Picked one up today as a 30th birthday present to myself. My first old world! Very excited!
@@TomsBigSpiders thanks, Tom! Huge fan of the podcast by the way! I listen every week. I've been in for about a year now and without a ton of time to watch videos, it's been instrumental in helping me feel at home in the hobby. You're awesome! And thank you!
"2015" What? I thought it was new but I guess not I guess I haven't watched it so.....I did. Thanks, Tom for all you do to keep UA-camrs happy if that's even possible lol
LOL knows to close the lid as soon as she looks at him. Beautiful Tarantula.
Hey Tom, thanks for this video. This is my first Tarantula and I want to give it it's best life.
Any chance on an updated care video?
I'm so glad this was helpful. Here are a couple more current ones.

5:55... I currently feed my slings every 2 days. My GBB is the size of my pinkie nail, I want to toughen her up as soon as possible. Same with my T. albopilosus. She's a teeny-tiny sling. My G. pulchra, well she just likes to eat. I figure that, they've been around for millions of years, they'll instinctively know if, or if not to eat. I don't know why I default to "her/she", I just do. Wishful thinking maybe ? haha
Sounds good to me! hahaha The only issue I've found with aggressive feeding schedules is that you can end up with really long premolt periods.
Thats a beauty!!! ....i have 3 slings one is a baboon tarantura and having a hard time with thier names...still learning.. videos like yours is a great help...more vids please
Thanks so much, Roel! I'm working on an update video for this species right now. It's one of my all time favorites. They are just stunning!
i stay away from baboon or anything aggressive but man, i want one of these...BEAUTIFUL!!!
+immortally insane I was just saying that this species has quickly become one of my favorites. So far, both my sling and young female have been quite well-behaved overall....

lucky you, i only saw 1 breeder in Canada that has some for $300. if only i could afford them at the moment. as soon i first saw your video, i fell in love with the colors, it's mindblowing
I eyed this one for a while. When I saw my first one, they were selling upwards of $500! I watched the price go further and further down, and finally I splurged. I usually do not spend that much on a T, but a breeder had a sexed female on sale for about $220. I jumped on it, and am sooo glad I did. I was worried about paying that much for a spider, but I'm definitely happy with the purchase.

that is awesome, hell of a deal. i'll wait until the price goes down a bit more. i never paid more than $50 for my spiders and i tried to keep it that way but the temptation is still there, i watch your video like 5 times now...i'm still blown away with the colors

what a beautiful species! do you know if they can be kept in communal setups like m. balfouri?
I had heard that could, but I had a hard time finding any information on it. A communal of these guys would be a dream setup for me! :)
Hey Tom! So.. I have an opportunity to breed my (hopefully) mature female H pulchripes with someone who lives in the same town as I do, and he’s willing to take the sac and raise it himself! I’m super excited about it, but... I have no experience with breeding and after scouring arachnoboards for a while and am still not confident. Any experience or advice?
Hello, Elizabeth! Will you guys be doing the pairing together? If so, allow the male to approach the female in her enclosure. Be on standby with paint brushes to separate them should she want a post-coital meal. I did not pair my male myself, but a buddy of mine did with his female. and they were pretty gentle. Let me know how it goes!
I was given a sling for my birthday. Wasnt very active only ate 2 crickets in 3 weeks, and then it died. I didnt have a heated room set up and living in the uk during the autumn im thinking it wasnt warm enough. Unfortunately some stores sell these creatures without giving any advice and are just interested in the money. And i sadly didnt know enough about them. The crickets are doing realy well though.
Hello! What were the temps there? Yeah, it's the same in the states with the pet stores. They are just trying to make money, and most don't bother to tell you how to care for them.
Wish we could keep these T's in South Africa but unfortunately they are illegal to keep with out a Permit. it is such an awesome looking Baboon. thanks for all the info keep it comming
+Gareth Van Heerden Thanks so much! Oh, I was just talking with someone else from South Africa who was telling me that you couldn't keep certain species. Ugh. I'm assuming the permits are difficult to obtain?
some people in the hobby here in SA like to make trouble for others so it is just safer to not keep the illegal one than stand a change to loose all you Tarantulas if you do get busted
I have 2 slings at the moment, one burrows and has a little network of tunnels going and doesn't web very much, the other shows no interest in burrowing and just webs everything up.
i"ve been told that some burrow tarantulas will stay out in the open due to it not feeling threatened.
She is definitely a beauty! :~)
i just bought a sling. the owner said he bought it in jan 3/4-1in. now 4 months later its 2.5in. does the growth rate sound male,he fed once a week but bigger meals. vent looks female but thats not for sure. he also said he tried to sex it, thought he seen something but it was still to small. i pray its female. how fast has ur sling grown
It sounds pretty similar to the growth rate of my sling...maybe a little faster. What temps was he keeping it at? I got my sling at the end of the summer, so it only got about a month of warm temps before things cooled off a bit in my house. Now that it's warmed back up, I'm expecting it to pick up a bit in the growth department. My sling started off at about 1" or so in late August and is now about 3".
room temps maybe abit hotter. do u know the sex of the smaller one u have?
I mean, if he kept it warmer, that could lead to faster growth. Hmmmm. I can try to get a ventral shot of my female for you to compare.
its ok dont worry. i bought the sling, the owner refunded me the money cause someone offered him more money. which was a shitty move. thanks tho tom. channel is growing good
What will u do when all of the moisture at the bottom evaporate away?
Sorry, I just saw this. These guys actually do great on dry substrate, so I've let the moisture completely evaporate. She's doing great!
I originally found these spiders and through someone I know they were introduced to the trade. they're generally not aggresive
And now we need to fight to keep them away from the prowling eyes of collectors and protect them at all cost. And you didn't found them. They were already being described in 1901 by Pocock
Thete are no downside feeding slings heavily. Quite the opposit! There have been research in this area you can tell the people that says otherwise. A well fed sling will grow larger and healthier as an adult. Ut is when they are large juveniles and adukts you should feed more seldom
Hello! I did an article a few years ago about the "power feeding" myth with slings, and agree completely. My goal is to get them out of the more fragile sling stage as quickly as possible.
Whats the maximum size that they reach? thanks :)
How large was it? I've talked to a couple of folks that say theirs are about 5" or so, and one that said about 6". That would be amazing if they grew larger than that!
Gawgeous!
+Tom Moran I think its trying to intimidate any would be predators with its flashy blue legs is the reason why its flattening itself up like that. Pretty cool defense behavior, am guessing they do that in the wild as their first line of defense if discovered by a predator, then biting as their second line of defense if the flashy blue leg intimidation method didn't work lol
I just found one in a fuckin pet store, kept in BRIGHT LIGHT 24-7... I grabbed it and it was only 49.99 they didn’t even know the name of the species, they had it labeled as a golden legged baboon... I got lucky, as did the T
Nice grab, Brooke! UGH. I will NEVER understand how places that sell animals can be so terrible when it comes to their care. It's disgusting.
Tom Moran I couldn’t believe they didn’t even know the species, one even better is the girl goes to get the T outta the tank and I said, do you have a pair of tongs? U might not want to put your hand in there, it’s an African tarantula a and their Venom is pretty potent. Her response was, spiders have venom!!!! I was no longer good after that, I said u do realize that EVER spider uses venom, she had no idea.... I was truly amazed that day of how truly uneducated people are, sad 😢
when i say originally i mean years after they were described by science but the first with an interest in keeping spiders for a hobby
i just got an OBT, i really like these ones though :)
I LOVE my OBT, so I had to have one of these. The contrast of the gold/orange body and blue legs is just so cool. What size is your OBT? :)
now i have antilles pinktoe, suntiger, obt, and brazilian blue dwarf(gbb jr). next is the gooty! handpicking good t's to add to my colelction.
I love this kind of baboon i want to get one but its to hard to find here i only owned one kind of it and its a obt 😍
Good, leave them alone. They are now a protected specie because of people like you
@Dick Biggles Why the fuck are you commenting on something from a year ago?
Wow. Very, very expensive species. Iv'd seen these guys go for $400 in some websites.
They should be finally making their way down. When I first was eyeing them, slings were going for $450. There was NO way I was paying that! I've now seen them listed as low as $100 in the states for slings. It's still pricey, but they are getting more affordable.
They are hovering around 100 bucks right now from what I've seen, if you keep your eye out you can find them for less though sometimes. I paid 75 for mine as 1" slings which was acceptable to me.
Talk faster lol
What's a sling?
+Seymour Butts Great question! It's short for "spiderling". It's a baby spider.
I'm no glad these are cheaper now, I finally was able to buy one today for only $75. :)
That's not bad at all, David! When I first got mine years ago, slings were selling for up to $200. It was bonkers.
