Cripple Creek - Banjo - Folk Song

- Cripple Creek is a traditional American folk song. I sing and play it on the mountain banjo, only this time I play it, two finger thumb lead. Normally this song is played in the Clawhammer or Overhand style. So this might sound a little different than your used to hearing it.
Cripple Creek lyrics
(Kentucky, traditional)
Banjo tuned like standard G only down to low octave A sharp
I got a gal,
At the head of the creek,
I go on up and see her
bout the middle of the weak.
She`s got eyes
of baby blue
and how my love
for her is true
chorus:
Goin' up Cripple Creek,
Goin' on a run,
Goin' up Cripple Creek,
To have a little fun.
Goin' up Cripple Creek,
Goin' in a whirl,
Goin' up Cripple Creek,
To see my girl.
Well the girls up Cripple Creek,
'Bout half grown,
Jump on a boy,
Like a dog on a bone.
I`ll roll my britches,
Up to my knees,
And wade ol' Cripple Creek,
When I please.
chorus:
Goin' up Cripple Creek,
Goin' on a run,
Goin' up Cripple Creek,
To have a little fun.
Goin' up Cripple Creek,
Goin' in a whirl,
Goin' up Cripple Creek,
To see my girl.
I've got a gal and she loves me,
She`s as sweet as she can be.
Cripple Creek's wide,
An' Cripple Creek's deep,
I`ll wade ol' Cripple Creek,
before I sleep.
chorus:
Goin' up Cripple Creek,
Goin' on a run,
Goin' up Cripple Creek,
To have a little fun.
Goin' up Cripple Creek,
Goin' in a whirl,
Goin' up Cripple Creek,
To see my girl.
One of the best I’ve ever heard, Dan!

i always thought this was a Buffy St Marie song...learn something every day....another great recording Dan.... you've got the mic is exactly the right place for vocals and banjoy!!
Thanks Michael! Buffy wrote some great songs but I`m fairly certain this one predates here by at least a few decades.
Such a great sound. Love the thump and plunk...and your vocals are just right!
Thanks Nancy! I starting to think maybe the fingerstyle works better for me than the clawhammer which I could never get to sound right.
Mighty fine, Dan!
Thanks Tom! It`s always fun singing this one!

Thank you! Such a great song!
Hey dan, you had a banjo song called Barlow Knife I really love it, what happened to it? 😃
Yes! I put a bunch of lyrics from other folk songs to Barlow Knife. Most just play the instrumental. I set it to private because it didn`t sound good when I listened again after a long time. I`ll try to do it over better next year good Lord willing and the creek don`t rise.
