  • Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) was a British philosopher, logician, mathematician, historian, and social critic. At various points in his life he considered himself a liberal, a socialist, and a pacifist, but he also admitted that he had never been any of these in any profound sense. He was born in Monmouthshire, into one of the most prominent aristocratic families in Britain. Interviewer: John Freeman.

A marvellous interview . A man who spoke with both Gladstone and Lenin and still has wit and humour . Absolutely brilliant .

Outstanding. What a fine piece of footage. The interviewer asked some interesting questions . . . however, it's the interviewee who makes the interview and Lord Russell was excellent.

Ive just binged all of Bertrand's Interviews by now and throughout all of it the interviewer always ask about him being labeled as a 'moral pacifist' this gives me an impression that during this time its seen as a negative connotation. because of the need for him to explain his case. If that's the case, it so wild to think how the people back then think of war as a necessary evil.

Because war means profit for people who are guided by other standards than what you and I would consider moral or even human. I guess...

I agree with you, however back then, I think, war was mostly regarded as a last resort when reason and dialogue failed to contain "evil". Now, war is a tool of crude domination and theft. I may be wrong of course, it may always have been.

I wonder how much "money" Vlad the Impaler, alias Putin, has spent on destruction- I have the "luxury" of being, a moral pacifist too- I recently saw 2 photos which enraged me: an 11yr old girl with stumps- she was "profit" for whoever bombed her home- he or she now has the girl's lower legs and feet, the other photo, was of a woman in her 20's or 30's- the daughter of the warmonger- tucked up safely in an historic manor house I suppose- an underground bunker? Doubtful as The Ukraine hasn't made enough profit yet to "fight back"- all the news that's fit to print....yada, yada, yada....What would the kindly, brilliant, Professor Russell reply- he was never speechless was he- or foul-mouthed as I can be, most un-lady-like- I am trying to picture him being stuffed into a paddy wagon with other "peaceniks", dissidents, annoying disruptive, assumed to be, unemployed ( never mind your philosophy and engineering professors are present too- disrupting the sensible commerce of a sensible street on a sensible day in a sensible, most civilized city, country...Namaste

pacifism is antiwar in a general sense isn't it?... so those that dont have the wisdom or this philosophy in their behaviour are the best to have been expended. but the promoting of pacifism in the years when he was soldier age seems most sensible particularly considering the circumstances as opposed to merely being canon fodder, trying to instill the idea that no one should be cannon fodder is more needed dont you think. war for political differences shouldn't be something so accepted that those that speak out against it and take an stand become seen as the ones harmful to an ideology

In summary - there’s no need to shout your comment displaying your disgust for a group of people that don’t share your viewpoint. Think you’ve missed the point of what Bertrand Russell is talking about. If you want to summarize anything from the above video then it should be - hatred is foolish and love is wise. Tolerance of each other in the long term is the only way we don’t destroy each other considering the types of weapons we have developed and will develop in the future. However judging by your comment tolerance isn’t what your about…

What kind of tolerance does the USA show or has ever shown towards other countries and cultures ?
The USA is the global standard for international oppression, and War mongering.
War, terrorism, and nuclear destruction, Enslavement of others nations by debt, cultural propaganda, enforcing outrageous scandalous global policies, setting standards in injustice, fraud, oppression, to mention a few examples, the native American genocide, world wars 1&2, nuclear bombing of Japan, the cold war, the war against Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria. Removing the gold standard of the U.S dollar, otherwise known as the Nixon shock.
