"You won't have eyes tonight; you won't have ears or a tongue. You will wander the Underworld blind, deaf, and dumb and all the dead will know: this is Hector, the fool who thought he killed Achilles." One of the best lines I've heard in a movie
It's a quote to be sure, but is basically a nuclear response to an accidental bump waiting in line for popcorn at the movies. This is because in the original illiad, Patroclus was Achilles lover not his cousin, his death is much more of a cause to challenge Hector than the stated reason in the movie
This is still one of the best choreographed fights I've seen. Both men have different styles and their personalities are expressed in how they fight. Achilles is a finely-tuned instrument of death, and Hector is a seasoned veteran who knows his own strengths and weaknesses. Achilles is thinking three steps ahead this whole fight, but is pushed because Hector sees through multiple feints or doesn't leave himself exposed like a less experienced fighter. Hector knew he couldn't win, and he fought like a man who's only chance to live was to give it 100%.
I think he accepted it bc he knew he was wrong for killing Hector and bc of him Troy was destroyed.
When i first saw the movie, i loved this scene. But not so much now. If you look at the feet of Hector, the best warrior of Troy, when they started fighting they were falling in rhythm as Achilles. Achilles widled him away.
At the same time, I think part of the reason why this movie failed (somewhat) at the box office was that Achilles came off as somewhat as a bully. Pitt played him a tad to arrogantly.
I always loved when Achilles takes a second to take in he got touched by Hector on his chest. His armor held up but it was always a great detail, no one landed a blow on him in a long time if ever, he was just as surprised.

I saw this around 11 years old and I didn't knew the stories about troy. Seeing this without knowing who would win was truly epic as I rooted for Hector. Really wish more movies had as epic fight scenes as this one.
Achillies fighting style tries to tire Hector, he uses direct attacking moves to expend little energy but then moves fast obscurely meaning Hector has to reach far and keep chasing Achillies. This made him fatigue faster however Hector was an exceptional fighter and managed to hang on far longer than most opponents. You can see at 2:15 Achillies is actually pretty nackered and looks a little shocked and impressed because Hector is putting up a very strong fight! That's why Achillies respected Hector later in the film and realised in a fit of rage he killed the one man who may actually understand him.
@@openarms2519 We all see it abit different man, throw in how you saw it. I agree with the original commenter for the most part, but Hector's age, cardiovascular endurance, and over expenditure of energy decided the fight imo. Achilles was younger and well trained in the peak of his physical condition.
Oh, I know he is. I had to read The Iliad in university. He spends most of the book sulking in his tent because Agamemnon took his favorite "toy" away.
Did you know : Brad Pitt and Eric Bana did not use stunt doubles for their epic duel. They made a gentlemen's agreement to pay for every accidental hit; $50 for each light blow and $100 for each hard blow. Pitt ended up paying Bana $750, and Bana didn't owe Pitt anything.
I'm glad they didn't show the next part of this scene. When I saw it for the first time, I cried and had to turn away from the screen in the theatre. Hector was a good man, a good husband, brother, son.. He didn't deserve his body to be descicrated and left to rot.
One of the best fight scenes, I've ever seen in a movie! They're both great warriors and know, their way around a sword! Hector didn't even have to fight Achilles. He could've stayed behind the walls and let the guards take him out! But just like Achilles! Hector wasn't afraid, either!
@@busTedOaS It's right out of the original story. It might not be 'realistic' by today's standards, but today's standards of manliness are rather pathetic in comparison.
@@MrSprigg I read the Iliad, and this scene is definitely not "right out of the original story". Fun fact, originally Hector gets cold feet and runs away before the fight. Achilles chases him around Troy three times before catching up.
This fight scene is everything. The choreography, the soundtrack even the acting (I love how you can tell Achilles can't wait to kill Hector, being visibly angry even while telling him to get up, jumping in the moment he does). 1:14 Can't even describe how satisfying this strike is.
@@luxoblas6147 Nah, Achilles was human but dipped in the river styx, making him invulnerable. As a result, only his heel and foot were weak due to that being where his mother held him.
Am I the only one who loves the percussion in the background, along with the sound of the narrow misses that starts after Achilles gets into that pose after 1:02? I feel like they hit the nail on the head with the battle theme and sounds they chose for this fight, especially since its so quiet because of it being the second most climactic moment in the movie/play and fits perfectly with the tension everyone both in the movie and the audience feels!! (I.e. The moment of truth/only one man walks out alive/the grandest duel between the two greatest warriors alive)
There's a Directors Edition of this film where they use a more traditional orchestral score for this fight. Nothing particularly wrong with that, but like you I prefer the original percussion version
Perhaps the 100th time I watched this (1/10/2023) and I'm still impressed by how great the fight is. Awesome, awesome movie. I hope they make another movie like this.
I love how they made this fight scene. So fluid and epic. Brad Pitt and Eric Bana got really good footwork to pull off this scene. And Hector is a great man, he may not have been the mighty warrior but thats what I like about the tragedy of Illiad, sometimes good people fail and the cruel prevails.
In this telling of the story, Hector is probably the second-best warrior in the Greek world. He killed Ajax, the mightiest Greek fighter after Achilles, and pushed Achilles harder than he'd ever been before. But Hector's nobility, honor and compassion far outshone Achilles.
I love this fight scene, and I always rewind to watch this scene severally anytime I'm watching this movie. Hector had to fight for honor, while Achilles was fighting for the glory
Look at that skills, nothing is overblowned, each move is acted properly and it's so realistic. If there was a fight of Achilles and Hector in history, that would be similar to this scene.
The one fight where Achilles actually wanted to kill his opponent. This fight stands apart from all of his fights in the movie and showcases the true power of Achilles.
I read about this fight in Greek mythology years before watching this movie; Hector is correctly portrayed as one of the worlds most talented warriors/soldiers, but in the case of this fight it is Hector that has the “Achilles Heel” metaphorically because he was going up against someone that wasn’t completely human with Achilles having at least one parent that was immortal (in Greek mythology). Hector had no chance. It was Achilles’ demigod status that enabled his superior fighting skill.
Great fight scene! Really shows two very different styles. Hector is strong, fast and experienced. He fights instinctively. Achilles also strong and fast but has practiced moves. A repertoire of attacks and counters.
In the Homero's Book says: "...And Hector hurted to Achilles on his armor many times, but each time he did it, his wounds healed inmediatly, as protected by the Gods..."
Hector is like your “Superman” kind of guy. He’s good hearted, lawful and adored his family and country. Achilles is quite prideful, brooding but terrifyingly skilled, I guess you could say like Batman just learning more towards the chaotic side.
Not a slap on the ass, he's redirecting the sword and pushing him off balance. Which is something taught in Akido and Judo and many forms of martial arts. Momentum is a bitch, especially when your opponent knows how to redirect it and use it against you.
the DelSter that's respect to other fighter .. every has fight has discipline.. in our country india .. in Kerala they teach kairali fight .. ( mother and father of karate) u should see that fight .. every fighter respects other fighter such a disciplined fight.. U will find it on you tube..
Well he did kinda wait for Achilles to lose his spear but he broke the spear himself and immediately attacked with his sword not giving Achilles a chance to drove a sword on his own. I am not saying it's wrong, they were fighting to the death after all but this imo isn't something that he should take much credit. Btw Achilles throws his shield aside later since Hector lost his shield and Hector is reaching for second weapon so they are even.
I think what makes this fight scene more intense is the music. It slows to one drum instrument when it shows either the family or when the fighters are planning there next move, then raises the amount of instruments used when they fight, then returns to one when it shows either the fighters panting out of exhaustion or the family looking on in suspense.
You gotta love when Troy people and Helen witnessed the fight. They're frightened because they heard about Achilles' dominating all heroes. And he is like a God. Which makes them think it's just a myth. Nope. It's real to them because Achilles fight like a God Because of Achilles' great strength, stamina, speed, and ability. Even great athlete
I don't care if it diverges from the source material, this duel is great! I love everything about it: the drumming music, the heighthened banging and clanging of arms, their grim facial expressions, the insane choreography... everything is great:)
It is still amazing to me how well this movie portrayed Achilles grace on the battlefield. As great of a warrior as Hector was he just seemed so sloppy in this fight scene compared to Achilles.
Troy had some of the best Fight chorography I've ever seen in a film. Frankly this would be the best of the year, if Lord of the Rings didn't come out the same year.
The answer lies in what you said 8 years ago. For a family, no matter how tough and experienced you are, they will always fear for you. Achilles is a undefeated demigod so what do you expect from them? They are very religious and know that Hector, before this fight mocked Apollo, it's a bad situation from every way.
"If there is a man who is standing infront of me without any fear" you should be HECTOR is the words the ACHILLIES in their first confrontation at the temple. Tells the greatness of HECTOR, he may be lost but he is ETERNAL. The greatest of Troy and the greatest of Trojan war and the finest of mankind.
i was work in the production in this movie ,This scene was recorded 3 months after a hurricane in Cabo San Lucas Mexico destroyed the wall, there were two days left to finish and this was one of the last scenes
notice how Achilles isn't wasting any of his energy, he takes his time and strikes precisely when he plans to. Hector is using too much energy, not taking a step back to gain his breath which is why by the time he tries to strike when there are no shields, he's just way too tired to defend himself.
All these people on here blaming Helen for this is ridiculous. It was Paris' decision to bring her there and keep there. If anybody should take full blame, its him.
All those people blaming Helen simply haven't been paying much attention when watching the movie. There would have been a war even without Paris kidnaping her.
Its funny how people use the word irl here.... Its a word to mouth story told by Homer(maybe). Has there ever been any recorded texts from homer? Has any such texts been found?(an honest question, Im no history expert) Its a story enveloped in loads of layers of myth and allegory as far Ive understood it. Again, Im no expert for sure, but it just seems odd to use the term irl since none of us was there and there is so much time that has passed since those days of the event of the trojan wars. Achilles sure seems like an antagonist in som cases, he was an willing/unwilling tool used by a king(Agamemnon) that sought military and financial power and to unite the greek states he utilized the opportunities given to him by the whim of other men. If anyone hasn't read the story he was a man that allegedly killed his own daughter to show his level of commitment to the wives of the men traveling with him to sack and destroy troy that was a threat to, or competitor in the naval trade around the mediterranean sea.
Brad Pitt is a great actor in my book! He’s done a ton of great movies. In this one he put on wieght and pumped up for it! His athleticism in the fight scenes are exceptional!!
Reuben Walker Achilles feels the same way. "Get up, Prince of Troy. I won't let a stone take my glory." Though it does seem like Hector might have sprained his ankle or something.
Fighting in a life and death struggle with armor on, a shield, a spear, and a sword is extremely tiring. Your exerting your all from the very beginning, because all it takes is one mistake and it's over. If your just going through the motions of swinging a sword, then yes it's not that tiring; but swinging with all your might and meeting resistance of a shield or completely missing is extremely exhausting.
"You won't have eyes tonight; you won't have ears or a tongue. You will wander the Underworld blind, deaf, and dumb and all the dead will know: this is Hector, the fool who thought he killed Achilles."

Well, to be fair, the modern interpretation of The Iliad does kind of make Achilles out to be an asshole.
Terry Long He's worse in the original.
Oh, I know he is. I had to read The Iliad in university. He spends most of the book sulking in his tent because Agamemnon took his favorite "toy" away.
There was at least 1 more, Briseis. But Hector is the most heroic from the Iliad.
Terry Long hah here in hungary we had to read it in high school i was 15 years old back then ... little taste of hungarian education...
The sound Editor did everything right.
Hector fights like a man who's won a thousand battles, Achilles dances like a demi-god.
Did you know :
Brad Pitt and Eric Bana did not use stunt doubles for their epic duel.
They made a gentlemen's agreement to pay for every accidental hit; $50 for each light blow and $100 for each hard blow.
Pitt ended up paying Bana $750, and Bana didn't owe Pitt anything.
Woah!!!! That’s amazing thank you for the fact I did not know that one.
Did you know Pitt tore his Achilles during firing of the movie?
Jimbo Jangles oh my how ironic
I'm glad they didn't show the next part of this scene. When I saw it for the first time, I cried and had to turn away from the screen in the theatre. Hector was a good man, a good husband, brother, son.. He didn't deserve his body to be descicrated and left to rot.
Unbelievable scene. This sequencer is shot perfectly.
One of the best choreographed fight scenes with these types of weapons, ever.
One of the best fight scenes, I've ever seen in a movie! They're both great warriors and know, their way around a sword! Hector didn't even have to fight Achilles. He could've stayed behind the walls and let the guards take him out! But just like Achilles! Hector wasn't afraid, either!
It's very unrealistic. Lots of weird moves that look good but make little sense.

@@mad-mullah3117 The misogyny is uncalled for, bro. There are plenty of female HEMA fans out there. Yes, they're a minority, but they exist.
I like how the fight was choreographed. Hector is almost evenly matched but Achilles is essentially perfect.
This fight scene is everything. The choreography, the soundtrack even the acting (I love how you can tell Achilles can't wait to kill Hector, being visibly angry even while telling him to get up, jumping in the moment he does).
1:14 Can't even describe how satisfying this strike is.
Hey all youse guys. Hector killed Achilles lover. Ain’t his cousin it’s his lover!
Achilles is my favourite demigod, and I love how this fight is so loose and fluid in movements it could almost be mistaken for a dance.
he's a human
@@MrGriff305 no, hes a demigod
@@luxoblas6147 Nah, Achilles was human but dipped in the river styx, making him invulnerable. As a result, only his heel and foot were weak due to that being where his mother held him.
@@MrGriff305 Achilles is a great-grandson to Zeus. What does that tell you?
@@halloire his mother was a Nymph a grand-daughter of Titans, he's half human.
One of the best one v one sword fights in any movie ever!
The directors cut totally ruins the scene. The music here is perfect.
Perhaps the 100th time I watched this (1/10/2023) and I'm still impressed by how great the fight is. Awesome, awesome movie. I hope
they make another movie like this.
i won't let a stone take my glory
Why didn't Eric Bana turn into the Hulk?
Why didnt Orlando Bloom turned into Legolas?
Why didnt Brad Pitt turn into?... nevermind
Tobias Samuelsson Mickey O'Neil, Pikey's will have the fucken place surrounded in a cat's split second ya tickworm.
Lol
Bradd Pitt turns into death!
That's the same with George rr Martin's concept for the "Game of thrones" series. Sometimes the good guy doesn't win, that's the reality of life.
Hector had to fight for honor, while Achilles was fighting for the glory
one of the best fight scene of all time.
Look at that skills, nothing is overblowned, each move is acted properly and it's so realistic. If there was a fight of Achilles and Hector in history, that would be similar to this scene.
Achilles is so smooth in this fight scene. Damn he was awesome in this film. Well done Brad Pitt
This movie is underrated. It's not perfect, but it's a good movie for sure.
The one fight where Achilles actually wanted to kill his opponent.
This fight stands apart from all of his fights in the movie and showcases the true power of Achilles.
Hector was a Man, choose confrontation and he knows he will lose
YES...Hector was a very Noble man! That shows later with the guilt that Achilles felt. He even said that Hector was the Best he ever fought!
1:27 when you finally hit the boss, but realize you took only 1% HP
I read about this fight in Greek mythology years before watching this movie; Hector is correctly portrayed as one of the worlds most talented warriors/soldiers, but in the case of this fight it is Hector that has the “Achilles Heel” metaphorically because he was going up against someone that wasn’t completely human with Achilles having at least one parent that was immortal (in Greek mythology). Hector had no chance. It was Achilles’ demigod status that enabled his superior fighting skill.
Yes but in this movie Achilles isn't a God just a super competent soldier. This movie removes the gods from illiad and takes historical view
@@rudolphschmidt313One thing I really liked, he's not a demi god or a born son of one. Just a man really skilled with the sword.
@@alexcarter2461 Yeah bro this movie rocks
I love that Achilles's typical jumping stab move 1:14
Great fight scene! Really shows two very different styles. Hector is strong, fast and experienced. He fights instinctively. Achilles also strong and fast but has practiced moves. A repertoire of attacks and counters.
hector hangs in there but Achilles always in control of the fight
Well, he is a Demi God after all but yeah, Hector did well under the circumstances.
Wrong 1.28 hector almost slices ahciles chest of and he is shocked!then he fallows up with a clean cut almost right to his stomac!
+chris davila he let him do that to toy with him hence him pushing him down and saying get up prince of Troy
In the Homero's Book says: "...And Hector hurted to Achilles on his armor many times, but each time he did it, his wounds healed inmediatly, as protected by the Gods..."
wayne reid That shit would have lasted a long time if Hector didn't lose his shield, though.
Hector is like your “Superman” kind of guy. He’s good hearted, lawful and adored his family and country. Achilles is quite prideful, brooding but terrifyingly skilled, I guess you could say like Batman just learning more towards the chaotic side.
This whole movie was choreographed PERFECTLY!
I want to see more like this!
Brad is a great actor
I love how Achilles hits with the tip of the sword, it's so badass.
2:21 => watch how Archilles slap Hector in the ass
Not a slap on the ass, he's redirecting the sword and pushing him off balance. Which is something taught in Akido and Judo and many forms of martial arts. Momentum is a bitch, especially when your opponent knows how to redirect it and use it against you.
that walk off tho. badass
Born on the wrong side of the sea.. They would of been great together... Notice how hecter doesn't pull his sword till Achilles also loses his spear
the DelSter cause he couldn't being, barraged by his spear till it was broken. Id say when achilles threw his sheild's more admirable.
the DelSter that's respect to other fighter .. every has fight has discipline.. in our country india .. in Kerala they teach kairali fight .. ( mother and father of karate) u should see that fight .. every fighter respects other fighter such a disciplined fight.. U will find it on you tube..
This is a film not a life footage 😂
Hector pull the sword after he cut achilles spear
Well he did kinda wait for Achilles to lose his spear but he broke the spear himself and immediately attacked with his sword not giving Achilles a chance to drove a sword on his own. I am not saying it's wrong, they were fighting to the death after all but this imo isn't something that he should take much credit. Btw Achilles throws his shield aside later since Hector lost his shield and Hector is reaching for second weapon so they are even.
fucking incredible fight. astonishingly well choreographed hats off to the actors and stunt guys.
That music is a masterpiece of movie soundtracks. Just awesome.
This scene broke my heart....😢 I felt bad for Hector.
Hector scratched Achilles' chest armor.. Which is more than anyone else had ever done. Actually, I think cardio made the difference here. 😅
when he trips on the rock its like "awww man here we go"
why is Lord Commander defending Troy instead of the wall?
I think Hollywood will never do another Achilles vs Hector fight scene EVER.
Achiles vs Maximus would be great !
Definitely!!
Aquiles is invinsible ,he is the son of a God,he would wipe his ass...
Achilles vs leonidas
@@OdileOdile19 wow
he has a weakness though. idk whos maximus but if he's good enough to strike achilles ankle then he's pretty much dead.
best. fightscene. ever.
Best fight scene ever
I think what makes this fight scene more intense is the music. It slows to one drum instrument when it shows either the family or when the fighters are planning there next move, then raises the amount of instruments used when they fight, then returns to one when it shows either the fighters panting out of exhaustion or the family looking on in suspense.
You gotta love when Troy people and Helen witnessed the fight. They're frightened because they heard about Achilles' dominating all heroes. And he is like a God.
Which makes them think it's just a myth. Nope. It's real to them because Achilles fight like a God
Because of Achilles' great strength, stamina, speed, and ability. Even great athlete
Brad pit actorazoo total, ningún otro podría haber sido Aquiles...
that fight scene is really one of the best.
Thank you for uploading with the right Sountrack.... geez, many thanks!
I don't care if it diverges from the source material, this duel is great! I love everything about it: the drumming music, the heighthened banging and clanging of arms, their grim facial expressions, the insane choreography... everything is great:)
What was different if you don’t mind me asking?
@@RT-qz5ci well in the movie they complete erased the intervention of the gods in the war.
It is still amazing to me how well this movie portrayed Achilles grace on the battlefield. As great of a warrior as Hector was he just seemed so sloppy in this fight scene compared to Achilles.
Eric Bana is such an underrated actor.
This is a great fight, never seen better than this
pulls out the 1911, bang bang ---> crowd cheers goes in and has a beer, fuck it.
Troy had some of the best Fight chorography I've ever seen in a film. Frankly this would be the best of the year, if Lord of the Rings didn't come out the same year.
Because LOTR are the best movies ever but yea Troy was great too but LOTR deseved his title

+Itachi Uchiha That fight with the Lurtz man...i wish we could see Aragorn, son of Arathon wielding his sword once more...
Of Achilles' greatness there is no question but when Hector died that day the batter man had lost. Troy is a tale of sorrow not triumph
One of the most Epic fight scenes in Movie History
I love how hectors family pretty much assumed he loss the moment he got called out
The answer lies in what you said 8 years ago.
Except at controlling his brother.
One of the best fight scenes ever
i was work in the production in this movie ,This scene was recorded 3 months after a hurricane in Cabo San Lucas Mexico destroyed the wall, there were two days left to finish and this was one of the last scenes
notice how Achilles isn't wasting any of his energy, he takes his time and strikes precisely when he plans to. Hector is using too much energy, not taking a step back to gain his breath which is why by the time he tries to strike when there are no shields, he's just way too tired to defend himself.
All these people on here blaming Helen for this is ridiculous. It was Paris' decision to bring her there and keep there. If anybody should take full blame, its him.
irl he dies after shooting achilles
***** in real life he kidnapped her...
All those people blaming Helen simply haven't been paying much attention when watching the movie. There would have been a war even without Paris kidnaping her.
Its funny how people use the word irl here.... Its a word to mouth story told by Homer(maybe). Has there ever been any recorded texts from homer? Has any such texts been found?(an honest question, Im no history expert)
Its a story enveloped in loads of layers of myth and allegory as far Ive understood it.
If anyone hasn't read the story he was a man that allegedly killed his own daughter to show his level of commitment to the wives of the men traveling with him to sack and destroy troy that was a threat to, or competitor in the naval trade around the mediterranean sea.
dude we found where the trojan war was ,lol
Best fight, great skills
This is as epic as it gets
this scene is really intense. I know nothing about the greek history but it kinda makes my heart sad seeing a good man dies
can we take a moment to appreciate that Brad Pitt was 41 years old in this
Hector knew Achilles would take revenge for his cousins death. He valiantly fought to his death.
That 1-2 step in the beginning is so crazy!
Brad Pitt is a great actor in my book! He’s done a ton of great movies. In this one he put on wieght and pumped up for it! His athleticism in the fight scenes are exceptional!!
It's fucking annoying how a stone killed Hector...
Reuben Walker Achilles feels the same way. "Get up, Prince of Troy. I won't let a stone take my glory." Though it does seem like Hector might have sprained his ankle or something.
+tony diaz yes they are xD
Fighting in a life and death struggle with armor on, a shield, a spear, and a sword is extremely tiring. Your exerting your all from the very beginning, because all it takes is one mistake and it's over. If your just going through the motions of swinging a sword, then yes it's not that tiring; but swinging with all your might and meeting resistance of a shield or completely missing is extremely exhausting.
This scene always broke my heart, definitely a Hector fan.
This fight is iconic
Strangely Brad Pitt was a really good choice for the role of achilles
And Eric Bana was the same for Hector in my opinion.
why strangely?
the best pick. compared to him all earlier and later depictions are trash :D
Black Achilles is the best.
