I’m my revision guide it said enzymes don’t take part in the reaction themselves but then later on it says how enzymes hydrolyse the bonds to break it down but isn’t that taking part in the reaction?
Enzymes aren’t considered reactants because they don’t change after a reaction. Instead, they provide a place called an active site for the reaction to take place. The enzyme allows its substrate (the reactants) to bind to its active site, which lowers the activation energy (the energy needed for the reaction to start) by positioning the reactants so the ends that will bond are close together or by stressing some bonds in the reactant so they will break more easily. Basically, you can think of an enzyme like a baker. They’re the ones that put all the ingredients together, but they don’t end up in the cake themselves, so we don’t call them part of the reaction.
