What’s sad is that every negative thing that happened or was mentioned in the film is actually going on somewhere in the world to various children. It’s sickening.
The author of the novel the movie was based on taught a remedial reading class in Harlem before she started writing. The character Precious was based on several girls that she actually worked with while she was teaching there.
For sure, its a really sad reality and its very hard to watch because we all know it happens, we just pretend it doesnt or at least we try not to think about it too much. I have a lot of respect for the people that choose to look at it and confront that reality in order to make change (like the people in the movie). Something I liked was that they made it clear that its a cycle, it happened to Precious' mom and so for her, it wasnt that unacceptable. Hopefully some kids saw this and realized help is available and that you can break the cycle or like, myself - I was really surprised by their reactions to stuff that I guess I thought was "normal" but people just didn't talk about it. Stuff like getting beat up by your mom, insulted a lot or have stuff thrown at you was pretty regular for me so I honestly didn't expect for them to be shocked lol but I'm glad it happened, now I know thats not acceptable by "regular" people... if that makes sense?? I ended up moving out at 15 but I'm always learning about how differnt other peoples lives are from my own, often for the better. In the end when the mom throws the TV after Previous previously talked about wanting an object falling on her so she could die, but with her baby in her hand she chooses to move out of the way - that was really powerful as well.
The dad didn't abuse the mom, he didn't have to, honestly. Women like her in real life allow men to hurt their children just so that they can keep the man. Just the lowest of self-esteem.
Taking advantage of someone with low self esteem IS abuse. It's not like you don't know you're manipulating them because their brain is weak. He abused her AND she was a bad person. It can be two things.
I def agree. I just find it ridiculous that Monique had to play this specific character. Playing a role like this is very taxing. Puts me in the mind of Laurence fishburne when he played Ike turner…it took several years before he was able to break away from Ike to be Morpheus in the matrix..and look at what happened to minimum and Gab after this movie…makes you think

Everyone forgets that Precious is still a child and is mean to the kid in her building so they don't come to her place where her parents are. In a weird way, she's protecting her. This movie is set in the 80's, when there were a lot myths about AIDS. Even regular doctors would say that straight people couldn't get it back then, but then you'd hear some news reporter that you could get it from touching stuff. It was an awful time.
I thought she was mean to the kid in her building because she could just be a kid with little responsibility. Precious has the weight of the world on her shoulders. She resented her for the privilege of just being a kid.

You guys really aren't scared to go outside your comfort zones with movies and that is so respectable. This movie is so rough and brutal and heartbreaking but the part that makes me cry every single time without fail is when she looks into the mirror and imagines herself as the skinny white girl. That breaks my heart 💔
Yes that's heartbreaking indeed. For me it's the scene when she yells at her teacher that nobody love her , then the teacher replies that she does love her and her baby too
And that's crazy because she was beautiful just the way she was. People have to learn to see the beauty in people. Everyone has something special in their appearance that makes the attractive. I would never want to look like someone else.

It highlights a cookie cutter nose, lips, breast, & butt mold, that's so engraved into society that everyone looks the exact same. 💯 I give props to all the beautiful people: not on the outside but the inner beauty that radiates when we embrace ourselves for who we are... with or without surgery. I wish we had the beauty that knows/says we were not created to compete with our imagination on what is considered beautiful & that theres no such thing as physical perfection: its our soul that truly pushes our outer beauty to the forefront. I've never seen such beautiful outsides that are tarnished because the rotten attitude, ungratefulness & a personality that is absolutely rotten & spoils the experience of an outwardly "pretty" person: in the same way, being blessed & presently surprised with the most beautiful aura with an not so appealing outside (in society's measurement of attractiveness). I wish we could highlight the true feelings we have about what we like & dislike about ourselves & be transparent: I think the people we put on a pedestal to set the standard has insecurities like the rest of us. That's true, but the book "The kid" follows precious son Abdul living in a Catholic orphanage and molesting small boys. Smh I could hardly finish that book. There's about 10 rapes in the book.

This is a very powerful movie. Three of my male cousins walked out the theater during that scene in the movie. It was to much for them. Im continuously impressed by the movies you guys explore.

The reason why she was so cold to that young girl is because she has little to no capacity to empathize with childhood or innocence. Precious had that stolen from her. If anything she sees her concern as fake and invasive. Especially considering how most off her interactions go, she has never been given or shown the proper tools on how to deal with emotionally vulnerable situations. She has always had to have her guard up.
But then at the end of the movie she sees the young girl again and gives her the scarf she’s wearing. Precious breaks the cycle of abuse. Probably my favorite moment from the whole film.
The Colorism in this movie is pretty rampant. I did notice you guys could tell but, Her obsession with light skin is her feeling of being ugly, which she is constantly told by her mother, and also the media and how the world all over treats darker individuals as less than. This movie went deep all over, 10/10💯 This movie deserved to win EVERY nomination.
That is how you know she did a good job as a supporting minor character. She doesn't steal the limeligh; she's doing her job. If Mariah's part was noticeable; it would mean that the rest of the movie and the cast, sucked. She blended into the background. Loved her bringing out her Long Island accent😄
She so well considering that it is so opposite from the public persona of Mariah. She got high praise for her small role. But unfortunately, her best scene is the same scene that presumably won the Oscar for Mo.
I work as a mental health therapist. I'm not saying any of my clients' names, but what I will say is that on multiple occasions, children have disclosed their molestation to me. Children even told me that their mothers' had told them it was their fault. The youngest client I remember when I was an intern (19 years ago) was 5. Her bio father stated that she "seduced" him.
I respect you so much! I thought about being a child therapist or social worker before realizing I would not be emotionally stable to handle that job cuz if I heard a father say that I would just start swinging.
People talk about Moniques performance in this but Gabby Sidibe doesn’t get enough credit. Precious is such a well written character. She’s a victim of so much abuse but she’s still tough, still has dreams, and has a wonderful sense of humor. She’s illiterate but highly intelligent with the capacity to learn. Her speech at the end is so heartbreaking because we see her go through the entire film without shedding a tear. She barely reacts to things that would break a human being & it shows the audience that Precious a strong, capable young woman who knows how to keep her head held high. It’s a wonderful performance & Gabby nails every beat. It takes a brave actress to have to act out so much trauma in one movie.
people seem to keep glossing over the fact that precious grew up with her physically abusive mom using violence any chance she could, so she did the same to others around her (like slapping the kids in her class at the beginning and at the alternative school), but we also got to see her change over time. when the kid corrected her for saying “insect” instead of “incest,” she thanked him instead of slapping him.

That movie was brutal. Gabby Sidibe was so robbed of the Oscar for best actress. For that to be her first role ever…amazing. And believe it or not, the book it’s based on is far worse in terms of the abuse and cruelty. And Mariah Carey as the social worker also put it down. She was unrecognizable. I got one for y’all, “An Imitation of Life” the 1950’s version with Lana Turner.
Yes this movie and colored girls had me crying starring Janet jackson when that guy had his small kids hanging out the window and he dropped them to their death and the mother was outside on the sidewalk in shock scrubbing their blood of the sidewalk ✌✌
I had to read this book and watch this film while going to college. And I haven’t read the book or watched the film since. I remember thinking “no one lives like this.” Then I started my career as a social worker. I’ve been a social worker for over 15 years. I found out quickly that there are more situations like this than I ever imagined possible. Thank you for reacting to this film and being so real with your reactions.
About force-feeding. My ex-boyfriend constantly told me how skinny and ugly I was, saying that if I ate more, I would be more beautiful. When I was sick and couldn't cook by myself, he fed me the fattest food that could be cooked. I believed he was doing it for the good of me. I weighed almost 70 kilograms when I realized that this was not normal. For my height, it's really a lot, I felt uncomfortable. When he left for a long time, I was able to return to a normal weight, and then make sure that he was not in my life. Forced feeding is really one of the forms of abuse.
It just hit me that when Precious's mama was talking to Mariah Carey's character, she reminded me of Penny's mother from Good Times when she tried to pretend to be a good mother and take Penny back.
I was extensively sexually abused as a child into my early teens and my ex girlfriend tricked me into going to see this movie even though I told her I was uncomfortable with these topics. It was good but it was horrible to watch. I’ll never watch it again. But I love you two so I am giving you the view.
This was the movie that got Mo'Nique her academy award. God she was terrifying in this. She was full on narcissistic. I couldn't even imagine all the unfortunate people who have to go through relationships like this. No wonder Precious dissociates and escapes reality frequently. I heard that after takes they would take breaks and comfort each other because the dialogue they had to spit at each other was so vicious.
Exactly, once was enough for me I worked at the movie theater when Precious came out. Would go and check each theater and see people's reaction to certain movies they where watching. And I tell you the whole atmosphere changed, after people saw the movie. It was sad and heavy feeling. Working at the movies, we saw movies for free. We had to wait two weeks when a movie premiere to see it for free. When I finally saw the whole movie and other people in the theater people where sad, depressed and look like they wanted to cry. I should have known better, from people mood when I would go in a check on the theater I think the book is more stuff that happened, worst stuff that happened to her than the movie
The sad part is that this shit happens all the time, every single day. There are children just like Precious, and just like Precious, their parents are just as evil and hateful.

"The level of abuse I suffered is not nearly as extreme as in the book, and there is no character in the story, not even the teacher, who is based on me." Rather, Precious is a composite character, she says, created from the real-life stories she encountered while teaching for seven years, from 1987 to 1993, in an adult-literacy programme in Harlem." So yes in some ways she goes on to tell about one of her students who told her that she was pregnant HAD gone into labor while she was in school and that she was pregnant by her father.
The boyfriend was already married messing with Precious' mom. The book goes into the other kids' trauma as well as what precious was dealing with. It's heartbreaking but it's some people's reality 😭. Great commentary guys keep up the good work.

I remember watching TV commercials back when it was coming out, and they were advertising mariah like she was going to be part of the main cast. I guess she kinda was? Totally forgot she was in it, though.

Same reason why Oprah and Tyler Perry put their names on it. They knew this was going to be potential hit because apart from it being a good movie; Mo'Nique killed it. Mariah Carey without makeup was my favorite part of this move. And she really, really, really didn't want to,do it, but Lee Daniels was a very close friend and he believed she'd be amazing. And I should add that there's not one evil thing that happened to Precious that doesn't happen to people every day. Families are really something.
I remember when she promoted the movie on Oprah she was adamant that they put makeup on her to make her look “homely.” Idk why she cares so much lol she’s still beautiful.
The scene at the end with Monique is so powerful and amazing that Mariah Carey had to turn away from the camera because she was crying. She 1000% deserved her Oscar.
Her mother instead of being there for her child and protecting her she was jealous of the attention her father was giving her instead her even if it was brutal sexual abuse. She was jealous that her father would rather touch a child then to touch her his on wife. If I remember right, Precious' father was a married man, but not to her mother. He was cheating on his wife with her mother, also sexually abusing Precious, which makes me wonder what he was doing to people in his own family or other women he was, most likely, cheating with, too. I kind of wish we got more insight to that, but then it would have taken from the main story and Precious.
My mom first saw this move the day it came out when she was 3 months pregnant with me, and named me after the actor who plays Precious( Gabourey Sidibe) I love my name it’s unique. I was born 4 months 10 days later on March 16th 2010. I’ve watched the movie myself it was extremely sad. All the actors in this were amazing. And the sad thing is, this the movie is what some child go through in their daily lives.
Monique was only paid 50,000 for this movie helping out her friend Lee Daniels. He got mad cause she didn't do any promotions for the movie and him, Oprah and Tyler Perry had her Blackballed from the industry! Lee Daniels just apologized to her and 50 cent gave her a role in one of his productions!
In the Philippines all the children who roam the streets are forced to sell flowers (sampaguitta) for they're parents drug money. When they're spotted they're usually taken in by child services (DSWD). This film reminds me that same premise. Children not asking to be born are forced into a life of suffering for they're parents sins. This is a truly heartbreaking film and even though it's not a repeat veiwing experience. Worth the pain
It's so sad to hear that about some of the children in the Philippines, it's so unfair to children who never had the choice to come into these lives with such irresponsible parents.
The mother was actually the subject of an episode of the youtube show ANALYZING EVIL which covers a lot of villains. This is one of the times when I think it would be absolutely fine to hit a woman, but when I first saw it I was too depressed and just plain SHOCKED to be angry.
Interesting how she didn’t want any money in the end she just wanted her daughter. Oh wait did I say daughter? I meant supply box to unleash her anger and rage and disgusting soul onto. She was panicking cause she realized she didn’t have a supply anymore. She is completely alone, and that’s her version of hell.
I'm impressed you all watched this movie. The sequel book "The Kid" lives free in my head. It was super depressing but explores the affect of the family trauma passed down through generations.
It’s brutal but she starts taking control and has her children. I think I was impressed that she bonded with the other girls in her class. The teacher and social worker gave her a lifeline thankfully she took it. Not that she didn’t have to do most it just having the strength to break away.
This movie also brings up the fact that adults should have it in them to do their jobs to the best of their abilities and love to do it too: her mum hated her and hated being her mother, but her teacher doing the outreach education programme loved to invest in all kinds of young people who needed help.
Monique did not get paid enough for this role. Nice reaction. Amazing film. The way they filmed the parts where she would escape from reality into her own world was genius and painted a vivid picture from her perspective.
It was a small low budget film that blew up. I remember when it came out it was hard to find at theaters. The one theaters near me showing it was packed on opening night.
Mo'nique got paid accordingly. It was a low budget movie. It wasn't until after Oprah and Tyler got involved that the movie started getting bankrolled. Mo didn't expect to be paid more but she did expect to be paid for going on promotion tours to sell the movie to award shows. Completely unrelated but when Mo'Nique said 'no' to the promotional tour; she should have stuck to her word and not try and negotiate for getting paid to promote. Because that's how Oprah and Tyler were able to blackball her.
Honestly this movie is sad especially when you realize stuff like this is actual really common in real life, but some of us like me are fortunate to not have grown up in circumstances like these. Some people got it even worse than Precious in this movie. I think it’s great they tackled this type of issue with this movie, and hopefully people who see this will try to escape and get what’s better for themselves.
To have that level of delusion, the mother probably went through at least the same thing. Which doesn't justify it at all - for Precious to connect to her own humanity is such a testament to her courage.
They explained that her own mom was neglectful but I can’t remember if it was SA. Her mom was abusive as well and a sex worker which is probably why she lets her daughter abuse her grandchild.
This is a movie you can't watch multiple times, it just drains you. Monique, who played the mom, gave the best performance anyone has seen from a comedian. That oscar is deserved. If you didn't notice, that was Mariah Carey playing the counselor, her best performance in a movie as well. And the nurse, Lenny Kravitz. The movie is amazing.
Comedians make for very good dramatic actors because a lot of them take the misery from their past and turn it into jokes. If you can get them to 'drop the act' and be raw; they can give you so much raw emotion. I once saw a bit where Bill Burr was telling jokes about his father and then he got 'real'. He was just telling a story but it his delivery was so raw and real. Whilst sympathising with him, I also thought: This guy should play dramatic roles. Just like Mo'Nique.
Precious’s classmates don’t get enough credit for helping and supporting her, especially the Caribbean girl and Joanne. I loved how they showed up when she had her baby and were there for her after she revealed she was HIV+. Back then it was a bad stigma and people wouldn’t want to be around you so the fact they were around her lending support speaks volumes. Also being around Joanne helped Precious gain her own kind of confidence and that’s what allowed her to finally stand up to her mother (in addition to the child being endangered) and believe she could have a better life.
After The Passion of the Christ, I limited my viewing of emotionally impacting films until I was ready or am in the mood. Precious is one of those movies.
I loved : the passion of the Christ Precious Broke back mountain I’ve only seen them once and will never watch them again because they were so emotionally draining.
I said I'd NEVER watch the Passion of Christ ever again but I might have to share the experience when my children get of age. Such a moving and pivotal movie for me emotionally and spiritually.
This movie made me cry; it's extremely disturbing, and sickening. when she says come take care of mommy precious. I had no idea what that meant the first time I saw it. and then someone explained it to me and I mortified. so precious has been since the they said her father started sexually abusing her at the age of three. if I remember correctly and her mother was also sexually abusing her daughter like forcing her daughter to perform oral sex on her. I just couldn't yeah and it made me even sad to find out that in the book precious ends up dying. she doesn't get a happy ending.

Precious… genuinely upsetting, but extremely powerful film. Between Precious, The Color Purple, and What’s Love Got to Do With It?…. I’m all cried out on these kinds of films.

I was a little bit conflicted about Precious mom at the end because, although what she did was horrible, it feels to me that maybe she was subjected to a similar cycle of abuse as Precious was. She was just not as strong or she didn't find a Mrs Blue in her life so she just gave up. Anyway, it was just a thought. This movie hits you so hard I don't want to go too deep into it. I need to watch some funny cheesy 80's movie urgently after this one...probably Blind Fury :D
Gabourey Sidibe deserved the Oscar over Sandra Bullock who won for The Blind Side but had more voting friends in The Academy and spent many years working in Hollywood as opposed to Gabourey. Based on the novel Push by Sapphire and a book sequel is called The Kid.
Sorry, as good as Gabourey’s performance was, she did not out act Sandra Bullock in any measure for gods sake. It is proven as she is no longer in movies at all, or many that are note worthy anyhow.
@@kristianberg4264 It is irrelevant that Sibide does not do films and Bullock has more awards and a wider body of work. She did tv with Ryan Murphy as part of his Coven series. Bullock basically made a Made for TV movie for the Big Screen and her friends gave her awards. Gabourey performance was much more comical,nuanced, and heartbreaking. Do you hear much from Oscar winner Mira Sorvino? I doubt the Asian actress will be in lots of films despite her Best Supporting recently but that is Hollywood nothing to do with talent but age, not fitting into projects. When Shelley Winters went to a casting, the writers wanted an auction and she said: Hold on. One and Two.(Meaning her Oscars) Is that audition enough?

I haven't watched ths since the weekend it premiered. My baby sister was born in 87...w the virus. She passed 6yrs b4 ths movie leaving a life that continues to shine beyond her physical presence. I watched your review today and I see it different today. I see so much impact that Precious will have in whatever time she had left. And it matters. Thank you 😊
If y’all didn’t think this movie could get any worse, it does. Precious dies and her baby boy is put into adoption and given to a family that later abuses him. He then sadly turns into an abuser himself. The books are actually a lot sadder than the movie.

Monique, I believe cried a lot on set because of the character she had to play so you can tell she put a lot into this movie and so did Gabby she played her part so well it's honestly hard for me to even watch this again.
As a person who was overly protected and sometimes abused by my late grandmother because both of my biological parents were not around, this movie hit home for me BIG TIME!!!

As shocking as this is to watch its realistic. My oldest sister was a social worker and changed her career recently because all the child abuse and neglect she saw was messing with her mental health
I always sort of symbolized the scenes with the younger girl as a metaphor for her growing up and having to turn into a woman way too fast. She is upset that she can’t be a regular girl and towards the end when you see the girl again she pushes her down to the ground, almost like this is where precious is hitting rock bottom. Then after she sees her at the welfare office, she is nice to her again because she has come to terms with her own existence. Very powerful movie.

Not sure if someone already said this but the end when Monique’s character face is lighter it was to signify that she too had AIDS like her boyfriend that died. Like to say it with out saying it because she told Precious that she didn’t have it and she was clearly in denial. But yeah that’s one of the symptoms.
M'onique was amazing in this. I own this film, but it's hard to watch.....I still haven't seen it in a few years. Can you even believe that was Mariah Carey as the counselor? She was very good here, people actually gasped in the movie theater when they saw her. Lenny Kravitz played the guy in the hospital who all the girls fawn over. Bowled over by this movie and so glad you watched it. Your comments about abusers were so on point.

I was actually shocked when looking for other peoples reactions to this movie just to see if it's something others have done and was blown away how I couldn't find a single reaction; though we might as well be the first and hopefully others will start to as well. I truly believe it's a movie everyone should see a least once.
I remember before the movie came out, most girls in my school were reading this book in 6/7th grade. We had a girl a year older than the rest of us and it was a very big secret that got out that she got pregnant her first time around in the 6th grade by an older guy (19, she was 11/12) and then when we graduated 8th grade everyone found out she was pregnant again. The second time was her mother’s boyfriend…luckily her mother didn’t blame her instead she ran him over with her car and took her to terminate it by her own choice - two years later he was killed by someone for touching their younger sister inappropriately. The original book was based on many young girls in alternative school, it’s so gruesome but sadly it IS something happening and having crossed paths with so many women now that grew up in this reality is baffling. Even more so when you are in the system and they’re evaluating you they will try to come up with career paths for you and they’re all terrible paying jobs with very small opportunities for advancement unless you decide to skip it all and go to college or into a trade but they don’t push trades for girls as much, my mother got expelled from junior high and still decided to go to school again - they wanted her to be a home health aide instead she signed up for plumbing and was one of two women in the class. Plumbing makes way more money, she saved a bit and went to college for human services and now runs a non profit and a small business.
This movie was set in the 80s and the ignorance regarding AIDS and HIV makes that scene of her saying she cant have AIDs because they never did it in the butt very real to ppls thought process ppl thought it was a gay mans disease at that time
I can relate 1000% to the "My parents/family expect random strangers to care/help more than they do themselves!" & also that having an abu$!ve neglectful mother who gaslights & railroads me for every single bad thing that happens in her life, including being reminded my whole life that the reason my mom got fat & spent her whole adult life morbidly obese was because she got pregnant with me & that's when she gained weight... 💔☠️
Tear Up Nation- In my own opinion this movie is damn good plus Monique's performance was beast but it can be a difficult to watch that deal with heavy subject matter such child abuse, sexual assault, Incest. Some issues that in the African American is rarely address which the creator of the novella wrote it to start conversation, but I still think it's a powerful movie. What’s sad is that every negative thing that happened or was mentioned in the film is actually going on somewhere in the world to various children. It’s sickening.
The author of the novel the movie was based on taught a remedial reading class in Harlem before she started writing. The character Precious was based on several girls that she actually worked with while she was teaching there.

For sure, its a really sad reality and its very hard to watch because we all know it happens, we just pretend it doesnt or at least we try not to think about it too much. I have a lot of respect for the people that choose to look at it and confront that reality in order to make change (like the people in the movie). Something I liked was that they made it clear that its a cycle, it happened to Precious' mom and so for her, it wasnt that unacceptable.
Hopefully some kids saw this and realized help is available and that you can break the cycle or like, myself - I was really surprised by their reactions to stuff that I guess I thought was "normal" but people just didn't talk about it. Stuff like getting beat up by your mom, insulted a lot or have stuff thrown at you was pretty regular for me so I honestly didn't expect for them to be shocked lol but I'm glad it happened, now I know thats not acceptable by "regular" people... if that makes sense?? I ended up moving out at 15 but I'm always learning about how differnt other peoples lives are from my own, often for the better.
In the end when the mom throws the TV after Previous previously talked about wanting an object falling on her so she could die, but with her baby in her hand she chooses to move out of the way - that was really powerful as well.

Everyone forgets that Precious is still a child and is mean to the kid in her building so they don't come to her place where her parents are. In a weird way, she's protecting her.
This movie is set in the 80's, when there were a lot myths about AIDS. Even regular doctors would say that straight people couldn't get it back then, but then you'd hear some news reporter that you could get it from touching stuff. It was an awful time.
I thought she was mean to the kid in her building because she could just be a kid with little responsibility. Precious has the weight of the world on her shoulders. She resented her for the privilege of just being a kid.
I saw their dynamic as symbolism for "hurt people hurt people."

You guys really aren't scared to go outside your comfort zones with movies and that is so respectable. This movie is so rough and brutal and heartbreaking but the part that makes me cry every single time without fail is when she looks into the mirror and imagines herself as the skinny white girl. The reason why she was so cold to that young girl is because she has little to no capacity to empathize with childhood or innocence. Precious had that stolen from her. If anything she sees her concern as fake and invasive. Especially considering how most off her interactions go, she has never been given or shown the proper tools on how to deal with emotionally vulnerable situations. She has always had to have her guard up.
She doesn't understand innocence.
She only understands Pain.
But then at the end of the movie she sees the young girl again and gives her the scarf she’s wearing. Precious breaks the cycle of abuse. Probably my favorite moment from the whole film.

I work as a mental health therapist. I'm not saying any of my clients' names, but what I will say is that on multiple occasions, children have disclosed their molestation to me. Children even told me that their mothers' had told them it was their fault.
The youngest client I remember when I was an intern (19 years ago) was 5. Her bio father stated that she "seduced" him.

People talk about Moniques performance in this but Gabby Sidibe doesn’t get enough credit. Precious is such a well written character. She’s a victim of so much abuse but she’s still tough, still has dreams, and has a wonderful sense of humor. She’s illiterate but highly intelligent with the capacity to learn. Her speech at the end is so heartbreaking because we see her go through the entire film without shedding a tear. She barely reacts to things that would break a human being & it shows the audience that Precious a strong, capable young woman who knows how to keep her head held high. It’s a wonderful performance & Gabby nails every beat. It takes a brave actress to have to act out so much trauma in one movie.
Brave?! No, it just takes a decent actress. For an actor to act its not brave....they're doing their job - and she did do it very well.

people seem to keep glossing over the fact that precious grew up with her physically abusive mom using violence any chance she could, so she did the same to others around her (like slapping the kids in her class at the beginning and at the alternative school), but we also got to see her change over time. when the kid corrected her for saying “insect” instead of “incest,” she thanked him instead of slapping him.

I had to read this book and watch this film while going to college. And I haven’t read the book or watched the film since. I remember thinking “no one lives like this.” Then I started my career as a social worker. I’ve been a social worker for over 15 years. I found out quickly that there are more situations like this than I ever imagined possible. Thank you for reacting to this film and being so real with your reactions.

About force-feeding. My ex-boyfriend constantly told me how skinny and ugly I was, saying that if I ate more, I would be more beautiful. When I was sick and couldn't cook by myself, he fed me the fattest food that could be cooked. I believed he was doing it for the good of me. I weighed almost 70 kilograms when I realized that this was not normal. For my height, it's really a lot, I felt uncomfortable. When he left for a long time, I was able to return to a normal weight, and then make sure that he was not in my life. Forced feeding is really one of the forms of abuse.
It just hit me that when Precious's mama was talking to Mariah Carey's character, she reminded me of Penny's mother from Good Times when she tried to pretend to be a good mother and take Penny back.

This was the movie that got Mo'Nique her academy award. God she was terrifying in this. She was full on narcissistic. I couldn't even imagine all the unfortunate people who have to go through relationships like this. No wonder Precious dissociates and escapes reality frequently. I heard that after takes they would take breaks and comfort each other because the dialogue they had to spit at each other was so vicious.

Would go and check each theater and see people's reaction to certain movies they where watching.
And I tell you the whole atmosphere changed, after people saw the movie. It was sad and heavy feeling.

We had to wait two weeks when a movie premiere to see it for free.
When I finally saw the whole movie and other people in the theater people where sad, depressed and look like they wanted to cry.

THIS movie is based off of a book named PUSH by an author Sapphire. HERE IS SOME OF WHAT SHE HAD TO SAY IN AN INTERVIEW ABOUT THE MOVIE.
"Speaking to the Evening Standard in her first British newspaper interview, Sapphire, who was born Ramona Lofton in Fort Ord, California, and looks significantly younger than her 59 years, is disarmingly down to earth. She describes herself as bisexual and admits to being sexually abused by her own father, a US army sergeant, at the age of eight and abandoned by her mother, a nurse, when she was 13. But the story is not autobiographical, she says. "The level of abuse I suffered is not nearly as extreme as in the book, and there is no character in the story, not even the teacher, who is based on me." Rather, Precious is a composite character, she says, created from the real-life stories she encountered while teaching for seven years, from 1987 to 1993, in an adult-literacy programme in Harlem."
So yes in some ways she goes on to tell about one of her students who told her that she was pregnant HAD gone into labor while she was in school and that she was pregnant by her father.
The boyfriend was already married messing with Precious' mom. The book goes into the other kids' trauma as well as what precious was dealing with. It's heartbreaking but it's some people's reality 😭. Great commentary guys keep up the good work.

Mariah Carey without makeup was my favorite part of this move. And she really, really, really didn't want to,do it, but Lee Daniels was a very close friend and he believed she'd be amazing. If I remember right, Precious' father was a married man, but not to her mother. He was cheating on his wife with her mother, also sexually abusing Precious, which makes me wonder what he was doing to people in his own family or other women he was, most likely, cheating with, too. I kind of wish we got more insight to that, but then it would have taken from the main story and Precious.
My mom first saw this move the day it came out when she was 3 months pregnant with me, and named me after the actor who plays Precious( Gabourey Sidibe) I love my name it’s unique.
I was born 4 months 10 days later on March 16th 2010. I’ve watched the movie myself it was extremely sad. All the actors in this were amazing. And the sad thing is, this the movie is what some child go through in their daily lives.

Monique was only paid 50,000 for this movie helping out her friend Lee Daniels. He got mad cause she didn't do any promotions for the movie and him, Oprah and Tyler Perry had her Blackballed from the industry! Lee Daniels just apologized to her and 50 cent gave her a role in one of his productions!
In the Philippines all the children who roam the streets are forced to sell flowers (sampaguitta) for they're parents drug money. When they're spotted they're usually taken in by child services (DSWD). This film reminds me that same premise. Children not asking to be born are forced into a life of suffering for they're parents sins. This is a truly heartbreaking film and even though it's not a repeat veiwing experience. Worth the pain
It's so sad to hear that about some of the children in the Philippines, it's so unfair to children who never had the choice to come into these lives with such irresponsible parents.
I know it's not supposed to be funny but I died laughing when he was like “ you can tell it's normal because the cat didn't freak out”
The mother was actually the subject of an episode of the youtube show ANALYZING EVIL which covers a lot of villains. This is one of the times when I think it would be absolutely fine to hit a woman, but when I first saw it I was too depressed and just plain SHOCKED to be angry.

She was panicking cause she realized she didn’t have a supply anymore. She is completely alone, and that’s her version of hell.
I'm impressed you all watched this movie. The sequel book "The Kid" lives free in my head. It was super depressing but explores the affect of the family trauma passed down through generations.
I cannot get over that book.

I think I was impressed that she bonded with the other girls in her class. The teacher and social worker gave her a lifeline thankfully she took it. Not that she didn’t have to do most it just having the strength to break away.
Read the follow up book its repulsive...and sad, heartbreaking...it make you think about sexual abuse survivors and perpetrators

This movie also brings up the fact that adults should have it in them to do their jobs to the best of their abilities and love to do it too: her mum hated her and hated being her mother, but her teacher doing the outreach education programme loved to invest in all kinds of young people who needed help.

I have never been able to watch this movie twice. I remember seeing it in theaters. A roomful of grown folks doing the ugly cry. This was heavy.
Monique did not get paid enough for this role. Nice reaction. Amazing film. The way they filmed the parts where she would escape from reality into her own world was genius and painted a vivid picture from her perspective.
It was a small low budget film that blew up. I remember when it came out it was hard to find at theaters. The one theaters near me showing it was packed on opening night.

Mo'nique got paid accordingly. It was a low budget movie. It wasn't until after Oprah and Tyler got involved that the movie started getting bankrolled. Mo didn't expect to be paid more but she did expect to be paid for going on promotion tours to sell the movie to award shows. Completely unrelated but when Mo'Nique said 'no' to the promotional tour; she should have stuck to her word and not try and negotiate for getting paid to promote. Because that's how Oprah and Tyler were able to blackball her.
The truly horrific aspect of this film is how often these situations occur in the real world.
Monique and Gabby absolutely eat these roles alive.
Honestly this movie is sad especially when you realize stuff like this is actual really common in real life, but some of us like me are fortunate to not have grown up in circumstances like these. Some people got it even worse than Precious in this movie. I think it’s great they tackled this type of issue with this movie, and hopefully people who see this will try to escape and get what’s better for themselves.
To have that level of delusion, the mother probably went through at least the same thing. Which doesn't justify it at all - for Precious to connect to her own humanity is such a testament to her courage.
They explained that her own mom was neglectful but I can’t remember if it was SA. Her mom was abusive as well and a sex worker which is probably why she lets her daughter abuse her grandchild.
This is a movie you can't watch multiple times, it just drains you. Monique, who played the mom, gave the best performance anyone has seen from a comedian. That oscar is deserved. If you didn't notice, that was Mariah Carey playing the counselor, her best performance in a movie as well. And the nurse, Lenny Kravitz. The movie is amazing.
Comedians make for very good dramatic actors because a lot of them take the misery from their past and turn it into jokes. If you can get them to 'drop the act' and be raw; they can give you so much raw emotion. I once saw a bit where Bill Burr was telling jokes about his father and then he got 'real'. He was just telling a story but it his delivery was so raw and real. Whilst sympathising with him, I also thought: This guy should play dramatic roles. Just like Mo'Nique.

Precious’s classmates don’t get enough credit for helping and supporting her, especially the Caribbean girl and Joanne. I loved how they showed up when she had her baby and were there for her after she revealed she was HIV+. Back then it was a bad stigma and people wouldn’t want to be around you so the fact they were around her lending support speaks volumes. Also being around Joanne helped Precious gain her own kind of confidence and that’s what allowed her to finally stand up to her mother (in addition to the child being endangered) and believe she could have a better life.

After The Passion of the Christ, I limited my viewing of emotionally impacting films until I was ready or am in the mood. Precious is one of those movies.

I said I'd NEVER watch the Passion of Christ ever again but I might have to share the experience when my children get of age. Such a moving and pivotal movie for me emotionally and spiritually.
This movie made me cry; it's extremely disturbing, and sickening. when she says come take care of mommy precious. I had no idea what that meant the first time I saw it. and then someone explained it to me and I mortified. so precious has been since the they said her father started sexually abusing her at the age of three. if I remember correctly and her mother was also sexually abusing her daughter like forcing her daughter to perform oral sex on her. I just couldn't yeah and it made me even sad to find out that in the book precious ends up dying. she doesn't get a happy ending.

I was a little bit conflicted about Precious mom at the end because, although what she did was horrible, it feels to me that maybe she was subjected to a similar cycle of abuse as Precious was. She was just not as strong or she didn't find a Mrs Blue in her life so she just gave up. Anyway, it was just a thought. This movie hits you so hard I don't want to go too deep into it. I need to watch some funny cheesy 80's movie urgently after this one...probably Blind Fury :D

Gabourey Sidibe deserved the Oscar over Sandra Bullock who won for The Blind Side but had more voting friends in The Academy and spent many years working in Hollywood as opposed to Gabourey. Based on the novel Push by Sapphire and a book sequel is called The Kid.
Sorry, as good as Gabourey’s performance was, she did not out act Sandra Bullock in any measure for gods sake. It is proven as she is no longer in movies at all, or many that are note worthy anyhow.
@@kristianberg4264 It is irrelevant that Sibide does not do films and Bullock has more awards and a wider body of work. She did tv with Ryan Murphy as part of his Coven series. Bullock basically made a Made for TV movie for the Big Screen and her friends gave her awards. Gabourey performance was much more comical,nuanced, and heartbreaking. Do you hear much from Oscar winner Mira Sorvino? I doubt the Asian actress will be in lots of films despite her Best Supporting recently but that is Hollywood nothing to do with talent but age, not fitting into projects. When Shelley Winters went to a casting, the writers wanted an auction and she said: Hold on. One and Two.(Meaning her Oscars) Is that audition enough?

Mo'Nique, Gabby Sidibe and Mariah Carey all nailed that last scene. So disturbing, so painful to watch, yet so well acted from all three of them.
I haven't watched ths since the weekend it premiered. My baby sister was born in 87...w the virus. She passed 6yrs b4 ths movie leaving a life that continues to shine beyond her physical presence. If y’all didn’t think this movie could get any worse, it does. Precious dies and her baby boy is put into adoption and given to a family that later abuses him. He then sadly turns into an abuser himself. The books are actually a lot sadder than the movie.

I was like 😬 when I saw that you guys were reacting to this one lol it is hard to watch but such a well-made movie. I only watched it once and that was enough for me 😭. Monique did an amazing job in this film. Playing a narcissistic abusive mother...you see she starts to panic at the end because she's losing her supply. Typical!

If you read the book, Precious is very smart. She does a detailed analysis of how much a person makes if they work while on assistance.
As shocking as this is to watch its realistic. My oldest sister was a social worker and changed her career recently because all the child abuse and neglect she saw was messing with her mental health
I always sort of symbolized the scenes with the younger girl as a metaphor for her growing up and having to turn into a woman way too fast. She is upset that she can’t be a regular girl and towards the end when you see the girl again she pushes her down to the ground, almost like this is where precious is hitting rock bottom. Then after she sees her at the welfare office, she is nice to her again because she has come to terms with her own existence. Very powerful movie.
She rather be on her own then being with an abusive sadistic mother who never cared for her.

Not sure if someone already said this but the end when Monique’s character face is lighter it was to signify that she too had AIDS like her boyfriend that died. Like to say it with out saying it because she told Precious that she didn’t have it and she was clearly in denial. But yeah that’s one of the symptoms.
M'onique was amazing in this. I own this film, but it's hard to watch.....I still haven't seen it in a few years. Can you even believe that was Mariah Carey as the counselor? She was very good here, people actually gasped in the movie theater when they saw her. Lenny Kravitz played the guy in the hospital who all the girls fawn over. Bowled over by this movie and so glad you watched it. Your comments about abusers were so on point.
Precious's violence is unfortunately the cycle that is created. It is the strongest language she knows.
You guys should watch The Secret Life of Bees. It's a great movie and Queen Latifah and Jennifer Hudson are in it.

I was actually shocked when looking for other peoples reactions to this movie just to see if it's something others have done and was blown away how I couldn't find a single reaction; though we might as well be the first and hopefully others will start to as well. I truly believe it's a movie everyone should see a least once.

I remember before the movie came out, most girls in my school were reading this book in 6/7th grade. We had a girl a year older than the rest of us and it was a very big secret that got out that she got pregnant her first time around in the 6th grade by an older guy (19, she was 11/12) and then when we graduated 8th grade everyone found out she was pregnant again. The second time was her mother’s boyfriend…luckily her mother didn’t blame her instead she ran him over with her car and took her to terminate it by her own choice - two years later he was killed by someone for touching their younger sister inappropriately. The original book was based on many young girls in alternative school, it’s so gruesome but sadly it IS something happening and having crossed paths with so many women now that grew up in this reality is baffling.
Even more so when you are in the system and they’re evaluating you they will try to come up with career paths for you and they’re all terrible paying jobs with very small opportunities for advancement unless you decide to skip it all and go to college or into a trade but they don’t push trades for girls as much, my mother got expelled from junior high and still decided to go to school again - they wanted her to be a home health aide instead she signed up for plumbing and was one of two women in the class. Plumbing makes way more money, she saved a bit and went to college for human services and now runs a non profit and a small business.
Note: Precious is a math genius!
This movie was set in the 80s and the ignorance regarding AIDS and HIV makes that scene of her saying she cant have AIDs because they never did it in the butt very real to ppls thought process ppl thought it was a gay mans disease at that time
I can relate 1000% to the "My parents/family expect random strangers to care/help more than they do themselves!" & also that having an abu$!ve neglectful mother who gaslights & railroads me for every single bad thing that happens in her life, including being reminded my whole life that the reason my mom got fat & spent her whole adult life morbidly obese was because she got pregnant with me & that's when she gained weight... 💔☠️
Tear Up Nation- In my own opinion this movie is damn good plus Monique's performance was beast but it can be a difficult to watch that deal with heavy subject matter such child abuse, sexual assault, Incest. Some issues that in the African American is rarely address which the creator of the novella wrote it to start conversation, but I still think it's a powerful movie.
