@@russthompson9080 Which show? An idiot abroad season 1-3, and the moaning of life are loosely scripted and high level of production. So definitely scripted, checked and approved before final production by standards and practices, etc. And I agree it’s not all improv by any means.
But Karl is a real person, a bit smarter than they put on but definitely very ignorant about lots of things. And I’m sure he knows how funny he is. But his personality is real, the way he reacts to things and the bizarre opinions he forms are real. Even though they play them up for the show. His interactions with people are real and generally unscripted. It would be impossible to fully script that from a production standpoint. But he had a producer with him close at hand all throughout the series guiding the interactions and activities for sure.
It wouldn’t matter to what extent it was scripted or not, because that’s how all good content is produced. It’s all about the end product which is a good laugh and a funny insight into the world through Karl’s eyes.
I also liked their podcast “The Ricky Gervais Show.” Which is essentially just Ricky being the cheeky smug narcissist that he is, Karl doing his bit, and Steve being sort of the middle man. Really funny chemistry. And Ricky is sort of playing a devils advocate narcissistic character of himself the same way Karl plays up certain things but it’s all for the comedy. And also loosely scripted. I figured that most people understand how that works in the U.K. too.

"Sort" was used in many ways. I started seeing an older English man at 23 and he told me off and at the end, he said "right, sorted." Lmao, I was like "um..." but he had already walked away. Anyway, I always understood the humor but what you explain is another thing cause we can skip that and still get the joke but idioms and phrases are definitely different. When I Visited the U.S.S.R. In the mid ‘80’s, we rode the finest train in the Soviet Union, the Red Star Express. It was nice, but it smelled like urine in most of it. The toilets used no water. You went potty, hit a lever, and a trap door opened underneath the train, splattering the contents all over the tracks beneath. Fascinating!

Russians, what do they know about sauna? It's supposed to be fresh birch leaves. It increases the heat, but Karl is on the floor level which is weird. You sit high up and use the birch branches on yourself. The leaves are soft when fresh and wet. It doesn't hurt, just gets really hot.

Mongolian wrestling is the reason Mongolians have been dominating Sumo in Japan for years now. Hakuho and now Terunofuji are both Yokzuna. Another Mongolian Yokozuna just retired, Kakuryu.

WOW, this entire trip is actually something that checks a large chunk of my bucket list off. Taking the Trans Siberian railway, going to Star City, getting in a centrifuge AND a zero g flight?!? Screw you Karl lol

I like how he compares space to a place on Earth as if it's not an endless wonder of exploration. Like it's just a set boring location that would only take a few years to get bored of.
