The city of Pangkalan Brandan, from here the glory of Indonesian Oil began to be known. Pangkalan Brandan is a port city in Langkat Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia, located on the east coast of the island of Sumatra, 64 kilometers northwest of Binjai City, 80 km from Medan, the capital city of North Sumatra province. The population is about 40 thousand people and heterogeneous, starting from the Malays who live on the coast, there are also Javanese, Batak, Acehnese, and other tribes. The location is strategic because it is traversed by the eastern causeway of Sumatra and the gateway to Aceh.
In the past, Pangkalan Brandan was famous as an oil-producing area. Pangkalan Brandan is the first area in Indonesia to support the development of other areas as oil supplies. The well can be traced to the origins of the world oil giant Royal Dutch Shell. Therefore Pangkalan Brandan is famous as one of the oldest oil fields in Indonesia and has been explored since the days of the Dutch East Indies.
The Pangkalan Brandan refinery is the second refinery built by the Dutch. The first one was built in 1890 in Wonokromo. But the refinery in Brandan is more famous for its larger production capacity. The Brandan refinery has historical value as a milestone in Indonesia's first oil export. This momentum occurred on December 10, 1957, which is now commemorated as Pertamina's birthday, when Pertamina President Director Ibnu Sutowo signed an export agreement with Harold Huttun acting on behalf of his company Refining Associates of Canada (Refican) with a contract value of US$30,000. The eyes of the world are on Pangkalan Brandan. Pangkalan Brandan has become a milestone in Indonesia's economic revival when it was slumped by war and upheaval in various regions. In fact, without Pangkalan Brandan, the history of PT. Pertamina never existed.
In 2007, March 7, 2007, to be exact, the oil refinery which was very historic and more than 120 years old was closed, due to the low supply from the oil refinery. Since 2009 Pertamina housing has been loaned to the TNI for Marine housing. The nickname of the oil city of Pangkalan Brandan is now just a story of the past.

Dahulu ada ISSUE mbak Tutut mau membangun Kilang Minyak di Belawan atau P Berandan. Tapi tidak ada kelanjutannya. Padahal di Berandan, Pertamina sudah punya segalanya. Pelabuhan,tanah luas, perkantoran, perumahan, Rumah sakit, Lapangan Golf dan sarana olah raga lainnya, serta bioskop. Pokoknya sangat lengkap, dan bisa digunakan untuk memancing minat, investor masuk dan bekerja sama dengan PT PERTAMINA...!

Pertempuran dahsyat terjadi pada puncaknya tanggal 13 Agustus 1947, yang meluluhlantakkan kilang minyak yang ada. Peristiwa tersebut dikenal dengan Berandan Bumi Hangus.. Hingga saat ini, Berandan Bumi Hangus selalu diperingati dengan berbagai macam acara seperti pementasan drama pertempuran, karnaval pakaian adat dan profesi oleh anak anak sekolah, dan lain sebagainya... Tetapi Kejayaan Kota minyak ini hanya tinggal sejarah 😢😢😭😭😭...
