    as for the arrogance, which I have seen in many circles= pens, knives, watches- I have only happiness for anyone who is happy with what they have. I do not care about the cost of whatever makes them happy, only that they are happy. But I SALUTE you for acknowledging past mistakes and letting yourself grow more beautiful in your heart. Bless you.❤

    My prayers go out to you, to Micka and Limon and Micka's family. I understand what you all are going through, especially the pain. In February my 38 year old daughter was killed in a diving accident despite that fact that she was a divemaster. Totally unexpectedly. Life is short. Life is precious. Focus on your loved ones. Praying for you all.

    Many people who are now dedicated fountain pen users, started out with a couple of favorite ballpoints or gel pens. They've always realized the value of having a good pen close to hand; usually for work related use; and then they start looking farther afield and considering other writing options. Everyone starts somewhere.

    Thank you for sharing your friends, sending light and love. When we love people, it is so hard to see them in these circumstances. They seem like people who I would love to hang with. Now on to your question: Even if I may not show arrogance with others, sometimes in my head I think things that make me an asshole as well. It is all the process of living life, right? We catch ourselves in the mirror and think, I don't want to be that ass, and we change! I am grateful for those moments. So many don't seem to have them nor want to change. I have been known to go back to someone even years later to apologize because it has bothered me so much. It has always made us closer when I do. Sometimes I feel judged in the fountain pen community because I am SO happy with my TWSBI pens, they always write like Buttah! and I love to do my sketching with them. I am never without one. They are great price points as well. I am not into fountain pens for status symbols and feel like others may turn their noses up to me, or it could just be my own insecurities. I fell hard for fountain pens as a little kid when we only had cheap calligraphy pens! Having inky fingers after drawing with those was the best times I had. When TWSBI came on the scene I was SO happy to use them in my art all over again! Which lead me this year to branching out to nib grinds, just got 3 new nib grinds to try...it is an exciting rabbit hole!

    Hi Roy! I'm very sorry to hear about Micka. She sounds like quite a lady.
    As for arrogance, yeah I'm guilty of it too. I think for me it's my disdain for ballpoints showing, and my inability sometimes to see that the other person might be pretty happy with their pen. It's hard for me to fathom. Crazy thing is I think ballpoints have a place, and I even own some. I just don't like them.
    Anyway, another great show. Thanks!

    I often feel that buying the trendy pen at the moment leads to the initial, "it's okay.....but, " What I do experience is coming back to the pen as I work through my rotation is more of a "wow! This is a great pen...why am I not using this more?" This has happened with the Lamy 2000...getting used to hooded nib was part of that. The "sweet spot" is a myth, using a hooded nib is a bit awkward simply because you can't see the nib as well and you don't always hold it correctly (like a Safar forces you to), but once you figure it out and appreciate the craftmenship, I totally agree with the hype (though I wish I got a fine nib). But I've always had this experience with a Pilot Varsity. I think only the MB 146 really made me think WOW...but I will say, that WOW really comes from the right paper. Cheap paper and you think...really?

    Arrogance is manifest in so many different circumstances and communities. I love things that are hand crafted and have some engineering elements that can only be achieved by knowledge, experience and imagination. When I see an artist at work, I see greatness. Fountain pens, especially the more expensive ones, are often works of art. But so are the much less expensive ones that have been designed and made well. Watch enthusiasts are more likely to come across as arrogant, but I contend that what comes off as arrogant can often be attributed to the deep affection people have with their ‘objects’. If we can appreciate craft and function and express this as enthusiasm, the better we can all be, and the more inclusive. Let’s enjoy the experiences and let’s not get carried away.

    I tend to do it in an odd but self enjoying manner. I wait till fountain pen people shit all over Chinese or Indian fountain pen products, which they usually seem to be quite entrenched in their opinions about. I then pop their balloon with the proverbial safety pin by informing them just how many of their beloved fountain pen brands that they consider superior to other products come out of some of the very same factories , yet “their brand” will have a 500% markup or more . These pens / products are just spun with some sparkling and glittering shit sandwich of marketing to convince consumers of their supposed superiority and or luxury. ( very much abusing people’s fear of FOMO, with a nice slick dose of the inexpensive marketing by using influencers ) While I love the revitalization of the industry, it irritates me the absolutely huge amount of obfuscation, fleecing and smoke and mirrors it has brought about. Most of which won’t stand the test of time when the chips fall as the focus tends to be quick profit over longevity or providing a truly innovative and or unique product.

    The problem of too many options you're talking about is choice paralysis. Interestingly, motorcycles had this problem, then rectified it, now have it again. I don't know why, but there seem to just be cycles in niche industries of doing this.

    The Lamy 2000 is a pen that pleases my mind but not my heart. I can only write with it for a day or two, and then I reach for another pen. The Kaweco Sport is another popular pen that fails to stay in my pocket longer than a day. Rather than arrogant, I think I'm more of a snob with fountain pens, or is snobbery another way to describe arrogance?

    Thankfully I haven't exhibited such arrogance. Basically I wrote with ballpoints and rollerballs most of my life. I enjoyed them tremendously. My hunt for them was finding the perfect refill for them. I would not criticize anyone for using a pen that is not a fountain pen. Conversely my family has questioned me for using a fountain pen! Now there is arrogance!!

      That’s an aspect I feel contributes to my jock like arrogance. It’s not a justification at all. But I definitely feel it was an unintended defense mechanism.

    48:33...
    *FOUNTAIN PEN ARROGANCE*
    Arrogant is an adjective for describing people who are too proud and look down on others, like supermodels who think their good looks give them a right to do whatever they want.
    Arrogant derives from Latin arrogare "to claim," and the idea is that someone is claiming credit or advantages that they are not entitled to.
    Arrogant people also like to talk about themselves. A lot. They brag about their achievements, skills and abilities, and often ignore those around them. In meetings, for example, arrogant people generally seek the spotlight.

    • @PenBoyRoy
      @PenBoyRoy  8 місяців тому +2

      Definitely sounds like you’re describing me, even if you weren’t. I think that’s why it was important for me to look into a mirror and identify it and do something about it.

    It's super common in any enthusiast sphere. In addition to fountain pens, I also am in watch collector circles, and the elitism is common over there as well. I think it stems from people's need to be part of a group, and coming up with dialects and nomenclature that identify and separate themselves from those "not in the group". And you end up increasingly making smaller and smaller groups cutting more and more folks out.

    • @PenBoyRoy
      @PenBoyRoy  8 місяців тому +2

      Yes. And this diminishing size of the groups is what I don’t want to do. Inadvertently or otherwise.

  • @KenchanKrafts

    My highly acclaimed pens that don’t do it for me are pilot custom 823 and Lamy 2000. Everyone loves them, they are great, but I think my personal preferences make them not it for me, not that they aren’t great, they are definitely great, but like you, there’s just pens in the same range that I love more. I like color and uniqueness. But a lot of people do like and prefer practicality, sleekness and glassy smooth writing - and those two pens check these 3 boxes very well. But these qualities aren’t always or necessarily at the top of my list when it comes to pens I enjoy writing with at the same price level. I really hope I haven’t been arrogant to others for what they like, and tell them they shouldn’t like what they like, but I know that I’ve become arrogant towards ballpoints at times but only in a joking way with my fountain pen friends and not towards/at ball point and roller ball lovers. My one creeping arrogant behavior I know is loving and only buying more expensive pens at this point. Also Klarissa is the best ❤❤❤

    • @PenBoyRoy
      @PenBoyRoy  8 місяців тому +2

      You bring up a good point that has me thinking. I was arrogant in a snobby joking way. But what I’m now pondering because of your comment, is the fact that it’s joking make it better? Or is it one of those things where it’s a joke but with some intent somewhere hidden in it? Now I have to think more… and you know I don’t like to do that. It makes my brain tired.

    Touching episode Roy.
    Regarding arrogance… Looking inwards, my arrogance has probably been more within the FP users. As someone familiar with design work, I know creative processes can be expensive and time consuming. Because of this, I may have at times been overly critical towards affordable pens heavily inspired by popular brands. I still do not support such practices myself but I could have considered it an easier gateway for people not yet deeply embedded into the lifestyle.
    Looking outwards, I may have witnessed issues of old fashioned fp fanatics from Korea. It was a couple years ago now but I wrote to you via email and I was happy you read it on the podcast. I think the influx of the younger fp users has been slowly diluting the arrogance I had previously witnessed.
    Lastly, when it comes to specific pens getting hype, I felt somewhat like you when I got my pilot custom 823. I love it to bits now but I think I acquired it too soon into my journey. I was thinking it was the end-game grail and that it would be better to get it asap. I remember feeling a little empty afterwards. It was and still is a great pen but it is not life changing. It has also grown on me more and more cementing it as my best and favorite. A grail pen I grew to appreciate more with time, I suppose. I now am one of the people who sings praise of it but I think it is important for people to spring for highly praised pens once they have the capacity to fully appreciate the experience.

    Fountain pens will not dissappear. It has a clear advantage to ballpoints and rollerballs. You feel less pain when writing. To a lot of people, it's a clear improvement in life quality.
    I'm gonna sound like a heretic. I still use ballpoint pens and mechanical pencils. I don't really bother to convert anyone to being a fountain pen users. I don't even let my friends use my fountain pens.
    The only reason why I use fountain pen is because I feel less pain when writing with it. That's it. I'm not using it because it's romantic or it's beautiful work of art. It's a tool.
    Another heretical statement, there are ballpoint pens that write as smooth as fountain pens. What a shocker, but it's the truth. Anything Schneider with 755 XB refills like Schneider Slider and Schneider Epsilon. That's the only ballpoint pen that I don't feel any hand pain.
    I went to my first pen meet. I talked with a nibmeister. He's not a purist. He said that if I'm bother with feathering, just use a ballpoint. Then I let him use my Schneider Slider Rave XB. He's so impressed to the point that he said it's better than Japanese ballpoints and would even consider to buy that ballpoint pen.
    Also, Brian Goulet still uses rollerball pens. He also doesn't even bother to force everyone to love using fountain pens. Everyone has different wants and needs.
    Fountain pen community has mob mentality. That's why using other writing instruments is considered heretical and a hot take.

    Writing is a very personal activity, whilst YT is a platform that rewards the extroverted. All arrogant fountain pen collectors can brag about is the # or $$$ of their pens, they never a genuine, profound thought or idea, nor produce acclaimed literature. I can throw down vitriol, to them but if they are content with their ways, how am I to judge.

  • @TheRacerRich

    You should redirect your fountain pen arrogance - not this pen is made by this company which means its super cheap, but oh you know what's cool is this pen is made by this company so you can mix and match parts to make your favorite color scheme. Also, whenever you feel a need to argue, remember these words of Thomas Jefferson: "when I hear another express an opinion, which is not mine, I say to myself, he has a right to his opinion, as I to mine; why should I question it. his error does me no injury, and shall I become a Don Quisoet to bring all men by force of argument to one opinion? if a fact be mistated, it is probable he is gratified by a belief of it, & I have no right to deprive him of the gratification. if he wants information he will ask it, & then I will give it in measured terms; but if he still believes his own story, & shews a desire to dispute the fact with me, I hear him & say nothing. it is his affair not mine, if he prefers error.
