Vera-Ellen Tries To Get Perry Como To Dance!

  • Because of his "Mr. Relaxation" persona/moniker, Perry Como was good-naturedly ribbed throughout his career by showbiz personalities, with the zenith of the jests perhaps being SCTV's "Perry Como: Still Alive" skit in the early eighties, featuring a semi-comatose Eugene Levy crooning his way through songs. But when it came to lampooning Como's laid-back image no one was more proficient at it than Como himself. He beat the SCTV lampooners to the punch over two decades earlier by portraying himself falling asleep in the middle of his own TV show! (see the end of the "Kewpie Doll" video I've posted).
Here, from 1956, we have another example of Como having some fun with his image. In order to get out of dancing, he sends in another dancer (the show's choreographer, Louis DaPron) to take his place. Meanwhile, Mr. Como relegates himself to a rocking chair onstage and yawns through the performance!
Sorry about the less-than-stellar video quality; gotta settle for what's available with some of these early clips.

Vera Ellen was the best female dancer in Hollywood. No other female dancer could do ballet, tap, jazz dancing, and all the rest with such style grace and athletic power! She was the best indeed.

This was telecast in 1956. A year later she appeared, looking run down, with Tony Martin in a bland musical set in Scotland... and that was it, curtains, the end of her screen career. Ahead lay arthritis, her only child's cot death, divorce and years of cancer.
Ruby Keeler finished with 'Colleen', her best dancing; Ginger brushed up her technique for 'The Barkleys of Broadway'. Cyd closed as a dancer with 'Silk Stockings', Eleanor Powell with the idiosyncratic but funky 'Sensations'. All poor Vera-Ellen got was an insipid, instantly forgettable British effort, barely distributed Stateside. Life is cruel.
"I'm retired. I stopped when I was ahead. I don't need my work anymore, and I don't need the applause." (1977).
      RIP.

@@esmeephillips5888 Cyd danced two numbers in Party Girl which came after Silk Stockings. Party Girl was Cyd's last at MGM. Cyd also danced in a few other lesser films in the 60s such as the spy film she appeared in with Dean Martin. I agree with your assessment of Vera in her last film with Tony Martin..it did not present her in the best light except for the finale where she danced very well.

@@jackanthony976 I forgot she danced in 'Party Girl', though it was about the only movie where she showed acting ability. What I meant was that 'Silk Stockings' was Cyd's last starring role as a dancer first and foremost.

Such a pleasure to see Vera Ellen dance :) one of the greatest brilliant dancer to ever be on the dance floor. who put her heart and soul gave it her all. She was a superb performer on stage. It was nice to hear Vera sing with her own voice for a change. Am so glad she met Perry Como. He was a funny talented show host and had a great voice. I enjoyed this clip so much. It touch my heart. Thanks for sharing. Her legacy will always live on for years to come.

That's true. However, she was in the last legs of her career in this clip. Her movie career was virtually over by this time and she literally disappeared from the public in the 60's.

@JACK ANTHONY To be the fair she had opportunities to keep performing. The only reason she quit Hollywood was cause of the death of her daughter. If that hadn’t happened she would have continued to perform long after this.

I would like to add to these wonderful clips from yesteryear. I had the honor of studying with Louis DaPron as a young dancer myself. I started dancing as a child taking lessons from another dancer who herself worked as a child in many of the Peggy Ryan-Donald O'Connor movies, Choreographed by Mr. DaPron.
The last time I saw Vera Ellen was shortly before her passing taking a ballet class in Hollywood. You couldn't miss that great leg extention she still had long into her retirement.

Even though Mr. Como got her name wrong.. this was on Feb. 18, 1956 [she was 35]. You'll notice her dance partner, Louis Da Pron, was outta breath, but she was still doing HIGH kicks, and continued to sing with Perry w/o any hint of heavy breathing. She, also, appeared on his show again on his Thanksgiving show in 1958, dancing, and singing to, "Shall We Dance". I don't think this is on You Tube, etc. Too bad, because GREAT composer, Harry Warren was on that show, too.

Perry at this time felt threatened by Miss Vera Ellen as she was a much bigger star than him in 1956. Vera danced and acted in quite a few lavish technicolor films while Perry's film career fizzled quite quickly and therefore he was relegated to doing a weekly black and white TV show. I think he mispronounced her name intentionally.

@@jackjules7552 This is a ridiculous statement and effort to pit two great stars against each other. Perry Como was a huge star in 1956. He was already famous as a singer and his TV show was a nationwide institution. He was seen by millions of people weekly, people who also bought his records. He was never "relegated" to anything, and you must be one of the few people in the world capable of hating on Perry Como.

Most choreographers prefer not to exhibit their own skills (if only because they think they are past it) but Louis DaPron was always ready to do a bit of support hoofing or play a straight man, in pictures as well as on the tube.
He has a bit in 'Funny Lady' as a choreographer, 20 years after this.

About the two minute mark, Perry brings out his choreographer Louis DaPron to dance with Vera Ellen. Young people won't know much -- if anything -- about DaPron but he was, as you can see in this clip, a fine dancer in his own right
About a decade earlier, he did a scene with Donald O'Connor and Lew Parker (later to be Marlo Thomas's dad in That Girl) and you can see how great he really was. He was, in fact, O'Connor's dance instructor at one point.
Here's the clip with O'Connor and Parker. DePron comes in at the 1:45 mark. He's playing the bartender who comes out to join in the dance
