I watched the movie Called "Moonage Daydream" about David Bowie and this song capture me as a passionate feeling! But this version here is the best! Thank's by this...hugs from Brazil!
I've been singing the album version to my kids for bed time... One is 16 years old now.... But I still get to sing it to my 3 year old..... it Works wonders getting kids to bed
Apart from the 1969 version of SPACE ODDITY, this was Bowie's first radio friendly single, IMHO (although Let Me Sleep Beside You had some potential too)
Had the sound+vision copy with this on it, lost that, then the next release of Space Oddity didn't have it, man was I pissed off, thanks for uploading :)
While Apollo slumbers, Hermes tends to his flock-- the clouds-- and they rest together in his cavern of mystery. May you see his wisdom, feel his mercy. As Apollo blessed Hermes and we, the world, with the sound of the waves as the first pure note. And how we, mere ants, toil in beauty to replicate. Oh, how well we do in our earnest attempts to seek that same blessing. _Is it the destination or is it simply the result of the journey?_
Actually, it's about a 'free festival' Bowie organised and held in 1969, and I suppose what you are correlating in the song with extraterrestrials is about tripping, more or less. "we scanned the skies with rainbow eyes" and "someone passed some bliss among the crowd" implies this. There's a bit more detail on the song here bowiesongs.wordpress.com/tag/memory-of-a-free-festival/ xx ☮
Mala Francesca (1:53)"We scanned the skies with rainbow eyes and saw machines of every shape and size. We talked with tall Venusians passing through. And Peter tried to climb aboard, but the captain shook his head, and away they soared, climbing through the ivory vibrant clouds. The sun machine is coming down, and we're going to have a party..."
I know the lyrics by my heart, haha. definitely see the extraterrestrial themes you're talking about, but what brought upon the contact? Certain substances maybe? "the children of the summers end" sit in the grass and enjoy an afternoon of music together, sharing "bliss" (a joint) and probably acid.
what year was this released? Before or after the album Space Oddity? I'm not loving this one as much as the more bare-bones organ version on the album. It's ok though.
Then Bowie did his job! Mercury/Philips asked him for a song à la "Hey, Jude", so he gave them this. And surely he didn't miss how big of a hit "Hey, Jude" was, and wanted a similar successful result for himself. Alas, he had a few years in the music industry trenches to go before his real breakthrough. This was not a hit.
TERRIBLE. Ronson's guitar and his other touches sound grafted on. Bowie sings in his fake Cockney'Anthony Newley voice, moving quickly into unfelt theatrics.. No wonder when it was released it sank without a trace.
Themanwhocameback2 + I've never heard this version and as much as I respect Mick I'm in complete agreement with you. I laughed as one commented here that it sounds 'soulful' ..oh that's rich.

@@stevenhaywood1195 I've got to agree there. Both versions are spectacular.
Much better version with Mick Ronson on, I love this. Mick's first official recording with Bowie April 1970. Apart from two BBC radio shows.
Unmistakable sound isn't it. Cheers.
agree
100% agree
Best version by far. So much more soul. I could weep at it's power and beauty.

Yes. No one mentions this one. One of the best

It's more polished, but the original has a better feeling to it.
Thanks for posting this excellant
I want this played at my funeral
A great album as well.
I'd like Turn! Turn! Turn! by the Byrds at my funeral.
il Solano Oh that's a good one. Haven't heard that song in ages.
me to......... squeak
Me too. also HEROES.
Mick Ronson on guitar and keyboards :-)
now that you mention it I hear him - unmistakable
Only came to this song through watching Moonage Daydream film and this song was played at the end and it blew me away a fantastic song.
for me the best version of this song, the lp version let's me thinking to a demo

I wonder what Sir Macca thought the first time he heard this.
Mick Ronson
What a great version !!!
Correct me if I am mistaken, but I am pretty certain this was the first of Bowie's many songs that touch on themes related to extraterrestrials/UFOs.

Gotta say MIck Ronson's simply glorious on this!~
This could have been TMWSTW.
You can hear the seeds of Starman in this,
This is the best version.
The Sun Machine is coming down and we’re gonna have a party...
I thought I had heard all early Bowie - apparently not.
awesome..... love this version happy birthday david

Thanks for the education on Mick Ronson I had no idea he was so great…Respect
I like the melancholy lullaby vibe of the album version much better.
Brilliant.
reminds me of the beatles for some reason

Yes, Beatles echoing in the distance - Superb Stuff!!
Beyond superb.
This is plain genius!
mmmh, suena mejor en el album.
Estoy de acuerdo. En lo original, hay un cierto sentido de pureza ingenua y sincera "autenticidad" que parece faltar aquí...
Ta very much.
he's very super genius . my best Bowie's song
wow first time ive ever heard totally brilliant version
