Jabroni is a good way to put it. Doesn't help that Spawn isn't a character, but yeah, Frank's just not interested in this bullshit. He'll take the check, that's about it.
Big time on McFarlane, I think he just assumed he'd come up with something. Miller I want to give more credit to... he did still have That Yellow Bastard and 300 after this, although that's not a lot, and there ain't much else.
@@teambloodforce the much needed injection of direction was issue 9, the warrior Angels who all those soldiers in issue 8 are pitted against. God only knows where McFarlane would have taken it.
@@ridenar1456 Yeah, those and I think the Grant Morrison issues- from what I can tell most of the plot of the last thirty years has been derived from those 3 things.
I bought this book new when it came out, god getting old, but yea i can remember being super disappointed in it, hell azrael was batman at the time so you can imagine my excitement to aee this, unfortunately i think it was just too early, spawn had almost no background to work with
Yeah, but in terms of sales it was right on time- if they'd tried this even a couple of years later comics was not making anywhere near the amount of money it was in 1994, and money I think is the only real motivator behind this.
I bought the two parter 'Batman vs Grendel'. That was a bit minimalist too. (to be clear, the followup with 'Batman and Grendel Prime' WAS NOT minimalist, Prime brings the thunder.) This whole McFarlane experiment looks a bit like his run on Spiderman.
It's still got a bit of that look left, but if you compare it directly he was going way harder on Spider-Man. This is like the last days of Todd drawing anything, ever.
Great vid! Blood Force team up! This was one I always wanted to get my hands on, but never did. Doesn't look like I missed out on anything though. I expected a better looking Batman. It looks like he drew Spawn in the pencils, and then changed it to Batman in the inks. Batman even has the pointy Spawn cape shoulder pads in the first few pages, and through most of the comic. And that double spread with them looks awkward, like Spawn is ridding bitch on the Batcycle, haha.
No, it's really not worth hunting down. Batman/ Judge Dredd is by far the superior book, and should be checked out by everyone. The weird Batman cape is pretty similar to how Todd was drawing him when he had that stint on Batman in the late 80s, I think the only change he made was to give him the shorter ears, sort of a nod to Frank. And yeah, there's no shots here that look particularly great; a lot of drawing on some, but for not much of a purpose.
holy shit man does the other guy like anything?🤣🤣I agree tho the comic is written bad and batman says punk 78 times for some reason but the art is decent has some amazing shots.Nice review tho!!
Well, we've all got those books that made us tap out on something- I didn't realize this was that book for him. I can see it too, given how hyped this thing was at the time, but given that I was never a huge McFarlane fan in the first place it just never seemed like that big of a deal to me.
@@teambloodforce oh i understand im not from the us and i got into comics late 2000s so i wasnt around the hype but mcfarlane and miller writting this stuff must have been something. They are both 2 of my favs especially millers earlier work but i get how this book is a turn off for so many people.I just thought it was funny how he doesnt like capullo the killing joke mcfarnale etc nothing against the guy everybody has opinions.Glad i found this channel tho man i like ur reviews something like kayfabe now that ed is gone!
Thanks, man! I focus a lot more on 90s junk, less on the artsy stuff, but I dig how many people just want to hang out and listen to people talk about comics, it's good stuff.
I didn't even know this came out honestly. And Frank Miller wrote this? Does that mean that Frank also did breakdowns / storytelling or did Todd do most of that cause Frank's storytelling was some of the best IMO. Todd's not so much! :D
This is the comic that makes everyone misremember how Spawn got the shoelace stitching. It's infuriating.
Well... this is the one that led to the shoelace, and then they retconned it so it wasn't Batman.
I remember reading this and you can tell Frankie Poo didn't give a shit about Spawn, and wrote him as a Jabroni.
Jabroni is a good way to put it. Doesn't help that Spawn isn't a character, but yeah, Frank's just not interested in this bullshit. He'll take the check, that's about it.
Greetings 🙏 from Raleigh, North Carolina 😅🎉❤
This is where you accept McFarlane had no plan for Spawn after the first 4 issues. Miller was working on fumes.

Hi guys. I picked this book up at the comic store in the 90s when it came out 😊 really nice review fellas. Have a good one
Thanks, man!
Did he say Neil Diamond? 3:30 lol Great video keep them coming
It's what happens when you never watch an interview with the guy, we always assumed Guy-min instead of Gay-min. Cheers, bud.

Take a drink every time Todd forgets if Spawn is wearing his mask or not from page to page.
Only if it's water, I have no desire to destroy my liver thank you! :D
If I can make the zombie head look cool I'll do that, if not I'll go mask. The kids don't care anyway.

I don't think there's much of a chance Frank touched any layouts on this- I don't think he gave much of a shit, he wasn't that kind of invested.
