I love free trade between nations. It benefits both participants. But free trade cannot have a higher priority than national survival. Americans can trade freely because other people provided our freedom, so obviously individuals and companies should be self-restrained when it comes to trade with nations who seek to undermine the US and treat their own people as serfs at best.
Most American companies and citizens will not refrain from trading and investing in China. It is naive to believe that when they have an opportunity to enrich themselves at the expense of others and their own country they will refrain from it. Even if the government creates laws to protect America from the CCP, without severe penalties and long jail sentences, some will still attempt to evade American law to enrich themselves.
We should also worry about what we don't understand and underestimate about Russia
