Please make a Part 5 soon! I've watched all the four parts and I'm happy to play those "new" RPGs. Can't say I went with them all, but I have a whole lot of new stuff, thanks to you! I believe the old-time RPGs (at the sprite/pixel-art age) had a lot of gameplay content to keep the players on the game, and keep them curious. And I think that "magic" has been lost once the games got modern and went to the 3D. It is hard to know what they will become in the future, but I hope they turn back with this magic, being on nice graphics. But it's not that bad to replay all the classics and give attention to indies just like Shovel Knight.
Yes, it's a complete reworking of the entire game from the ground up, making it way more accessible, giving the player more options, Yasumi Matsuno himself was heavily involved in the project. The sheer number of quality of life issues improved in this version make it worth trying out, but there is SO MUCH MORE to it than that. It's a master-class renovation of a game that was an utterly resplendent masterpiece in its original incarnation. Anyone interested should really try it out, it is without hyperbole the best and most historically significant SRPG ever made, and with copious cherries added on top for the PSP release. Do yourself a favor and give it a try... it's one of those games that I can truly say I am glad to have experienced before I die, and that others with similar taste would be depriving themselves of something of great beauty and genius...
@@jedgrahek1426 I'm currently playing a lot of older games through emulation simply because so much of modern entertainment has been infected by woke politics and I miss the days when entertainment was made for fun instead of pushing a particular ideology. I am glad I can go back to oldschool gaming to escape the nonsense. Tactics Ogre not only looks fun, but I am digging the art style of the character portraits.
@@maskedbadass6802 That's really awesome, I'm glad you enjoy what you've seen of the game so far. The choice given to the player at the end of Chapter 1 (perhaps Act 1, it's been a long time) is itself quite an education in realpolitik (false flag attacks, specifically). In response the other things you said, I'll just say that the reasons for the degradation of quality in entertainment media are very complex, and are fundamentally more a consequence of neoliberalism and market forces dictating artistic choices, with the factors you mentioned being more tertiary and subjective. In my opinion. I'm just really happy to know someone's experiencing Tactics Ogre, as no matter what one's political persuasion it is more worthy of attention than most games released currently.
Ogre Battle: Let Us Cling Together also had a Playstation 1 release called "Tactics Ogre", but I seem to remember something about rather bad loading times, because it was on CD.

Nice set of videos in here, thanks a lot for the work! There's a nice bunch of good snes rpgs reviewed here, but there are lots that haven't been mentioned and are good as well. We have, for instance, Wozz, Jungle Wars II, the Daikaijuu Monogatari saga, Lennus II, Idea no Hi, Hourai Highschool, Granhistoria, Madara 2, Kabuki Rocks, Shin Seiki Odysselya I and II, Tengai Makyou Zero, Last Bible III, Glory of Herakles III and IV, G.O.D... Some of these games even received fantranslations just a few years after this video was published (Herakles IV in 2016, TMZero and G.O.D in 2017-2018...). I encourage you guys to do another video comenting these new additions ;)
Thank you for watching! The plan from here on out is to just give each of those games their own video, like I have with stuff like Emerald Dragon, Tales of Phantasia, Seiken Densetsu 3, Romancing SaGa, etc. But, as you know, these games are really time consuming so it'll likely be a long while before I'm able to through each of them. Enjoy the rest of your day
Or at least the 2nd best DQ5 game of all time. I prefer the original. If you've played the original, and then tried the DQ5 remake, you'd be like: "what is this"? Even the intro was changed.
For me it’s the first best. I couldn’t stand 6 it was a narrative mess but 5 has the strongest story in the series 8 has better mechanics and gameplay however

Tactics Ogre IS awesome. If you loved FFT, you gonna love TO. Side note: All the "Ogre" games ARE connected. But you can play them without knowing too much of the other series.
The PSP remake of Tactics Ogre is fantastic. I highly recommend it. They made a lot of mechanical and subtle visual improvements. Also, fun fact: Squaresoft bought the company that made this game, and they went on the create Final Fantasy Tactics, so the similarity is no coincidence. www.gamesradar.com/tactics-ogre-let-us-cling-together-preparing-to-hug-it-out-strategy-style-on-psp/
Der Langrisser is one of my favorite SNES games, it's a fantastic RPG, IMO. SOOOO much replayability. Dual Orb 2 is pretty good too, although a lot more generic.
One thing I love about your reviews is that my feelings are usually the opposite of yours, but I still enjoy hearing your take. I just played the SFC versions of Dragon Quest V and VI, and I found DQV to be by far the superior experience. I actually started with the mobile version of DQV but switched to the SFC version. You say in the review you don't know why anyone would choose the SFC version, so here's why I did: 1. Even though it's technically flat, I enjoy the art style of SFC games more than what was done for the DQ DS / mobile versions. They hearken to an ugly, transitional period where 3D-style graphics hadn't been made beautiful yet, and they unnecessarily complicate things by making a 2D game 3D. 2D art has the ability to express something coherently; bad 3D art tends to be awkward and toylike. For example, take the cave leading to the hero's homeland. In the SFC version, you can tell that you're walking through the tombs of ancient kings, to me reminiscent of Andean culture. In the DS / mobile version, it just looks like any other cave. The generic cartoonishness of the more recent art lessens the game's ability to set a tone, in my opinion. 2. The translations of the remakes use a sense of humor I just don't like. Translators are allowed to take liberties and change things around to try to adapt different cultural impacts, but I just don't like what has been done with these games or the DQ series in general. I can tolerate it in other DQ games, but DQV has a uniquely melancholy mood that's marred by the translators' attempts at humor and witty banter. 3. There's a lot of extra content that I just don't find entertaining. Extra fetch quests, gambling, etc. I like a slimmer, more focused game experience. I find that mor impactful. 4. The SFC version is more challenging, with 3 rather than 4 party members allowed. It adds a kind of simplicity. I would say the biggest flaw of the SFC version is the sound quality. The compositions are stellar, but the midi voices sound a little dated and hokey in some tracks. Not terrible to listen to - just dated and limited. I would say the PS2 version is the best on that front, with DS / mobile in second place. Why I liked V more than VI is really another topic, but the short version is that I find DQ V to be a coherent, finished, emotionally-ripe masterpiece with some dated technical limitations, while I find DQ VI to be interesting in terms of atmosphere and fun in some aspects of gameplay, but tedious in others. The encounter rate in dungeons was definitely too high for my taste - not sure if it's at Lufia-levels though. Most importantly, both the story and the translation are literally unfinished. I could get through it, but I didn't find it satisfying at all.
I've beaten Langrisser in Japanese. I remember it was a really really good game with super fun gameplay and had a great story too. Must play. Tactics Ogre is a great game but I think it had an official English release, even a remastered version. It's also a must-play with a fantastic story.
These all look good. I just ebay’d Dual Orb 2 bc it stuck out to me. I’d really like to play DQ 5 down the road. Another great vid. Keep up the good work!
Tactics Ogre:LUCT for the PSP is hands down the best Tactical RPG of all time. I played the SNES and PS1 versions, and while those are fantastic in their own rights, the PSP remake is a whole 'nother beast entirely. It changes a lot of the core game play mechanics (arguably) for the better and does the translation even better. It really is like GOT the video game. One of my favorite games of all time.
Worth noting that the remake of tactic ogre on the psp is somehow even better than the original due to a pretty substantial ui overhaul, improved graphics, and all sorts of quality of life improvements that make the game such a joy to play and replay over and over
Any idea how to make money using the casinos in Dragon Quest 6 snes? I seems much faster to just grind, so i get xp + faster money. Its strange, i like the concept of those casinos but they seem not efficient.
A Japanese TV station recently did a poll where 50k users voted on their all-time favorite video games. Dragon Quest V came in 2nd place for most votes right behind Breath of the Wild. It's interesting you gave it a pretty blasé review here. I really enjoyed the first 4 of the series and haven't decided whether to start the 5th.
I don't understand the problems I'm facing with Langrisser. It always starting to lag whenever I progress halfway into the game. Is it because I have bad ROMs or its really just the game's fault?
Just wanna chime in and say that if anyone enjoys the tactical RPGs covered in this episode, definitely check out Fire Emblem 4. It's my favorite of the genre on this system
As cheerful as it is Dragon Quest V is also the darkest of the Dragon Quest games story-wise. And I know one thing if you manage to bought the DS version of Dragon Quest 4 to 6, hold on to dear life to them those games are really spiking up in price.
Neugier was cancelled due to Renovation Products, which was Telenet Japan's NA division, getting bought out by Sega. Atlus should've picked up the localization rights, kinda like how they did with Super Valis IV.
Great work as always ! I think theres a new Der Langressier coming out on 3DS (or is it a remake?). I have DW 4-5-6 on DS but Id like to get them on SNES, especially 6, and 3. They just ooze SNES charm. I love watchin these lists, but my wallet doesn't.
Anyone here know how to get the Tactics Ogre rom to work with english patch. Im using ZSNES , changed the file names to the same name. I get the Aeon Genesis screen and it goes black. help? or link
It took a while to figure out that the last game was named "Neugier: Umi to Kaze no Kodou" and that was after trying variations on the end of the Japanese name; the first part was the German for "New Gear" and is pronounced like "noy geer" (or as Nipponized, "noigi-a"). It might help putting a Romanization of the title on screen in the future, because I had a tough time searching for "nugaier" or some other variant of how you actually pronounced the name. (A lesser issue is that the Japanese word Romanized as "to" is pronounced almost like the English "toe" rather than the English "too".)
In terms of mature or intriguing storytelling, I think Ogre Tactics is just as good as Final Fantasy VI or Chrono Trigger. It's a difficult game but the story is very well thought out and dark.
+Chaser If you have a PS2 there is La Pucelle Tactics. Havent played it yet, but it looks cool. Its not too much either I wanna say one of the guys who worked on Fire Emblem made them
+Zack Schilling I have ps2,thanks for the suggestion, i watch it,the gameplay is really similar to disgaia i guess,it really an enjoyable one,but still,i was looking for other type of game but thanks :)
Langrisser I & II got an updated rerelease on Steam recently. Apparently the biggest criticisms of it are that it's far too easy and the story is a cliche storm.
I'd love to see you do more of these. It looks like it's going to take you 7 or more videos to cover them all however. God, there are boatloads of these.
***** Well, I just I counted them up on GameFAQs by going to the SNES section, selecting the RPG genre, and then selecting Japan for region. I was careful not to count any games that were released in North America or games that you've already covered. I then counted up all of the turn-based Strategy games. The grand total is..... 158!!! Yes, it's actually more then either one of us predicted(especially me). Now, my count could be off by up to 10 or so, but 148 is still a ridiculously high amount of RPG's! So, if you do 10 games per video, it's still going to take 15 or 16 more of them before you're done. Perhaps you should find someone else to help you tackle the rest? Just an idea. I'm thinking you could cover half of the games remaining, and another guy could do the other half of them.
Umm sorry to call you wrong but I bought tactics Orge while I was in VA between the '97-'06... So it was released in the USA on PS1 back then... Gamer Since for almost 40 Years

Is there any way I can play dragon quest in English on my super famicom
Excellent video, thanks for making it dude.
tactics orges sequel looks exactly like ff tactics.. i wish they released ff tactics on the snes or n64..
Ogre Battle 64 was incredible.
Anyone here know how to get the Tactics Ogre rom to work with english patch. Im using ZSNES , changed the file names to the same name. I get the Aeon Genesis screen and it goes black. help? or link
NVM figured it out.. was using the wrong version of the rom
Is DQ6 translated the whole way? I read somewhere that the translated version has some bugs and not everything is translated.
No the patch I used was fine I think the problem was with the writing and exposition in the original Japanese. The story is very confusing
Can you spell the last game featured? Thanks!
The Brandish room rotation feels like a unique gimmick making the game. Otherwise it would be another Zelda game
DS DQV actually includes a third and IMO cooler bride option - if you like pairing your character with a domme that is. Debora :)
Yeah her bitch sister. I don’t know why anyone would choose her unless for laughs
Thanks. But, you could've just checked the description.
I usually do, and I'm not sure why I didn't notice the "SHOW MORE" link this time and thought it was all just links to earlier episodes of the series.
Neugier means curiousity.
Great list! I will get the DQ SNES repros eventually.
Avoid 6. I played the ds remake and it’s my least favourite dq game. It makes no sense narratively speaking.
@@j0nnyism Good to know, thanks!
The PSP remake is great for ogre tatics
Tactics Ogre was on PS One and this looks alot like it.
In terms of mature or intriguing storytelling, I think Ogre Tactics is just as good as Final Fantasy VI or Chrono Trigger. It's a difficult game but the story is very well thought out and dark.
is there any similar game like ogre battle march of the black queen?
+Chaser If you have a PS2 there is La Pucelle Tactics. Havent played it yet, but it looks cool. Its not too much either I wanna say one of the guys who worked on Fire Emblem made them
+Zack Schilling I have ps2,thanks for the suggestion, i watch it,the gameplay is really similar to disgaia i guess,it really an enjoyable one,but still,i was looking for other type of game but thanks :)
Have you watched the new Dragon Quest V movie?
"Neugier" is German, meaning "curiosity".
Thanks for watching. There's at least 40 or so that I haven't covered yet that have English patches, and maybe 70-80 in addition to that
***** Well, I just I counted them up on GameFAQs by going to the SNES section, selecting the RPG genre, and then selecting Japan for region.
I'm thinking you could cover half of the games remaining, and another guy could do the other half of them.
heh the main character is Drunk... I imagine him going around as a lush
Dual orb 2 is ...ok. main gripe is the battle rate. Expect to fight another battle every 3 steps
Dragon Quest was the most popular series in Japan...over even Final Fantasy. (Yes...I know I'm late to the party here...🖤
Umm sorry to call you wrong but I bought tactics Orge while I was in VA between the '97-'06... So it was released in the USA on PS1 back then... Gamer Since for almost 40 Years
No mention of fire emblem in this series? Or am I just deaf?
started dual orb 2 and i'm in mid game i think, the game is good, classic but fine, just expect a random encounter every 10 steps in dungeons.
