Just done the RacingLine strut to mine - the original bonnet stay does interfere with it, as I didn't remove mine to start with and the bonnet wouldn't close properly.
too few mentions of this online, but I found out that the manual strut was due to the active bonnet system. With a gas strut, bonnet cannot lift. Hence the 5 euro ncap stars. So no, these are far from simple cost cutting measures. Why nobody mentions that in the reviews???

Thanks Derek, there is a strut kit out there but not AFAIK from Racingline. The ones I've come across seem keen to smack the bonnet into the windscreen so overassisted are they!
Oh deal, well if worst comes to worst they can be painted one colour and maybe be diamond cut on the faces but it's the polished areas on the side of the spokes that are super special and that's the bit that refurbers struggle with.
I actually prefer those wheels to the Vossen ones (they are nice, but quite "fussy" & reminiscent of a Ford Focus wheel!). I'm suprised that a). You're not just putting the Richmond wheels on for the Winter - thinking you're keeping then in good condition for when you move your GTi Clubsport on & b). Why All Season, rather than proper Winter tyres? I've got Nokian WD4 winter tyres on my R & they work well (although look hideous on 17" Dijons - even worse than your R Estate did🤣). I suppose location is the thing - I'm in the North of Scotland & we do get some heavy snow on the high routes (such as the A9/A82, etc). As for the bonnet strut? Best mod ever - I'm going to get one for my Dad when his Mk 8 Style estate eventually arrives!
Hi Andrew, yes I know the Focus wheel you mean but ultimately both are inspired by the classic BBS wheels which GTIs have a big association with. The Richmonds are so unappealing I really don't want to use them at all but as I can't get all season tyres in 19s they have a purpose. I made a video on Goodyear's all season tyres and it was a revelation, you lose very little of a summer tyre but get performance in snow close to a full winter. I think I said in that video that Winters still make sense for people who live in remote areas but for the average driver who doesn't get a thrill from exploiting a car's dry grip on a regular basis, all seasons do it all.
@@volkswizard great points - the BBS wheels are, indeed, classic (I remember the BBS wheels on the Mk2 GTi well). Full winters do me (I've had a few hairy trips through the snow when I worked in the Central Belt, where I got the full use of them) but, funnily enough, my Dad gets by in the winter on All Season tyres. I guess, unless you're experiencing snow, All Season tyres make sense. I've always thought that cars in the UK should be sold with All Season tyres as standard (think Germany, for example, has legislation that requires tyres suitable for winter are used during the winter months), I don't know how many times I've seen cars sliding about on unsuitable tyres!

Stick some VW caps on and they look OEM+.
Those who know will know anyway 👍🏻
Definitely prefer new wheels do they do strut kit for up gti
Thanks Derek, there is a strut kit out there but not AFAIK from Racingline. The ones I've come across seem keen to smack the bonnet into the windscreen so overassisted are they!
Racing Line FTW!
Nice wheels
Looks good 👍
Thanks Al 👍
Which supplier did you get the strut from?
Learnt the hard way when I kerbed my Vossen. Not a single wheel refurb company would go near them! So new wheel it was 🤬
Oh deal, well if worst comes to worst they can be painted one colour and maybe be diamond cut on the faces but it's the polished areas on the side of the spokes that are super special and that's the bit that refurbers struggle with.
They look much better then the other wheels!! Vw main dealer have always been a rip off
I actually prefer those wheels to the Vossen ones (they are nice, but quite "fussy" & reminiscent of a Ford Focus wheel!).
Great Mod thank you.
You're welcome David 👍
