    Even as an Austrian, I had never heard of Anna Kiesenhofer. After her victory, I started reading up about her, and every bit of information just added to my amazement. A PhD in mathematics? University lecturer in Lausanne? Not part of a professional cycling team? Does all coaching herself? Devised a mathematical model about body temperature during cycling races? Outsmarted a team of Dutch cyclists who had won pretty much everything recently? What an amazing individual. Her cries of exhaustion, pain and joy after the finish line were just exemplary of what a truly deserving winner she is. Respect.

    Anna Kiesenhofer does not like to ride in pelotons, thats why she decided against a professional cycling career after a short try. At this race she rode alone behind the peloton and as soon they reached km 0 and race started she was gone to be never seen again by the peloton. The stuff of legends.

It's about determination, belief, hard work and being humble. Even if I had three Polish cyclists to root for, I was rooting for Anna when I saw how beautiful her effort was and when I read who she is and what a beautiful person she is off the bike, so to speak. No coach, no dozens of specialists, no nutritionists, physiotherapists, doctors, no contracts, no sponsors, just her passion, knowledge and hard work. I would argue, no team radios makes for WAAAAYYY better racing. No race director running simulations in a super computer with a thousand data points to determine when the best time to attack is. You want it? Go get it. Like your granddaddy's racing. Just make sure you count properly on how many riders were in the breakaway.

    • @tenderlovellcare

      Race radios are in fact a rather recent thing. The TdF did very well without them for a long time. I think they should be banned because they tend to make races boring, but I suppose the big teams want them.

    • @tenderlovellcare
      @tenderlovellcare 3 роки тому +4

      @@eudyptes5046 I do actually like what the radios can bring to a race sometimes. I think on a tour with multiple days and stages that the radio adds a powerful dynamic. We can see perfectly timed chases which go right to the line - Very exciting. But there is something far more pure and exposing when they are removed. Perhaps we would see more incredible 'Annas' without radios? I think I would like to see a race where only the riders can communicate with their team mates.

    • @johnandrews3568
      @johnandrews3568 3 роки тому +12

      You are spot on. This is how I learned how to race and it make the best outcomes. It teaches riders how to think and do critical analysis on the road, keep track of who's who, who's away and what threat do they pose. Now pro racers are too coddled and just do what they're told from the team car. I wonder if they ever considered if there's a tech failure on the radios... then what? Ban race radios for sure. Makes racing come alive!

    • @levbobrov1398
      @levbobrov1398 3 роки тому +7

      Agreed! I'd also argue that radios would put smaller team (like a very small Austrian team) at disadvantage. So as long as every individual has to qualify separately, and not the team, they should not allow any radios.

      The main thing are the lack of radios. They are allowed to use them almost everywhere else other than the world championships. Radios play a huge role in today’s cycling. All those that say but it wasn’t like this in the past are missing the point. That’s how it’s done now. Bikes change, wheel change, technology improves. Power meters had this same effect saying that it would kill cycling. But they haven’t. If you’re used to something in normal competition then it is removed well now they changed the game.
      I think a good example would be in rowing where they have a coxswain. That’s a person at the back of the boat with a radio pacing the rest of the team. To keep them in sync. Without that person the group could get out of sync causing paddles to be hit or catch the water turning the boat and losing them the race. Same thing and at the women’s race this lack of radio derailed their chances at gold.

      I agree with you. The only controversial thing to my mind was the churlish reaction of the Dutch cyclists when they realised they had lost, which was hardly in keeping with the Olympian spirit ! I don’t buy the bit about the radios either. The conditions of the race are well known in advance : the Dutch were simply outthought and out performed by a very worthy winner who made all and thoroughly deserved her win.

Bush league racing by the Dutch, but it looks good on them given their unsportswomanlike conduct at the finish, all four women staring daggers at the winner and no one going over to congratulate her. The only rider I saw congratulate Anna was Cecilie Uttrup-Ludwig, who is always a class act and mature beyond her years. You must be joking the Dutch team did not know who was up front and the crash is what lead to this mess, this is why no one even knew where Anna was.
      This was a completely fluke, and no team after this will ever let this happen again. This was a massive fail on the dutch team part, case and point where was Anna in the time trial medals? Vleuten played with the field there. I watched it live and wondering "I think the dutch team forgot about her?" yep I was right and Vleuten crossed the line thinking she won lol.

      It was absolutely a fluke, bro. She may have been the strongest, but when you don’t have any teammates and another team (Dutch) has 4 riders that are all nearly as strong as Anna, there is no good reason for one of them to not win. The outcome of this race points to incredibly F’d up tactics by the favorites. It’s a bad look for bike racing in general and especially for women’s racing, unless you’re a casual observer not understanding the fuckery unfolding before your eyes.

I think Anna clearly knew something was off and just hoped for the best and rode away to the end. There is no one in their right mind cycling next to these elite fit cyclists that thought a monster team like the Dutch would allow someone riding solo with no team would be allowed to ride hours on end along, only a complete idiot would believe that. I am glad Anna but I don’t think this kind of won will ever happen again. Case and point Van Vleuten with a $12,000 TT bike and the Afghanistan rider with an entry level Scott road bike with clip on TT bars lmfao. Has anyone done math could the committed peleton have caught Kiesenhofer if when they passed the Shapira/Plitcha they all knew rider was up road? There were 4.5km left and a 2 minute lead. I doubt it. In that case, the radio excuse is silliness - letting gap go, not chasing as a team, assuming solo rider could bridge had little to do with radio.

    • @sdbentrup
      @sdbentrup 3 роки тому +2

      Someone can check my math, but assuming Kiesenhofer was going her average speed of 35.3 km/h, she would have closed the last 4.5 km in 7.64 minutes. For the peloton to do 4.5 km in, say, 2:15 less (5.39 minutes) they would have needed to go 50.34 km/h. Consider that AVV's Strava shows a speed of 48.3 km/h, 5.63 minutes, on the circuit in the TT (she has the QOM, BTW) and Elisa Longo Borghini's Strava shows a time of 6:30 on the circuit from Sunday. It's not impossible, but it would have taken an all-out, effort from the Dutch to put someone at the same speed as an individual rider on a TT bike. As we GCN fans all know, 4 riders on road bikes can only catch a single rider on a TT bike when 3 of those riders are so fast they drop the 4th rider ;)
      FWIW - Kiesenhofer is on Strava but has posted nothing since 2016, which is sad, because she likely has a QOM or two in there.

    I read a lot of comments "blaming" the lack of radios for the outcome of the race. From what I saw from the race (and I did not see all of it so please correct me if I'm wrong), I think that this is quite ridiculous. The lead group of only 5 riders where formed in the first few kilpometers of the race, there were never more than 2 groups in front of the peloton for the whole race and never more than 7 (or so) riders in front of the peloton. There were only very few crashes a very few attacks from the bunch untill the last few kilometers.
    There are races that are complicated, hectic or even chaotic but this race clearly was not and if you are not able to keep up in this race, you must not blame the lack of radios in my opinion.
    Kiesenhofer is the abolutely deserved champion irrespectively from team radios and dutch tactics.

I just thought that with no radios, they would rely on the marshals, soigneurs, and team cars to relay the information (like old school). To split the difference between race radios and no race radios, I think a compromise could be radios with just the marshals relaying split times, upcoming obstacles, road furnitures, etc., but no team directors giving instructions. It's a stretch to say they weren't riding as a team when it shows that they were constantly communicating with each other etc. throughout the race. Really? Can't they count? Unbelievable! They didn't even elbow-greet her. Anyway, Anna won. We salute you! You made Women's racing popular. Thanks for the exciting race.

    Nice to see some positive sides of this story. We Dutch are only debating on what went wrong before and during the race. What he didn't mentioned was that the head coach in the car couldn't reach the racers and the Dutch ladies didn't know it was such a big time gap. Normally the guy on the motorbike comes along occasionally and shows the time gaps. This didn't happen that much so they were confused the whole race. When v.Vleuten went the first time she even asked the cameraman what the time difference was. At that point she didn't know there where 3 in front.
    All and all it was a lack of preparations and strategy because they knew this would be a problem. Also my comment is that they didn't took there responsibility as favorites and didn't take control over the race. Our arrogance tricked us.

      Some positive sides? Maybe not in Rotterdam, but for most of the world there were lots and lots positives and very few negatives. I don't buy they didnt know gap was big - it was like that for hours and others were in peleton too. They just let it go, didnt chase like a team, assumed AVL could close 6 minutes solo.....ok the last little screw up radio would have made difference.....but when they caught the last 2 riders, it still would have been very hard to catch kiesendorfer so to me radio is an excuse and distraction

      Very strange. Anna was informed on the timegap🤫 Really.
      She could calculate and reduce speed/save energy to win at the last 40 km.
      If you are a lonely fighter you rely on yourself, the dutch (maybe others as well) on the whole team= low personal responsibility!

    Kiesenhofer's win is a WIN for women's cycling. The problem with women's cycling is the "wealth disparity" of talent. I think this is a step towards physical egalitarianism... Bravo!

    If Anne Kiesenhofer had not been able to sustain her pace , just like the others in the break away group, everyone would have congratulated the Dutch strategy, but how could the Dutch have guessed that Anne Kiesenhofer would be so strong?

    I am extremely happy Kiesenhofer won gold. I have never liked how countries acted as a team for an obviously individual effort event.
