Just did this fix today, used this vid as a guide, thanks. A few notes from my experience: - needed a better jack to lift the car from the center - had to find a 24mm socket in order to use that steering tool - the steering tool plug wouldn't sit flush due to that rubber when taking the top cap off so had to hold it in place with my hand. - it was torqued down flush on my car and very dirty! - i've retorqued it to down to a mm showing. - lining up the thrust piece with a mirror (best just remember it's orientation on pulling out). The steering rack no longer clangs going over pot holes or bumps on the drivers side, the steering is slightly more stiff, feels connected to the car and less vibrations at motorway speeds. Hi Jacob. I did this repair and over tightened. Had to slacken off after a drive to get the wheel to return to centre by itself. Now I have a power steering fault saying something along the lines of ‘increased steering effort’, do you have any idea how to remove this fault please? Thanks!
I'd imagine the racks motor shut off when it had to use more torque to assist, probably just a case of turning it off and on again. Maybe clear the codes at most!

And when I wanted to steer it spun over the gears So that my steering wheel was turned to the right and wheels not After that I did the same thing backwards to bring everything In original position but now I get fault codes that the steering’s belt is not correct
Why is everyone doing this from under the car? Unless you have access to a garage ramp It's much quicker to do from above the engine bay (at least it was on my 320d). Air filter unit off and there plenty access, bonus is you can fit the new one and have a drive to check the steering before fitting the airbox back on

I'm convinced it is this but got loads of people trying to convince me it is a ball joint or something on the suspension but I'm adamant it isn't as I have changed parts down there and know everything is fine lol.
Actually think its possible it has an electric rack on the late e90s... have to have a look and see. Should fairly obvious, if it has a steering fluid reservoir ect
I have a 2016 F20 LCI, too much play in the center of the steering and running highway, the center point is sensitive. Have done this repair, sensitive center point is definitely gone. Center of the steering is 80% gone. The rest 20%, I assume is related to non-run flat tyre which is softer.

What are the other parts for cvboots?
Hi I have had mine fixed it my steering now seems heavier and different. The steering does not feel as light as before any ideas ?
@steveo2009100 probably wants slacking off slightly, but only part of a turn!
Do you have a link to the adapter tool on eBay?
Can you put. Link or name of the tool you used please thanks a lot
Search on ebay 'bmw steering rack tool'
Great video no faff, thank you!
Excellent review
What other grease can I use?
I'd just get the bmw stuff... although it looks and feels very much like standard grease!
@@flyro2000 what knocking did this fix solve I have a bmw 320d sport 2012 61 plate. And over road humps and small holes it’s ok but going over a little bigger pot holes I get a horrible knocking sound.
I am looking for a kit like this for my e85 z4. Zero luck until now
thanks for the vidio i have done the same to mine the knocking disappeared but now the steering is tight and doesn’t return any ideias?
Look in the comments. You tighten it too much.
Did you have knocking over pot holes
do you have S02VL Variable sport steering option on your car?
Mine isn't optioned with variable speed steering but the kit worked fine
just had this replaced but now my steering is way too tight and wont self center. any idea? thanks
Needs loosing a bit. I just had mine done today and it felt like I had no power steering. It’s now ok, but the knocking noise on mine is exactly the same 😫
Hi ! Is it ok now ? I also replaced mine today and i have my steering tight and wont self center . How much do i have to drive it untill it comes back ?
do you think this kit would fit X3 F25
Year 2017 ?
Pretty sure it does mate, all bmws of this era use the same electronic rack

Hi mate
Where you based in England.. Are you able to do mines if I pay you. I can’t seem to find anyone who can do it for me.. thanks let me know
I'm pontefract area mate, yeah dm me on instagram @_jacob_lowe 👍
Done mine other day did it too tight in first place so loosen it a bit as steering was feeling heavy now its ok but still feels little stiffer than before I guess I need to drive it to bed in?
Yeah will loosen up after a few miles!
Ok. You changed the piece. But what about the whole process of measure and adjustment of the mechanical play???
I think you can get away without having to do that. As long as its torqued correctly looking at the tutorials
if it fail, does it cause steering hard to turn?
nope, actually as it wears the steering will get lighter
Hi Bro, whats the torque for this in tightening?
70Nm, it is stated in the comment section. Cheers
how tight you tightened. As if the steering wheel does not return to point 0, I turned a bit and I think that I do not feel too much what is happening with the wheels, feeling unreal. or maybe there is such a light steering in the f30?
So that the top cap is almost flush with the rack, I left about 1mm showing
@@flyro2000 Thank you for your answer. Did you leave 1mm right away or did you try different tightening?
What did you suggest?
@@karolkowalewski9013 went to 1mm straight away, if too heavy loosen off and if too light perhaps tighten further but only to the point where the top cap is flush with the rack
@@flyro2000 thnx
i just did this same fix on my F30 330D today and torqued it to 70Nm as per the BMW guide but the steering was too tight so ended up loosening by a turn or two and ended up roughly the same as Jacob around the 1mm showing
Did you have knocking over pot holes before you did this fix
Having the same problem, any suggestions?
@@marcbekius246 what problem you having
Thanks for responding, I accidentally had the new piece to loose. And when I wanted to steer it spun over the gears
So that my steering wheel was turned to the right and wheels not
After that I did the same thing backwards to bring everything In original position but now I get fault codes that the steering’s belt is not correct
Why is everyone doing this from under the car? Unless you have access to a garage ramp It's much quicker to do from above the engine bay (at least it was on my 320d). Air filter unit off and there plenty access, bonus is you can fit the new one and have a drive to check the steering before fitting the airbox back on
Depends what engine you have mate, mines the N55 so its a big lump and totally obscures view to the steering rack
Really useful, thanks
I wish mine was that easy to access on a Alfa 156. But that’s why knuckles were made to be jarred and smashed
What is name of this adapter?
Look on ebay for 'bmw steering rack tool'
Not bad mouthing your work/video but if you take the air silencer out you can do it from the top. Takes about 20 minutes tops
Can on the 4 cylinders, mines got the 6cyl n55 so there's no space above 👍
I'll keep my mouth shut then lol
Useful video - very nice - wish I'd seen it before I did mine :-)
Cheers man!
Did you have knocking over pot holes before you did this fix
I have the same issue with my BMW X5, however all the kits show for every F series apart from the X5 and X6. Has anyone else used the same kit for the same car as mine and it worked?
What is the part number listed
Not too sure but search for 'bmw steering rack repair kit' can be found on eBay for about 30 quid 👍
320d LCI 2015. I’m getting a clunk only on full lock either left or right. Did anyone have only these symptoms and if so, did this fix it?
Mate I have exactly this, did you also have a sort've dead spot in the steering? Almost like for a few points of the wheel rotation there was no power steering? Like a nothcy sensation I guess you could call it? I'm convinced it is this but got loads of people trying to convince me it is a ball joint or something on the suspension but I'm adamant it isn't as I have changed parts down there and know everything is fine lol.
@@KyTaundry I do have a dead spot. So far I've been told by mechanics that the steering rack bearings are worn and that's the reason it's like that...
Does anyone know what those jubilee clip looking parts are for? Didn't appear to be fitted in the video. Thanks in advance!
For if you change the boots at the end, wouldnt bother unless they are torn!
@@flyro2000 makes sense now! Thanks!

I have a bmw 420d gran coupe but can not find the right part for my vehicle on eBay !
Did you do this fix
Can it be done from above
Yes, I've done mine this morning on my 320d. All I had to do was remove the airbox for access
Yes it can on smaller enginec car, mine has the N55 so its a big lump
Hi Jacob will this kit work on my 2012 E 90 . The VIN is WBAPP17080NN74299 . Thank you
E90s use a different steering rack, they are hydraulic. Anything knocking on one of those will probably be tie rod ends or similar 👍
Actually think its possible it has an electric rack on the late e90s... have to have a look and see. Should fairly obvious, if it has a steering fluid reservoir ect
@@flyro2000 thank you 😊
Para X5 f15
I did him this and it made it worse. Well my mechanic did it.
Hi my steering in my f20 has play in it apparently this is what i might need ? Any help appreciated
I have a 2016 F20 LCI, too much play in the center of the steering and running highway, the center point is sensitive. Have done this repair, sensitive center point is definitely gone. Center of the steering is 80% gone. The rest 20%, I assume is related to non-run flat tyre which is softer.
Hi, mate What was torx settings?
around 70nm I think mate
Is this to fix the steering wheel shaking?
Yeah the shaking when the cars off
