Hey everyone, today we're exploring a hidden gem in the Idukki district of Kerala, India - the Mattupetty Dam and Lake!
This isn't your typical sightseeing spot; it's a marvel of engineering and nature combined. The Mattupetty Dam, made of concrete, isn't just for storing water; it's a vital source of hydroelectric power for the region. Built shortly after India gained independence in 1947, this dam has been standing strong since 1953, holding an impressive 55.4 million cubic meters of water!
The Mattupetty Lake, formed by this dam, is where the magic happens. It's a perennial lake, meaning it never dries up, even in the scorching summers. During the monsoon, it swells to its full capacity, becoming a haven for birds and wildlife.
Visiting here? Well, there's a lot to do! From leisurely boat rides starting at just INR 300 for 15 minutes on an ordinary boat, to thrilling speedboat rides at INR 500, there's something for everyone. If you're with a larger group, opt for the big boat ride for INR 700, which accommodates up to 20 people for a half-hour adventure.
Plus, you can't miss walking across the dam itself, which offers stunning views of the lake and surrounding hills. It's open from 9:30 AM to 5 PM every day, with a nominal entry fee of just INR 10 per person.
So, whether you're into scenic views, wildlife spotting, or just a peaceful boat ride, Mattupetty Dam and Lake should definitely be on your travel list. It's a blend of history, nature, and adventure, all in one beautiful destination.
