      +expat74 There are plans for a new Roadster. Battery tech has come quite a way over the past years, and the Roadster would not need to be a ~$100k car like the sedan and SUV. They could spend that amount EXTRA on high-end batteries and make a really light car that still goes a good distance. I wonder if they'd still use standard "D" motors, or something special for that as well. Can any significant weight be saved? More power seems useless. More battery cooling however would be necessary to get some good constant power output. Model S is not perfect in that respect. Rimac claims to have done a lot with cooling.

    • @ArrayGamer
      @ArrayGamer 8 років тому

      Cloxxki Well for one thing, Tesla has used the best lithium ion batteries available as far as I know. What improvements come from is higher energy density from many small improvements over time, amounting to ~5% per year higher energy density. There really isn't a way to just pay more for a battery to be more dense or lighter since they already constantly use the best tech available, unless you are spending the money on research and development to make improvements over time slightly faster. I agree that the next gen roadster should definitely have a better cooling system though. *warning speculation ahead* Any improvement they do not implement to batteries would likely be because the added price outweighs the benefit or they would have to make large changes to manufacturing.

      I wouldn't doubt it. They'll get there! The incremental increase is due to slowly-increasing battery energy density as the cells continue to be developed. Actually, the Model S battery pack can probably already store over 100 kWh of energy if it were fully charged to 4.2V per cell, it's just that they don't fully charge the battery and don't fully discharge it. Operating the pack this way lengthens it's lifespan.

    • @andrewhockings7639
      @andrewhockings7639 8 років тому

      +FpsNorwayFighter Model S going to be doing 500-600 miles by 2018 so gonna have to have a lot more juice in there somewhere. More than 100. i would suggest a battery that can store 180 - 200Kwh. If the drive shafts can stand it you'd have to be looking at under 2 secs then.

    • @BasementEngineer
      @BasementEngineer 8 років тому

      DevonBloke That's always an interesting side effect of increasing the battery capacity--for a given pulse C rate, increasing the capacity also increases the power. They're gonna have to build a car with four rear wheels to get it all down :)
      Another interesting property of electric vehicles is that they can be huge and heavy (very long range per charge) and still be very energy efficient. The electric motor is about three times as efficient as a gas engine.

    After a few years, you will see that the electric vehicles will take the energy asphalt to the private roads and the vehicles will go to very long ranges on this track
    the car will take the current by carrying the special current band from the vehicle floor which will be like the colliding cars and the rest will be easy and the furnished current banded strips going into this asphalt will also be the rightmost strips and the rightmost strip will be used to strengthen the sides. it will be half a hour to have fast-paced the vehicle from the right hand lane. the idea is my name namikgecko turkey

    It is fast, but it doesn't sound very cool. Sort of a ninjasword, but without the ninja. Like a Desert Eagle AE .50 but without the 5 lbs gun it self, only the bullet, like something is missing. Anyway, anyone knows how much juice from the batteries an accelleration like that takes? 10%?

      i think this sound cool enough .... i fancy the idea of going fast without much sound.... perfect for running over the ex-wife in silence at night, when she is using the pedestrain crossing (much less witnesses if it's silent) ... also perfect for a more serene drag race, without alerting the cops ... silence is golden !!!

    • @BasementEngineer
      @BasementEngineer 8 років тому +1

      +Sgt_Bepps To put things in technical terms, who gives a flying fuck what it sounds like. It's quiet because it's energy efficient--the battery power goes almost entirely into propelling the car instead of producing heat and noise.
      I've always enjoyed the sound of internal combustion engines myself, but I'll be the first to admit that the sound they make is pure wastefulness, and I don't know why people are so hung up on it, nevermind the need they have to complain about the lack of it in electric vehicles.
      The quiet zing of a Tesla electric vehicle is the sound of a highly efficient, zero-emission, yet stunningly quick car--a truly modern vehicle and one of very few.
      It has a plenty cool sound of it's own--but that's hardly the point.

    • @BasementEngineer
      @BasementEngineer 8 років тому +1

      +Pumilio
      I'm trying to shoehorn that into my brain as well. The noise of an IC engine isn't "the sound of power"; it's just wasted energy. I like engine sounds too, but I wish people would get it through their thick skulls that it's not power at all, it's waste.

      +occckid123 Really! :D That's what most reviewers and "experts" do wrong. They either gently roll on the "gas" or press brake and gas at the same time and release the brake pedal to launch, which the Tesla doesn't like and yells at you, because of the high torque the motors produce. Therefore, the best way to launch a dual motor Model S is by hovering your foot over the accelerator and the stomping as hard as you can. The stability and traction control will distribute the power between front and rear motor. And bam, best launch. In the video, in some run, he rolls on the accelerator. If the car is "jumping", you now it's right. That's the high torque. :D

      It was tested 0-60 by Motor Trend 2.6 seconds. 0-100 kph should have been around 2.8. that being said most users are reporting right around 3.0 to 3.2 0-100 kph. A lot has to do with the road conditions and grad. This road seems plenty flat but when batteries are warmer the tends to perform slightly better.

      +Sassymui8 Hi, it was about 50% charge. Like all cars we review, we performed 0-100km/h a number of times using different take-off methods and so on. 3.2 is the best average we could achieve. Conditions were warm. Tarmac is completely flat and smooth (different to road shown in video).
