    Part 2 of 7 - Mixing with compression means understanding the power of the Attack and Release knobs. These two controls allow you to completely change the tone and energy of your track.
    In this video I'm going to explain how to harness Attack and Release so you can do things like fatten up some drums or create more punch and energy on just about anything.

    Graham,
    Would you consider doing a similar "attack/release" video for vocals? Drum/percussion instruments seem to make sense in my mind about how to use a compressor. But with vocals because they are so dynamic, attack and release values are a little bit more confusing.

    Hey, thanks for all your hard work! Ive been a bedroom producer for a few yr now but recently started to realize Ive picked up some pretty bad mixing habits that now seem a lot more obvious. Been finding it very helpful to refresh myself on the basics and get some inspiration while I'm at it.

    Very well explained! It is the art of volume control, practice, practice, practice! Same principles you explained apply to motorcycle suspension adjustments btw. I don't ride a motorcycle without setting compression before hand, same with playing slap bass guitar; setting the compression before hand gives me a better ride.

    I read elsewhere that compressors always attenuate as soon as the threshold is crossed and the attack is the rate of compressions 2/3 to max (not zero to max). Also release was the rate to get back to 2/3 compression after the gain has gone back under the threshold. So the compressor is ALWAYS attacking or releasing once the threshold is reached. Can you elaborate on this?

  • @shamgarsan

    My understanding was that compression begins the moment the Threshold is crossed, and Attack is the time it takes to get to the full compression ratio, not the time it takes to start compressing. (And the reverse for Release.) Did I misunderstand something here?

    • @chaosme1ster
      @chaosme1ster 7 років тому +2

      Interesting question. I just tried: took a high pitched note from a soft synth, saw wave with zero attack, bounced to audio and normalized. Inserted a compressor with attack=250 ms (FabFilter C2), low threshold, zero knee on the audio track, and bounced again. The resulting wave clearly starts to decrease in volume from the very start and takes about 150 ms (not 250?) to reach its final low volume.
      Replaced with the stock Logic compressor (mode: digital), attack=200 ms, bounce. This time the resulting wave is totally different: first a 270 ms full-volume block followed by approx. 300 ms decay after which the signal reaches its final low-volume state.
      So apparently the answer depends on the compressor. Learned something new today, cool :-).

      Nice, now I see why there's so much confussion about Attack times: Every compressor implement them differently. It's very useful to know it, now I need to start putting more attention on the gain reduction meter on my compressors.

    Hey Graham just a random question, so I'm using logic and the attack settings of the compressor only are given in milliseconds, but it seems yours go all the way down to microseconds. is there a fundamental difference between these types of compressors and how they should be used?

  • @maxandersson7403
    @maxandersson7403 7 років тому

    Here are some compression images from Mike Senior excellent book "Mixing Secrets for the small studio". These images make it easier to understand visually how attack and release work in a compressor, and threshold and peak ratio for that matter. bbasound.wikispaces.com/Compression

  • @davecarsley8773
    @davecarsley8773 6 років тому

    Why wouldn't you always just want super fast/super fast? If a sound is too loud, you want ALL of that sound reduced (fast attack), and ONLY that sound (fast release) reduced, right? (I'm not an engineer)

  • @OlleHeadman
    @OlleHeadman 7 років тому +1

    I've two questions. Is the release time counted from the moment the volume exceeds the treshold or from the moment the compressor starts to reduce the volume of the audio.
    And I've trouble hearing the differences of attack and release times, should I care about numbers (or in this case milliseconds) or is it better to trust my instincts and probably end up with a bit too extreme settings?

    • @hinawachainsaw7820
      @hinawachainsaw7820 7 років тому +1

      Olle Hedman I think it is from the moment the compressor starts to reduce volume. in fact you can set a release faster than the attack...if it was the other way it would make no sense to release before attacking

    • @thirteenonline9503
      @thirteenonline9503 7 років тому +2

      Different compressors have their parameters set up different so in one compressor it might release once the volume is past the threshold and a different one might be from when the compressor starts to reduce the volume of the audio. So i would find the email contact of the manufacturers of your DAW or Plugin and ask them if you really want to know for certain how your specific compressor functions

    • @chaosme1ster
      @chaosme1ster 7 років тому +1

      Release is counted from the moment the audio signal drops below the threshold.

  • @matthewray5343
    @matthewray5343 7 років тому

    Wait, this video is a little misleading. It's true that if the attack is too slow it won't compress anything but that's why you adjust the threshold to compensate.
