"Like the time I ran away. Turned around and You were standing next to me." God? The most spiritual song I have ever heard. After 48 years I still get chills and tears hearing it. It bears hearing regularly.Thank you.
I end up in tears every single time. Hits me in my core.
When I saw them play this Live in 1977 right when he sang those lines the couple in front of me pulled together tightly. I still have not forgotten that moment.

I have heard some people say they don't particularly enjoy this album. I think that's because a lot of the instrumentation is overwhelming. Steve Howe's steel guitar, the pipe organ on parallels, some of the heavy synth. I love all those things the way they are used on this album. But to some people it is a sensory overload.

Jon Anderson, the singer, would be very happy to hear about what you are visualizing when you hear this. I think his goal was to utilize the power of rock as a 'spiritualizing' force that could elevate the listener into a higher state. It is what I call 'exuberant fury' and there is no other rock band that delivers such a powerful sense of JOY. Most rock bands take a path of darker aggression or emotional angst. YES bravely brought us somewhere beautiful. The lyrics for me seem inspired by a branch of Buddhism that deals with the Eternal Present, where one may, in deep states of meditation touch upon 'universal consciousness ' or what was once termed 'cosmic consciousness" the phrase : "Awaken gentle mass touch" is a repeating refrain that to me suggests that humanity's awakening is a subtle wave that washes over and transforms all, not a sudden lightening bolt out of a blue sky, which is what that piano intro is like. Such a jolt can startle us awake but it doesn't linger and we fall asleep again.
The verses towards the end seem to be blessings bestowed upon four different forces of creation, master of images
master of soul
master of light master of time.
But the lyrical conclusion is for me, one of the most sublime spiritual statements, and expresses something that we ALL sense within ourselves.."like the time I ran away, turned around and you were standing close to me.." This encapsulates our relationship to the divine beautifully. We flee from our origins, we flee from our parents, we even flee from those we love the most, we flee from love, we flee from God...but we are really just running from ourselves. We finally stop, and turn around, and there is the Divine staring back at us because it never leaves us.. this is really all we need to know, forget religious rhetoric and dogmatic old doctrines, YES is here!!
Love this. Am in my 6th decade here on planet Earth and just realizing now the power of this band's music and words. Trancsends so much. Cheers.
I saw them on this tour and indeed they performed this beautifully. It was an outdoor show and just when Jon sang the 2nd "wish the sun to stand still" the last rays of the setting sun coming over the back wall were just hitting the stage - absolutely amazing moment.

The main line for me is "Workings of man, set to ply out historical life, re-regaining the flower of the fruit of his tree, all awakening all restoring you, workings of man,
crying out from the fire stet aflame, by his blindness, to see, that the warmth of his being, is promised for his seeing, his reaching so clearly" to me Jon writes in
a condensed way that speaks to broad questions about life, and the after life. Jon is saying to me, our actions matter, and our real aim is to "Love one Another".

Awaken is the singer's favorite Yes song. he feels that it has everything that Yes is about, and playing it live is a magical experience for him. I've seen them do this live many times, maybe the best was the Union tour version. Every song on that album is amazing, check out Wonderous Stories and Turn Of The Century from it.
The best live version of the song in my opinion was Jon Anderson with Todmobile, Magical rendition of Awaken with a full orchestral accompaniment including choral and rock band as well…

Harri, a live version of this from a concert is even greater and the keyboards and singng, guitar etc, even better if that's possible, it is an amazing track with people always moved by it. I think you would really like the shorter tracks of Rick Wakeman too from his much-liked '6 Wives of Henry 8th'.

This was the most incredible ever.( especially in 2001).
I've seen them 34 times from 1973 to 2013 I think my favorite would have to be Union tour 1991
@@sdholmess The best Live Awaken is either 1977, 1978 - In The Round, 1979 - In The Round. Nothing after 6/30/79 last show of the Tormato tour comes close. I was at 6/30/79 Hollywood, FL. 1991 Awaken In the Round was a miracle, but not in the same universe as 1977, 1978 or 1979!
@@yesshows100 I got that one beat ripples I saw them in 1991 in Los Angeles. A couple of years later I read an article in YES magazine by Jon Anderson. He mentioned the LA Forum performance of Awaken. He said a light came through the ceiling he was shaking all over he said it was the greatest musical experience of his entire career!
Jon Anderson's lyrics are like word paintings and, as he has described it, are sometimes more about the right sounds and rhythms. For example, in this song he sings "Awaken gentle mass touch" which I think gets to the same thing as "People all over the world, join hands, start a love train." So his lyrics can be a challenge, you have to find your own way with a lot of them, but that is what makes them so interesting and rewarding. They are also ambiguous enough to have different meanings at different times in your life and so revisiting them over the years makes each listening it's own journey. The same goes for the music, of course, but as you said, you know about that. :D

the recording of the church organ was truly amazing.....wakeman was in a church 10 miles from the recording studio and the organ was recorded over TELEPHONE lines back to the studio.....just something unreal
Are you sure they didn't mean a 'line' which refers to a D.I. box joined to a long cable cluster to a mixing console far away?? I have a hard time believing in the phone story, unless the other musicians had to use the phone signal to play to because they couldn't get the playback through the mixer?? But surely not as the actual source track, that would be horrible. You have got me curious now, Lol...
@@markjohnson4217 If you get a chance, ask Mr. Wakeman. They ran a line miles away from where they were to the studio in order to utilize an actual church pipe organ, I believe some 7 miles away (no digital sampling in those days). The cable ran along phone lines to the location of the church. Phone lines were not used.
@@markjohnson4217 No, this is a case of how much better 'phone technology *could* be in the 1970s than the "bare minimum for speech to be intelligible" that was made available to most customers. Some European countries/telcos provided high bandwidth, low-noise lines that were available for business use, either as a permanent private line (expensive!) or for minute-by-minute or hour-by-hour hire (just like a normal telephone line - though you had to have the relevant high-quality equipment installed at both ends of the connection first!).

@@markjohnson4217 no, it was the standard Swiss telephone line. It saved recording it to analogue tape, then downloading to the desk & trying to mix it in. He was in St Martin's Church Vevey, about 4 miles rom Montreux & the Mountain Studio. It meant that he could play & respond as though he was just in another part of the studio building..
I've never heard the bit about them laying in extra cables, which would presumably have required extra boosters at intervals. As I recall, it was just a standard high quality line, as used by businesses for data transmission [ ISDN? I'm not an electronics /telecoms engineer ].
I was a huge Progressive Rock Fan! Yes and Emerson, Lake & Palmer were my favorites! I remember "backintheday" decorating my Christmas tree while listening to Roundabout LP over and over~great memories! Thanks for this Harri ~my best to you :)

Seeing them do this live is a spiritual experience. I love their album "Tales From Topographic Oceans" you should check out that album. I've seen them do three of the four songs on that album live. Now that's an experience. They were a band to see back in the day. I saw them many times. It's really a shame their not together anymore.

An absolutely masterful performance by Rick Wakeman on keyboards. And Jon Anderson 's voice has always been brilliant enough to stand up to Wakeman.
That's the essence of Yes. Highly talented musicians who shared the studio and stage. Each was freaking brilliant but they knew how to share the music. And their harmonies are always perfect.
Harri Chris Squire, the bass player was asked what Jon Anderson was meaning and Chris said Does anyone really know? Its God's work is the best way to describe Chris and the band.
In my opinion, you have now reacted to the pinnacle of Yes. As you know, they have other great tracks, particularly Close To The Edge and The Gates of Delirium. But for me, this is their Epiphany piece.
When you can, give this another listen all the way through without pausing, Harri. Everything *flows*; you'll barely notice the transitions from meditative to rocking and back, until you're midway in to a different section.

@@joelliebler5690 , those are all fantastic tracks, but for me, especially when played as an album side with Wondrous Stories, since I believe the narrative of the two belong together, Wondrous Stories and Awaken together are the pinnacle.
You are very, very correct in your opinion. This is their best. This is the best song ever. I also think Gentle Giant is the only group that can compete with them.

Absolutely spiritual. I always felt it was "awakening" to the higher power. BTW, I've seen this live a few times, and it is incredible. Wakeman doing hand over hand playing on multiple keyboards. Probably some midi stuff to get the choir in there. Listen to his Journey to the Center of the Earth, and you'll hear his choir samples . . . Thinking he brought them forward into Awaken. They are all fantastic. I love this song, and have been listening to it since it was released. Thanks for reacting - you were spot on!
You were corect this sounds like church. The main organ elements were recorded in a church in Switzerland, with Wakeman, the keyboardist going to town on the church's pipe organ.

Saw this front row in Germany on their Union tour. They nailed it. I loved the song before, and after, well, it just became of part of me. Truly special piece of art.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching you experience and comment on Awaken. I saw this incarnation of the band many times since the early 70s (Close to the Edge Tour) and met several of them one on one. They moved me deeply into the Prog Rock world. You picked a great song for your 1st experience with this band. You might try to pull up the lyrics and read thru them while playing the song. Jon Anderson is deeply spiritual in a very human way. I look forward to seeing more of your "First Listens"

When I listened to this, I felt as if I had dived underwater to the very bottom, where I saw an underwater opera, there on the stage stood the wizard John Anderson who was trying to tell me something, a wonderful dream. I just listened to classical music remade in a modern way , wonderful, now few people perform such music, a big like for the group YES!
Love your enthusiasm! Have a listen to And you I by Yes. The live version during their concert at the Montreux Jazz festival, on UA-cam, is particularly good. I think you'd enjoy it.
One of my all-time favorites from the band who did more to shape my musical tastes than any other. This song is practically the definition of "Progressive Rock". High vibration go on! :D

Always second hand information with sparse description that only an older brother could condense to five words… Best Show I Ever Saw!!! I knew it was profound… he never went beyond two words. I think the census is in… although I was not a participant in the live experience, I was only a little younger and I made up for that with great artists peppered everywhere of natural evolution on simple means… I’m grateful for my musical timeline and can’t relive it enough through someone else’s eyes such as yours and others. Almost feels illegal… and like you… I don’t think I could journey through my life without music ie… it’s a ride you can enjoy hopefully until. This particular tour was one of my Yes concerts, and they nailed it live. Jon Anderson is an angel come to Earth. All their long songs are worth a few hundred listens. Great review. Cheers.

Yes played all their music live...no sheet music! But - sometimes you didn't got a totally note-for-note rendition of the album or track...but you were blessed to get an interpretation, a spontaneity, and a difference that exceeded the album - because it may never be repeated again, anywhere!
Lyrically this song is essentially “Close to the Edge 2.0”. It follows the same plot. The narrator begins in an unfulfilled state, he seeks fulfillment, then he meditates, then he finds the answers he was looking for. And the lyrics are purposely vague enough that you can apply the narrative to anything that suits you. That’s why everyone has a slightly different interpretation.

You have to hear "South Sure of the Sky". It's another masterpiece by Yes. And there's a live version of this with just Jon, backed by the astounding Icelandic band Todmobile. You'll crap your pants.
Harri. Seen this band numerous times and this particular song. Superb musicianship. They didn't need song sheets on stage. Rick Wakeman is the keyboardist, Jon Anderson the lead singer. Steve Howe on guitar is magnificent and Chris Squire the bassist RIP. Great band
Steve Howe is a guitar players', guitar player. He is a consummate guitar player with a myriad of styles and textures. He is one of my all time favorites, and yes, I'm a guitar player.
Turn of the Century, a song from this very same album, should be your next listen! It has a similar musical vibe as Awaken.

Enjoyed your take on this YES classic. Reaction videos have become a bit cliche but yours seemed fresh and genuine. Listening to most YES tunes, especially for the first time and especially something like Awaken, is a heavy lift. Don't worry about not understanding the lyrics, think of them more as abstract paintings. YES was/is a unique combination of immense musical talent and unabashed swagger to twist and mix genres. Fortunately, it's funneled through the positive cosmic spirituality of Jon Anderson and somehow elicits these waves of emotion from listeners. I've heard this song since it came out and still found myself sitting at my desk with tears in my eyes. Music is a powerful tool in the right hands.
Was lucky enough to see them perform this in Minneapolis back in 02. Wakeman was in top form. Absolutely breathtaking. My favorite band.

Back in 1991 just prior to the union tour a colleague heard me saying that I was going to see them at the Wembley Arena and said he'd never heard of them and who were they like. I replied "nobody" Although they have inspired other bands. (Geddy Lee is on record as saying that Rush wouldn't have existed if it wasn't for Yes) there's no other Band like Yes.

This is one of my favorite songs by my favorite group. There are some great live versions, but one of the best is when the lead singer, Jon Anderson, teamed up with Toddmobile to perform Awaken. It's a terrific performance.

Yes was a love 'em or hate 'em type of group back then. You either got it or you didn't. I had plenty of friends in college that hated them (lyrics made no sense or doesn't have a steady beat). The lyrics were like abstract art/poetry. You develop your interpretation after listening many times. Yes is mainly a listening experience.

Saw them perform this at the Historic State Theater in Minneapolis back in 02 and it was incredible. This and Don't Kill the Whale were high points for me. Going For the One is their masterpiece. I find most of Anderson's lyrics opaque but I'm generally left with an impression of positivity, light, clarity, spirituality without religion.
Exactly right. Yes music (and the lyrics go with the music) is always very positive and uplifting. They are saying that there is always a path out of chaos into order, out of darkness in to the light. I suppose the clue is in the band's name.
'How are they gunna do this live...' Those were the days before computers, they had to play it live to record it, with some over dubbing. The absolute best live version of this song is Jon Anderson with Todmobile in Iceland. Orchestra, choir, great sound and video. An amazing performance.
I was right there man
The live version seems to be a fan favorite, but I like this version, better. It's very hard to get everything from a song like this into a live concert, as you said. This to me was the pinnacle of their career. Even though it's hard to separate out one great one from another.
You should check out Jon Anderson and Todmobile perform Awaken live with full orchestra and choir, it is actually much more powerful than the studio version, although Rick wasn't part of it, it still achieved that 'magic zone' of devastating power!! check it out.
Funny. I always though the opposite. I heard the studio version after hearing several live versions, and to me the studio versions lacks the power and crispness of live versions. To me it sounds muddy and weak.
I've seen it live five times. The bass pedals beat you in the chest. But I love the sound of the Organ from St Martin's Cathedral. It just has a little more Magic than the electronic equipment Rick carried with him on stage. I loved all the live versions I saw though.
It's about the search for God.
You should listen to this and Wonderous Stories together. One of the things that all of these reaction channels are missing is the order that each song appears on the album. Much of the music was written to be listened to in its entirety, or at least an album side; especially with Progressive rock. They didn't just write songs and put them on an album. They created an album, an experience; an experience that you will never fully appreciate until you listen to the entire album.
As amazing as 'Awaken' is, it's even better when you listen to the entire album. There's a reason it's the last piece of music on the album.
It's all done with a purpose, or as a YES lyric said... 'Disjointed... but with purpose'
Lovely to hear someone react so cleanly and honestly to the music. It's true that the instrumental music carries much of the message of the song - true about most YES music. There are many good suggestions of other YES songs you might enjoy and I believe they all have their place. For a similar spiritual experience I'd suggest the song that precedes Awaken on this album entitled "Wondrous Stories," then "To Be Over" from the Relayer album, "Close to the Edge" from the album of the same name, and "Homeworld" from the album The Ladder. There are other great songs with different feels: "Roundabout," "Sound Chaser," "Ritual," "Perpetual Change," .... the list is long. Thanks for the wonderful comments and video.

He was considered one of highly popular Stars of this Era. This movie is huge in the genre of movie romance / like Home Alone is huge to Christmas movies.

The Indian music, which you also listen to, has more affinity with God than this music. This music is like exploring deep space, akin to out of body experience, in a way enjoying the fruits of labour of God from space to this world, so there is still a tenuous link to God. In Hinduism emphasis is placed more from within than without when seeking for spiritual growth.
