In the 1960's in Portsmouth where I grew up there was a record shop called' The music box'. They had bought up vast quantities of record library's belonging to various shore based naval establishments in the area. These would have been in the officers quarters & were all classical & most were in mint condition. Even at the age of about 7 I knew what was good in the way of recordings &, with the help of my Grand parents, bought nearly all of Rachmaninoff's electric recordings from the 20 & 30's. We would stagger home with a large pile of these & spend the rest of the evening wallowing in some magnificent music. Happy days!
I am only pleased to hear you are alive and kicking!, Please take a few more days' leave because BIYTB withdrawal symptoms can be painful at times!
My late father had a book of records similar to yours of The Pirates Of Penzance on HMV. I, then a child, had a liking for the Policeman's Song and played it over and over and eventually broke it. Father was furious. I still have the book of records with that one missing.
I have that very set and must record "the Policeman's song"
Being a child of the 50 s, my first 78 was a little yellow Captain Kangaroo record. The horse in striped pajamas. Yes I still have it , but I’ve added many “adult” 78s since then. Great conversation.
Yes that's probbably it as I'd have classed that as light music, must be a rare set!
my first 78 was an Australian hmv 1940s of artie shaw sold sam and rocking chair i still got it
My first was Woody Woodpecker Song on yellow vinyl, backed with Bach's Gavotte.
My grandparents 1950s records would have been the first 78s I heard, and I have no idea what the first ones I bought were as they were a small job lot of swing records I played over and over! Didn't hmv have an even earlier album that was a compilation of single sided light music/overture records, a program of popular music, something like that, saw it on ebay once, wish I'd bought it now! though it could well be later than the Foust set.
I have the Coldstream Guards set of "the Nutcracker Suite" which Proudie says is the first HMV album set but who knows !
