Run up is the distance between the gate and the pole where the race is timed from. In the Preakness of 1973, the cable to the timer broke - probably from people walking over it. The official hand timer of Pimlico timed the race from there and got 1:55.00. Bill Nack noticed that the official timer, was not in the correct position to see exactly when the colts hit the first pole, therefore Secretariat, it was assumed, to have not broken the track record. The Daily Racing Form used their own clocker, which was 1:53.25. They indicated on the Form the new track record. In 2012 finally, the race was officially forensically timed. Secretariat was 2 lengths in front of Canyonero who clocked in at 1:54.00. Officially, now as you know Secretariat's time is 1:53 FLAT.
Great summary on this WF. In the 1989 Preakness you will see the time was a bit over this and they mention it is not the record. They are still referring to the older "record" and not Secretariat's real time of the 1:53 FLAT. Just interesting to note.
@@Judy28115 Thank you! Imagine back in 1973 if they correctly timed his race? The level of awe over what Secretariat did, would have resounded louder than we could imagine. At the running of Slew's Preakness, he held the record for a time (although in reality, no one knew he didn't).
Jay you and I are on the same page.... this was quite the effort from Forte. Although I have made his Fountain of Youth and Florida Derby signs for Pletcher, I think this may have taken a lot of his energy, we will see. He is a very good horse and may prove that he is spectacular if he wins the Derby. Now if Angel of Empire pulls it off being the half brother to my filly, her stock will go even higher. We will see,,,, knowing the Derby it just may be another we have not discussed. Mage looked good too.
Hi Jay, loved this breakdown of the FD. I have to say I was extremely impressed with Forte's run & his fortitude in pulling this off. He does have 5 weeks to recover. The question remains, will he be at his best on that first Saturday in May? Another race to note is Pletcher's other horse KingsBarns who won the LD staying in the lead for the entire run. It looked great, he did a great job and so on. However, I'm not happy with the splits ~ you can see they are a full 4.6 seconds slower at the 3/4s pole than I want to see for a derby horse. Excited to watch the upcoming Santa Anita!! Considering a share in Wicked Desire as well. ~ Judy in NC
Great video, Jay. My concern about Forte is this: He showed guts but looking at him in the post parade, he is whippet thin even before this race. I wonder if this FL derby effort plus him being a bit too far on the lean side will put him behind the 8 ball for the Derby. Several horses this year that are similar in talent; a tough year to choose the winner!
C'mon Jay, you know dang well as a trainer that 5 weeks is way more than enough time to recover after a race. It's actually a week to a week and a half more than the normal time between races for a horse, you know that. It's not that dramatic.. It's probably a week to long actually.. running back in 4 weeks or less is the norm..
I'm sure that's what Pletcher and company are thinking too but Angel of Empire has the same 5 weeks. Also, it's not necessarily the physical exhaustion. That extreme fatigue can open the door to injury.
Interesting video. Go Forte. "Run-up is the distance traveled before the timing of the race begins. It gives horses a running start." .. so, how does anyone know when a horse has reached his running start? 50 feet? 70 feet. How could any clocker or timer know when horses are fully up to speed? I guess running starts are different for each race track. That would make a difference.
Congratulations on the second place finish!! See you at the Races my friend!! I wouldn't answer as I already won a mug!! LOL 😂 Hello Cynci!! I hope you both have a safe but wonderful Easter!! Look, I'm a gambler, I want to make money, and I know Forte is going to win!! but I need the exacta or the Tri, so I need for all of you guys to help me out!! so we can make money!!

I like the background you used for this video.
Hi Jay, Jose Torrealba here. The run up is the distance traveled from the gate to where the timing of the race begins.
Excited for my boy Mage! Improving every race!
I have 3 horses, but now 4! My number one horse was Cigar, then Tiz Now, then Justify, and now Forte!!
Thanks for the great commentary! I really like Angel, so eager to see that video!
No one is going to beat Forte, he's a super horse, and that kind of horse comes every 10 to 20 years!!

Fingers crossed for your filly and her sibling. Cynci and I have Classical Romance by CE and a yearling colt by him as well.

HI Judy. Seems like the times have been slower in most of these races than you'd expect from horses of this caliber. Or is it just me? LOL

distance between the starting gate and where the timing starts
Run up is the distance between the placement of the starting gate and the duration of the race

What do you think of the Japanese horses this year coming over to run in the derby?

Sorry Dan, you are correct but according to UA-cam Troy posted first.
