all it took them until 2 years prior to this to give Chaplin one.
One of Oscars Greatest moments and the most deserved award ever.
Tunnel ,NY Lite Groucho should have won an oscar(s) for his work during the 1930s. This 'legacy' award they gave him was nothing more than a bunch of pretentious shit.
true enough but the stuffed shirts of the 1930's would never admit that grouchos work would always be appreciated. this award proves otherwise.
Tysons Accosta True and all the folks that worked with him were pretty much dead by this time. Still, better something than nothing.
"I came to stay but just the same I must be going." - Groucho I see TCM is advertising a restored "Horsefeathers". Hope they run it on their channel, besides the theaters they are running it in.
Tysons Accosta True, but back then the Academy was still finding its way in how and who to nominate. If you gave an Oscar just to Groucho, was this a slight to Harpo or Chico for their contributions?
Me and my girlfriend are 22 and we love The Marx Brothers. It proves that quality work never truly gets old.
My daughter is 23. She has loved the Marx Brothers since she’s a little girl.
Bravo 👏 👏 👏 👏
if it wasnt for my pop buying the dvd boxset of the marx brothers id never know how talented and wonderful these guys were and are
Since i was 20 i enjoy Marx brothers.
About to be 20 in a few days, and I’ve loved the Marx Brothers since I was a little kid. Something so special about their humor that’s forever timeless. I wish that I could have seen them when they were in their prime, and have been able to meet them. They all seemed like such wonderful human beings.
my god what a body of work he gave to the world. i loved him so much. wherever you are Groucho, we still love, adore and appreciate you.
Grouchy wanted to study medicine, his older brother Chico said to him, "Think of all the lives you saved by not becoming a doctor"!!
Chico had great lines. His wife caught him kissing another woman, when confronted he said " I was whispering in her mouth."
And people think Chico was not the funny one who was the funniest 1
Can't stop laughing!
Yeah! You're right, I was there!
Jay Rosen Swordfish!
what a well spoken introduction, you never hear an introduction like that these days at award shows, they always read from cards or prompters and they never sound good. This was perfectly executed...
Andy Capp still sounds amazing though
Slick Trademarc: It was excellent but it was memorized by Jack Lemon. It was not spontaneous.
I was thinking the same thing while listening to Lemon. He delivered it well.
Back when dialogue meant something.
That's because Jack Lemmon was one of the most genuine gentlemen who ever graced the film industry with his grace, humor and charm.
Groucho's son Arthur has said that Harpo's funeral was the only time he ever saw his father cry. Harpo's death was huge blow to the family from which they never really recovered.
I think he was crying at this Oscar moment.
Harpo was the gentlest and sweetest of the quartet
@@jillkjv3816😊
@@emmalancaster2013
Well in all honesty, Harpo was also a bit of a rascal.
But sweet and gentle nonetheless.
a gentle genius that deserved more than 3 minutes at the oscars...very tearful ..it was a end of an era that will never be repeated.
So true! 👍
He probably DID get more than 3 minutes, but copyright bs led them to cut the film part of the thing. Notice the abrupt cut to the award being presented?
@@ajk
Yes, I remember this particular Oscar broadcast and they did feature a roll of Marx brothers clips.
Splendid introduction and respect from Jack Lemmon to one of the best, Groucho!! And at least Groucho lived 3 more years. He died in 77, a tough year 😔 for so many celebrities.
Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley and last but by no least Doris Smith of 3 The Cuttings.....
@@simontaylor2319 Plus Charlie Chaplin, Gummo Marx, Guy Lombardo, Fredie Prinze, Ronnie Van Zandt, Maria Callas, Joan Crawford, Marc Bolan, Andy Devine, Zero Mostel, and Erroll Garner to name a few.
@@pgh45rpms Maria Callas too!
My dad is a movie lover, and so even as only a 30 year old guy I grew up on the Marx Brothers movies. I hardly ever cry, but I started to tear up a bit when he said he wished Chico, Hapro and Margaret Dumont could be there.
R.I.P Groucho, we miss you. At least we get to enjoy your jokes through youtube. I was feeling down and your jokes picked me up and made me feel alive again. It took them this long to give them an Oscar? they really deserved much more earlier.
Great to see they were honoured. Groucho was a big influence on me when I was young (8yrs+) I developed a quick wit based on watching their films and Groucho's performances. Helped me deal with bullies at school most of the time and make the girls laugh too. Would have loved to have met him. I'm 45 now and still watch their films.
Greatest Comedian Ever. Period
Better than bob hope
John Lennon Jr cantinflas better
Nearly all comedians have stated that Groucho was either an inspiration to them, or that they utilized many aspects of his style. His impact on others (including the names others mentioned like Hope, Cantinflas, Carlin, and Lange) can't be measured. All of modern comedy has roots in Groucho Marx and the humor he and his brothers created in their movies.
Reds1921 - Carlin claimed that Groucho was his inspiration. When someone like Groucho inspires entire generations of comedians it is easy to call him the greatest comedian who ever lived. There isn't a comedian alive who hasn't learned from or been inspired by Groucho.
So many have NO IDEA how much impact he had on them. It's so pathetic how many think standup began with Louis C.K., or George Carlin.
R.I.P. Groucho Marx (1890-1977)
Chico: “The garbage man is here!”
Groucho: “Tell ‘em we don’t want any.”
@Kendra Martin Don’t respond to anything I post ever again you absolute melt.
Watch Duck Soup. No vulgar language, just great talent, fun & entertainment.
Considering the film came out in 1933, it was vulgar for the time.
And remember, we're fighting for this woman's honor, which is more than she ever did.
@@julianbufarull7602 ; Not so vulgar that it didn't get past the stringent MPAA censorship code. Research before posting. Even Groucho would have been appalled at most of the out-and-out pornography being marketed as entertainment today
@@b.deville3236 I don't know, it sounded kind of vulgar to me considering it was the 30s. Some sex innuendos, jokes about the family unit, war mockery, presidential mockery, etc. Not many dared to make those jokes back then I assume, and I haven't seen it in other films except maybe for Chaplin.
I love all of them but you're right Duck Soup was great. It was an anti war movie and I think we need to show the younger generations these great movies. Thanks for your comment.
It's a great honor to see this, even in youtube. I loved the Marx Bros. and it's a shame that the Academy waited so long to give them an award. RIP to the greatest comedians of all time (Groucho, Harpo, Chico, even Zeppo).
Jack Lemmon and Groucho Marx! Two legends! Time gone by!
Pure class from start to finish. "Hey, you big bully, quit pickin' on that little bully!"
" For without her we wouldn't have been anything." Such power. wonderful :')
So true. I have read a few books written by Groucho, and he never fails to mention how much Mini, meant to he and his brother's success and happy lives.

Jack Lemon and Groucho Marx. Two comedic giants who are both greatly missed.
Jack was dramatic actor w comedy instinct
Jack Lemmon won the award for best actor that year for "Save the Tiger".
Also the year that Tatum O'Neil won her Oscar. The youngest actor to ever win.
Two greats up there, one presenting, the other accepting. Thank you to both of them for all the great memories.
In that moment when he's walking off stage, clutching that Oscar while that song play's. You can see he feels like a young man again.
The best of the best. The Marx Brothers' comedic timing was second to none. They portrayed American humor at its best. Who among us can take their place?
Nobody can!
The Three Stooges' timing was up there as well.
Whatever it is, I'm against it!
Erin Fleming helped take care of him in his final years, as detailed in the Stephen Stoliar book (soon to be movie) Raised Eyebrows. Groucho in '72 said a priest bumped into him in Rome and he dropped his cigar. Groucho said, "Jesus Christ!" The priest smiled, gave him 2 cigars and said, "Groucho, you just said the secret word".
+Bob Nelson :-)))))
That was my always my favorite Groucho story.
Erin Fleming was a controlling witch who forced an octagenrian Groucho
to perform publicly when he should have been resting at home.
Known today as ELDER ABUSE.
Groucho's 3 kids had to sue to get her away from Groucho
(and Groucho's remaining finances).
Fleming deservedly died an obscure pauper.
Bob Nelson Groucho tells of meeting another priest who, upon realizing who he was, said “Gee, my mom’s crazy about you” to which Groucho replied “I didn’t know you guys had mothers” LOL
She was a cad, a bounder and a fink!
The greatest at delivering one-liners and had the sharpest wit ... is also the man genuinely humbled by the accolades showered upon him. There will never be another Groucho.
Look at that Crowd of well Dressed nice people. No it will NEVER happen that way again. Groucho, what a GREAT funny guy.
sd g WOW, Thanks Man. You really straightened me out, Sheesh
Go away Troll. Cyber Bullies are not welcome here.
God bless Groucho! It’s amazing that Marx Brothers movies can still make you laugh and laugh and laugh some more after 80 years. Great comedy is always timeless.
When I watch their movies it’s nonstop laughs.
So very sad to watch the sun setting on so wonderful a mind, but how lucky we are to have his antics at his peak preserved to adore for all time.
There is a distinction between humorists and comedians, and Groucho was as much a humorist as he was a comedian. He saw the absurdity of life, and in his brilliance, served up life's humor on the finest silver platter for all to experience. There will never be another like him. Rest in peace, Groucho. You earned in so beautifully!
I still suspect to this day that Margaret Dumont was playing him when she asked what everyone was laughing at. Maybe it never occured to Groucho, but it might have been himself who didn't get her joke.
Duck Soup should have won the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director.
My favorite movie
Very touching indeed....... A fine wit, we could do with more like him. A most wonderful performer. X
I watched the Academy Awards every year growing up, even though I saw few of the movies being honored. I remember this honorary Oscar in '74. Was nice to see Groucho one more time. The movies, You Bet Your Life, the Dean Martin roasts, What's My Line and even his cameo on an episode of I Dream of Jeannie... Never will forget this amazing man.
God how I miss him. Thank you Groucho and your equally amazing brothers.
When they said, “The one, the only, GROUCHO!”, how true that was.. There was more talent in his mustache than in most all the so called ‘comics’ who have come along since. Groucho was a brilliant comic star. There won’t be another like him. He and his brothers created something that went beyond everything done before or since. They brought so much joy and laughter to the world. They made us love them... And I love them to this very day. All you have to do is look at them and you find yourself smiling. That’s love.. We should all surely be grateful that their act has been preserved there on film for all time.
That wink from Paul Newman at 1:39
+wintersnowman some lady got lucky that night for sure.
+wintersnowman Good eye, that was great
+wintersnowman Yes
Well spotted.
Without question, the greatest comic genius ever. I was just talking about Groucho over lunch with a friend today. Chico and Harpo were such great musicians as well as being funny. The likes we will never see again....
Grousho was a good musician too, he played the guitar, piano and other instruments and they say sang with perfect pitch.
Simply the best - so many laughs and so much joy they brought, and still bring to the world!
Thank you boys
He and his brothers took the stage and film and turned it over on it's head and we are forever indebted to them.
We'll never see another comic as great as he was.
Love the man, love the tux he was wearing. What a singular wit he had. Too bad we don't have more like him today
You bet your life was on when i was a kid and feel in love with Groucho and then as a teenager discovered all the Marx brothers movies and Groucho's wit.Seeing this and anything of Groucho now my eyes get all teared up.
The all time comedy legend the one the only Groucho. One of the all time greatest! His legacy lives on. You bet your life his legacy lives on.
What a life he had, I just finished the first part of his autobiography, and that's enough to say he has been living a priceless life!
Marjory What autobigraphy?
jack lemmon just adored groucho...he was 83 years young here..a honor well deserved..all have passed on including more than half the audience
This clip is what I have wanted to watch for the past 20 years.
Thank you,Oscars!
The music! "Hooray for Captain Spaulding!"
And the memory of Maggie Dumont!

It's sad to see this honor come so late in this life. It's wonderful seeing him come to life at about 2.25 and seeing that sparkle in his eye. A genius. Thanks for the mamaries, Groucho.
Rufus T Firefly. I like the Captain Spaulding music at the end.
Awww makes me cry rip Lemon and Groucho

Margaret Dumont said to Groucho "my dear husband is dead.He died in my arms" to which Groucho replied "oh so it was murder".My favorite line from the many brilliant ones from this guy and his brothers.
One of my comedy heroes and still is....I just hope the academy doesn't give an award like this to the likes of Adam Sandler and Rob Schneider..
Agreed!
"You're a brave man. Go and break through the lines. And remember, while you're out there risking your life and limb through shot and shell, we'll be in be in here thinking what a sucker you are." (Duck Soup)
"Don't point that beard at me! It might go off!" (A Day at the Races)
"Well, here we are flying in the air. What a stupid remark that is." (A Night in Casablanca)
"They sent for me and the case was solved immediately: I confessed." (Love Happy)
What more needs to be said???
'I had a lovely evening...but it wasn't this one...'
After one of his jokes bombed, "Here's another one you may not care for".

An Incredibly talented wit. RIP Groucho
Absolutely beautiful! Two amazing talents.
Fantastic UA-cam find! LOVE Groucho and The Marx Brothers. I’ve made sure to pass down their great contributions to my kids who still enjoy their films today.
Only Gummo, Groucho and Zeppo still with us at the time...
My beloved hero. I, too, wish the academy had gotten around to this earlier- it would have really been something to have all of the brothers there. Groucho was obviously moved by the honor. It really gets me.
The most anarchistic comedy mind of all time. Monty Python is like a breeze to the storm of him. I miss him like crazy.
Groucho was the finest ad lib comic that ever lived! It is so sad that his death was three days after Elvis Presley, so he was an afterthought in the 1977 media. It's sad that "The King of Rock and Roll" was a bigger news than the true "King Of Comedy" to the point that it wound up being a short side note that Elvis died. Fuck Elvis!!! He didn't write ANY of the songs that he sang, and made AWFUL movies. Groucho was the real deal! He said what he felt, and there hasn't been a comedian that was as talented as him since! RIP Groucho.
Wow, classy. Maybe you've since grown up.
I also remember when Groucho died and I expected there would be more about him but they were still going on about that sick drug addict Elvis.
I loved all the Marx brothers and Groucho showed class by mentioning Margaret Dumont. Hard to believe how old they would all be now. Groucho would be 130.
A lot of people, including Dick Cavett, wondered the same thing at the time: Patiently waiting for larger media tributes that never came because of the focus on Elvis. I think Cavett eventually put together a one-hour special tribute by himself.
Shame on the Oscar Academy that it took so many years til they gave an Oscar to the Marx Bros.
And for Mel Brooks is about time now.
Mel Brooks got one in 1969. not honorary tho
The first 5 proper Marx Brothers movies were remastered and released on blu-ray. Beautiful work. We can hope the rest may one day see the HD light.
One episode of "What's My Line" was when a couple told Marx that they have 12 children and Marx said, "Why so many?" "Well, we love kids"...Marx: "Well, I love my cigars too but I know when to take it out...."
At least try not to butcher it. It's "Well, I love my wife", "Well, I love my cigar, but I take it out of my mouth once in a while"
Actually his show was “You Bet Your Life”. But if you like “ what’s my line “ check out when Groucho destroyed the show! The mystery guest was Claudette Colbert. The I love my cigar line may be urban legend. I hope it happened but there is no record of it.
This was on the episode of “you bet your life“ that aired the same night as the episode of “leave it to beaver“ in which June said “Ward, you were a little rough on the beaver last night.“
Duck Soup is a movie that made me love The Marx Brothers. I wish they were all there as well to be honored with Groucho.
Such an amazing person. Still looks like the same old Groucho
A great man one of my faves off all time Groucho was a legend.
We love you Groucho you should have gotten an Oscar years ago you brought laughter to everyone.
A bow for Zeppo, ,Margaret and even Gummo. But most of all thank you Minne & Sam Marx
Yeah, let us not forget Gummo was their manager. He did so much behind the curtain for his brothers.
My all time favourite comedian. For me personally, Duck Soup is the best American film I've ever seen and I'm old! Groucho was definitely the GOAT. Not forgetting of course, Harpo,Chico and sometimes Zeppo.
When I was in grad school in the 1960s, one of my professors recommended Duck Soup as Groucho's finest. Yep, it's a masterpiece.
He was my fave comedian along with Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy to me three best ever i so loved Marx Brothers Groucho was such a great man.
groucho should have been an Oscar host!
Love it Groucho was a legend - sad to see him there though x
Groucho Marx and the Marx Brothers are my favorite comedians. They actually performed live in person and on stage in my hometown of Superior, Wisconsin back in 1913 before they became movie stars.
Without doubt, one of the greats in cinematic comedy.
Duck Soup is my all time favourite.
Grochos old shows are better than anything today.
Great man. I love the story about his son borrowing the car only if he arrived home by - I think - 10pm. His son was a couple of hrs late and turned off the motor and coasted down the driveway. He crept out of the car and quietly closed the door. As he approached the house Groucho popped his head out the window and said, in that typical Groucho way, "I heard that..." :-) Fondly remembered.
he was unique on tv . super cool dude
Oh what joy these men, Groucho, have left with us.
I am in awe of Groucho's Marx's intellect, charm, communicative skills, and humor!
What a beautiful human being.
Priceless. Bless you Groucho for all those taught.
He mentions Erin Fleming at the end. You can look her up. This actress worked for Groucho and they ended up in a relationship, but took advantage of him, eventually ending up with nothing. A sad end to Groucho's life.
Best humor in history. Groucho is the best
First off, a flawless introduction by Jack Lemmon. The Marx Brothers are a favorite comedy troupe for me. Yes, I choked up when Groucho wished Chico and Harpo could be present, but even more so with his mention of Margaret Dumont. She was fabulous. Those two together on screen had chemistry.
Another plus to these movies? For as early as they were made, they pioneered busting up prejudice in that they showcased enormous talents from all ethnicities.
Without a doubt, the greatest comedian of the 20th Century.
Chaplin, Keaton, Laurel and Hardy and some others were superb artists and very funny, but Groucho's ad libbing and quick spontaneous wit puts him over the top.
The first time Groucho makes me cry.
Back when a standing ovation meant something.
Two of my favs: Marx and Lemmon. (Just realized that was funny.) Got to spend some quality time with both when I worked in L.A. in '74-'75. Cigars there were. Listening to Grocho's running commentary on people passing (especially the attractive women) were about the funniest moments I've spent. He was sharp as a a tack. I met Grocho indirectly through Jack.
Great to see this clip. I was 16 when this award was given to Groucho and I remember watching it live. I was then and still am a huge Marx Bros fan, having been introduced to their films by my Dad. The funniest joke from this presentation was not included in this clip. At one point, Groucho looks at the Oscar and wonders out loud if he could hock it.
