What a traumatic experience you went through! I'm so glad you recovered, but l would hire a lawyer and sue them for malpractice. I believe doctors get away with things like this because they can cover it up. It's unfortunate that there isn't a way to have everything recorded for evidence. It sounds like the hospital or doctor is trying to find a way to cover up your episode or hope you forget about it since you haven't heard back from them. I think the hospitals should have cameras for that purpose. I have gone through a few episodes where l had a few different procedures done and the drs didn't look at my chart and turned out the injection they gave me had epinephrine in it and it reacted with my blood pressure medicine. My blood pressure went to almost twice the normal and my heart was racing so fast and my head was pounding....it felt like my body was going to explode. These doctors get paid well and should be held responsible in cases like ours. I'm so glad you are healing, l can imagine how you felt as l thought l was going to die as well. Take care and l hope you get justice for what happened to you!

Yeah I agree. Doctors are deluded into thinking they’re demigods. In the movie Patch Adams in his early days of study to be a doctor the students were told how very superior they are to their patients. It was sickening. I think many of them feel that way though and they don’t give a damn about their patients. Just file them through like products on a conveyor belt. If you have a decent doctor be grateful and if they’re on the Gold Coast let me know! I’ve yet to find one.

There is such a lesson to be learnt here. There needs to be restitution for the injury and loss that has been caused.

Omg the same thing happened to my mom and it was her family doctor who did it and after they took her off the first penicillin they have her another drug in the same family of penicillin and she went into toxic shock. She was un the burn unit for five months her entire body pealed inside and out including her brain and eyes, needleas to say she was never the same after that she healed but had to have surgeries to open orifices that had grown over it was by far the most horrific thing I have ever seen . She has since passed but did live 10 yrs after horribly disfigured and disabled , I am so sorry this happened to you these things should never happen; long story short she developed other allergies because of this toxic shock so be careful with all meds your prescribed. I'm sorry for rambling on but I have shivers and real fear for what happened to you hope you never have anyone do that to you again.

Your story is why no one should be left in a hospital without a family member being able to stay with them. I remember when my grandparents were elderly, multiple mother and her two sisters NEVER would leave my grandmother or grandpa in the hospital, alone, they always stayed with them. Not to mention the malpractice that can happen there can be some really hateful nurses or doctors. My mother and Aunts never let them speak disrespectful to my grandparents. You can only imagine what goes on in some nursing homes where no family visits. They almost have no accountability these days. Sad! Glad you are feeling better.

Christine, I am so sorry to hear you went through what must have been an absolute nightmare. I am glad you are clearly a strong woman and didn't let this fell you. I am from the UK and we fortunately have a first class medical system, but the problems of doctors failing to listen is a worldwide one. I am seriously ill and disabled so I understand what you went through because of many years of personal experience. A sheer coincidence happened a couple of weeks ago. I was sent to a neurologist and when I received a copy of the letter she'd sent to my GP (local doctor) the neurologist had got every point wrong. She didn't even address it to the correct GP! I have been irritated by doctors failing to listen properly many times before, but never has _every single thing_ been wrong. I often say doctors should be trained in listening skills.
There is a reason for me wittering on about myself when this is about you. I have collected together a box containing important papers. When I have a medical emergency (it happens) I make sure I take with me to the hospital a copy of relevant medical documents, bound together neatly in a file. I have more than one serious condition so the file means the hospital has everything they need to know. This isn't fool proof. I have had nurses refuse to give doctors the file and "losing it". On the other hand, a doctor once thanked me for putting this file together for them.
I asked my GP to do the top sheet. It has my medical conditions, list of serious events and list of medicines. Having a doctor write this on official medical stationary helps. This is the reason for me sharing. I recommend that you get your local doctor (I don't know what they are called in Australia) to write down your allergy, how serious it is, what has happened and any other information about your health. Put a few copies in a file and make sure if you have another crisis (God forbid) or ever need to go into hospital this document is given. Keep a document in a damage-free area in your handbag or purse, just in case something happens when you're out. Make sure everyone has a copy. One to the paramedics, one to the triage nurse, one in the emergency...
I have to be honest. In my experience, most doctors are snobs and they judge women like us who have tattoos. It is unlikely they will read it. Having a letter from a doctor will give you peace of mind and make it highly unlikely this will ever happen again.
In the UK, the statute of limitation on medical negligence is only two and a half years. They drag their feet and complicate things whenever they can. Many people (like me) were so ill after the event they are simply not well enough to fight. The consequence of this is they don't worry about being held accountable, because they seldom are.
If you feel able to fight, I say fight. God bless you. I hope this long message helps.

    • @ChristinesHomeAffairs
      @ChristinesHomeAffairs  2 роки тому +1

Thanks Kerry. I keep telling everyone that if I'm ignored again, I'll whack my tattooed arm across their head to make sure they get the message. (I won't of course, but it gets a giggle) Unfortunately no amount of paperwork would have helped, as the Dr that made the error, knew of my allergy, it was in writing, and he had discussed it with me at the time. He obviously thought he knew better than me. I'm still waiting to hear from the medical complaints commission on this before I take it further 😀

Sadly, even in the USA doctors get by with malpractice. My bf had to drop his suit because the lawyer, who advertised "I don't get paid unless I win the case", demanded $50,000 in expense fees or he would drop the case! 2 years after signing contract with him. Reading the fine print is an absolute must! To this day I wonder if the doctor's insurance paid that crook of a lawyer off!

I am always terrified anytime I have to go to the hospital. I won't take any medicines without double checking what they are giving me. When I had my heart attack, one of the nurses sat right by my head and held my hand and quietly told me everything that was going on as they did the procedure and placed the stents in my arteries. I was given some AFTER I TOLD the anaesthetist to NOT give me any, it took me all of about 3 months to get back out of the mental fog I was placed in.

It's very sad this happens all the time you can go to emergency care they send you home..... later patient dies and they are not accountable. The hospital will do a review for future reference but no discipline is ever taken. Even though you have the new tattoo, any further encounters that might include medication or IVs or lotions etc, be very verbal with any health staff you encounter.Even if you have just told the office staff, then a nurse, then a tech, and then another nurse or doctor comes in you can't assume one person has told the other or that they have looked at notes....If anybody gives you attitude, you can drive it home for them why you are checking---that should do it.

Sadly, it seems that medical care is not advancing at all. My bf now has renal failure from the lousy care he was given 12 years ago when he had gallbladder surgery and they left a 5ml stone behind which blocked his bile duct resulting in necrotizing pancreatitis where 2/3 of his pancreas was destroyed. There is so much more that they did during that year that each time they nearly killed him but I won't get into details except to say that we later discovered during the gallbladder surgery the doctor decided against doing a simply dye test to see if he had gotten all stones out, that would have prevented him becoming insulin dependent diabetic resulting in renal failure and now facing kidney transplant if lucky and dialysis if unlucky. My bf likes to say "When they call it practicing medicine, they aren't kidding as they are practicing on you!"
I am so thankful that you are okay and send prayers for complete healing to you!

Wow Laura, that is a terrible ordeal for both you and your bf. It's incredible how many mistakes are made in medicine 🙄

Can you get in touch with an A current affairs program? This is so wrong! Maybe contact a No win No fee lawyer as you’ve been royally screwed. Sorry to hear that. I’m going to tell my daughter to maybe get a tattoo for her penicillin allergy! I’m glad you’re ok and do fight this as that is one scary story.

I just watched your video this evening. Unfortunately, while medical knowledge is expanding, accountability isn't. I have a very severe lidocaine allergy, and I've been hospitalized too many times. The people starting IVs do not check allergies, and if I'm not quick, they will inject me with the numbing medication before fiddling with the IV, and sends me in to anaphylaxis. This has happened too many times to count. It doesn't matter if I"m wearing the red bracelets AND have a huge sign above my bed.
On another, sort of related note, my daughter had a stroke following her COVID vaccine. I took her to the ER (she is an adult). The doctor who was there mocked us for coming in, and told her that she needed to clear out to make way for patients with real problems, such as gunshot wounds or heart attacks. He also went to the effort of making an addendum to her chart, which would discourage further medical "professionals" from seeing her or treating her. She was a wonderful artist and teacher, and now has totally lost her ability to speak and every creative bone in her body.
Watch out for your health, because in this world, we are really on our own. Good luck with your journey!

This makes me so angry for you. Whenever my mom was in hospital, I used to stay with her 24/7. (Twenty times in 13 years) I've slept on chairs, floors, window sills, you name it. Most hospitals were happy to have me and brought pillows, blankets, etc. Some were not so accommodating. One time, she was almost given someone else's meds after having a stroke and couldn't communicate. Another time when she was in for a broken back, they started to prep her for heart surgery. Another time, an off duty employee came in the middle of the night and tried to molest her. He didn't realize I was sleeping on the floor next to the bed. I could go on. You're right, Christine, you could have died, your family would have been given some b.s. explanation and never would have known the truth. Don't stop pressing for answers.
To all: Check the laws in your city regarding staying with relatives in hospital. If at all possible, have someone stay with them, especially if they are elderly, very young, or unable to advocate for themselves. Mistakes happen a LOT. My mom would have been killed or injured a number of times if someone hadn't been with her. Don’t be afraid to question things, no matter how uncomfortable the medical staff makes you feel. You're not there to make friends. I was eventually referred to as "The Red-Headed Daughter from Hell" and proud of it! 🤣🤣
Christine, I'm immensely grateful that you survived the health care system and hope you're back to your young self now💖💖💖

I'm so sorry that this happened to you, Christine. I hope that you have hired a lawyer to represent you, and that the people who are responsible are held accountable, as well as the hospital. I had a similar situation, but was never able to find someone to help me. Back in 2002, I was having a minor surgery performed at a surgical center, and then was sent on my way home. I started feeling strange, and we called the doctor's office, and they told me to take some over the counter pain medications and call back if I didn't feel better. Long story short, I went to my regular doctor's office 5 days later, and he sent me straight to the hospital to be admitted for sepsis, and I almost died. While I was in the hospital I developed diabetes, and am now a type 1 diabetic. I contacted several lawyers to see if anything could be done against the surgical center, and was told that nothing could be done. The worst of it all was that when i spoke to the surgeon after getting released from the hospital, he told me that 2 other patients ended up with sepsis and he suspected that the staff at the surgical center did not properly sterilize the surgical equipment. I couldn't get anything more than an apology from the surgical center, but I certainly hope that the doctors and staff that treated you at the hospital are held accountable! I wish you the best of luck, and I hope you continue to fully recover!
