- Official audio for the Melodians' UK chart hit from 1970, 'Sweet Sensation'
Originally formed in the Greenwich Town area of Kingston, Jamaica, in 1963, by friends Tony Brevett, Brent Dowe and Trevor McNaughton, the Melodians were firmly established as one of Jamaica's leading acts by the close of the decade, having enjoyed major success with singles for Coxson Dodd, Duke Reid, Sonia Pottinger as well as the artist co-operative Links Records.
Their move to Leslie Kong's Beverley's Records in 1969 resulted in further major triumphs, including this, their sole UK chart success. Strangely, it is one of their subsequent singles for Kong, 'Rivers of Babylon', for which they are best known, despite the single never charting outside of their native Jamaica.
'Sweet Sensation' has since been recorded by numerous acts, notably UB40, who included a version on their best-selling 1983 LP, 'Labour Of Love'.

Yes the Caribbean Front Room, my friend's parents had theirs under lock and key so no chance of ever getting in there so she used to come over to mines (during the long summer holidays). The Blue Spot Gram, drinks trolley in the corner or the bar with obligatory pineapple ice cooler and Babycham/Wedding glasses - Lawd mi god, those were the days!

One of the high spots of my life was, when delivering goods to find I was actually at Trojan Records. Thank you for the tunes that helped a young man grow in the turbulent 60's.

I was one of those original London skinheads, I remember running out to get the barnet cropped, we had two styles, our jeans and dr Martins, and our classy, mohair trousers, white/red socks, loathers and crombies, we had class, style and a lot of fun around the pubs and clubs of London. Great days

Yes , I too wore those Dr. Martins , the chequererd shirts , the braces ,,,and the hats too...but I was not a Skinhead ....just hung out with them and played soccer with them on the Common . This was in the Crystal Palace area of London in 1970 .

I first came across this track listening to UB40's "Labour of Love". Embarrasingly, it was many years before I realized that this wonderful album was actually an album of covers!!! But I've had a lot of fun listening to the originals courtesy of UA-cam. Including this one by the Melodians, which is simply exquisite.
Can’t stand UB40 because pretty much everything they ever recorded was a cover version of beautiful songs like this that they totally destroyed with their own musical style and that droning voice of Ali Campbell completely ruining it.
