I really like how informative you are, I respect the time and effort you put into these videos (including the diagrams and parts list) by far one of my favorite channel on this platform
I lost my tach also, but the "tacho" wire out of my MegaSquirt did the job. No resister needed. For full disclosure, I am so cheap, that I purchased the DYIms2pnp kit. (Yes, I spent 6-10 hours soldering it together.) I just had to connect it to the yellow wire with the blue stripe. It's the 4th wire in from the right top row of the plug when looking at it from the back. (Where the wires enter the larger plug NA6).
i'm about to pull the trigger on a 1.8 swap for my 1990 thanks to you and all of the great information you put out there! You are a gentleman and a scholar Greg Peters.
Although you kept on going on about how boring and long this stuff is, i found it really interesting and a little eye opening to how simple the wiring in our cars can be. Thanks for the awesome content!
The technical content on your videos is top notch, always enjoy your uploads. That's hard for me say being a Honda s2000 driver. You've tempted me to bin my AEM Ems and go MS
I dont "thumbs up" many videos but i have much respect for how much time and effort youve put into this build. So glad i subscribed years ago. Good job man!
I started to wire my vvt into my NA just today. Dude, until you haven't started this by yourself you will never know how helpful this Video is. Thanks a Lot! Just having a look at it helps so much more than any diagramm ever could 😂
TheCarPassionChannel Yeah, found it. Since you replied so fast: If I Had the full vvt harness, would it be smart and possible to use it instead of splicing into the na harness, especially when i had the option to use an ms3x for the nb2? 🤔
TheCarPassionChannel So keep NA harness, do wiring Magic and use 90-93 Megasquirt ist easiest? I am still in the position to throw in a 90-93 ecu or the one for the NB2, thats why i ask 😂
As for the coils, one of the grounds on each coil you mentioned might be a tach signal (at least they are on toyota coils). The 1K resistor might indeed be added if you still got no tach, it goes from IG+ to B- (from the top of my head, do your own research) Also if you want a “cleaner”/Plug n Play install, you can also hack up the ignitor itself, pull the insides out and solder your coil loom to the inside pins, drill a hole in there for the wires and close it up. That way of you ever need to take the coil loom out it’s a lot easier to work on.
Massive thanks Greg!!! I just fitted LS2 coils to my 1.6 turbo entirely based on your help here. Fired up no problem at all! Really appreciate your videos. Also did a water pump/timing belt solely from your advice!!!
with that much extra stuff, i am wondering why you didn't build an entire harness from scratch? Polarity does not matter on injectors. it's still only a solenoid the direcion of the force doesn't change with polarity.
I swapped a VVT NB2 in my NB1 98, and i would love to know if you'd get more in dept with the VVT in MS and showing us how you'd set it up. Great video Greg!
its greg, you know he'll do a vid on VVT/MS, but the motor's not even wired into the car yet so MS is gonna wait until he's almost ready to turn it over the first time.
This video is very helpful. Even though I am working on my Supra, I find these videos are very helpful. I am working on installing a ECU Masters standalone with a e85 flex fuel sensor and a few other add ons. Also I am making a whole new engine harness for the factory sensors with braided loom to give it a clean look.
Yo, I just want you to know this really helped me with my 97 with a 2000 1.8 I've been having issues with the wiring from the previous owner I'm just trying to make it more reliable thanks bro!
Cool video as usual, you really put the time in to making these. Can't wait to see it run, I'm anticipating gearbox issues..............................in a good way.
Thank you for the excellent supply of wiring diagrams, sensor test procedures and other wiring diagrams. Much Appreciated. Also feeling dumbfounded at replies like "Why don't you put a Honda engine in there instead of building a VVT Beast?" or my other favorite "Pricey 400 horsepower." Insulting.
@TheCarPassionChannel I have the thermoswitch installed at the back with the other sensors as a safety feature incase for some reason MS has a failpoint and doesnt turn on the fans, this will automatically ground the fans and make them come on anyways, just a backup safety for peace of mind IMO
Nice one Greg doing a COPs / LS2 coil conversion myself and its good to see a good detailed video to give me some confidence! I have know idea what that resistor is meant to do either. Must be witchcraft.
Yo Greg, those two ring terminal grounds at 8:00, for some reason Mazda wired the signal ground (green/black) into the engine ground only on the 1.6, right there. You'll get cleaner ADC values on the megasquirt if you cut that green/black wire off the engine ground.
Nah, maybe, just cut the green and black wire free from the ring terminal and leave it unconnected. Leave the other solid black wire grounded. You can see the wire you're going to cut on this schematic, figure 2 D6. www.yorbalindamiata.com/images/wiring/90diag.pdf See how the black/ltgrn wire grounds outside the ECU? Megasquirt works better if you leave all sensor grounds grounded only into the megasquirt, plus no switching devices using sig gnd for a ground, like a wideband heater circuit. I'm assuming the bundle you've got tucked up into the left most corner of the engine bay used to be bolted to the little bracket to the rear of the 1.6 intake mani, right? That's where the wire I'm talking about should be.
Looking good Greg appreciate all the info... 1 thing tho...CLEAN THE TOP OF YOUR HOOD OMG it’s still got soot from the fire all over it...keep up the great work can’t wait to see thing thing run
The biggest question that has loomed over this whole series from the beginning and one I am shocked has not been addressed is: How the heck are you going to pass smog with megasquirt and a turbo? Seriously how do you expect to drive this legally?
Wealth of info! :D Question though, on the ignitor. When the tach doesn't work, is it because that earth isn't being used anymore? I've been thinking about going to a different CoP setup since the Fab9 guy is too difficult to get in touch with. The coils went bad and it seems to be an issue with them in general (I daily my car though, so maybe they weren't made for daily use?)
Hey Gregg I've been trying to figure this out but have had no luck, was hoping you could help me out. Where and how exactly do you connect the VVT signal wire to the megasquirt? Also where do you recommend taping for the 12v source? Just FYI I currently don't have a megasquirt but will soon though. Just arming up with as much knowledge before hand. Thanks in advance!
I don't recall the exact pin off hand, but your MSPro will come with a manual, which contains a pin chart, and on that chart there's a recommended pin for VVT. For the 12-volt source I took it from the injector harness. I'm not sure if that's correct or not but everything seems to be functioning properly 🙂
@@TheCarPassionChannel thank you for the Fast reply you have been very helpful. I wasn’t sure what to expect with the mega squirt so I’m glad to know it comes with a detailed manual. And for the 12v I think you are correct. I read from a few in forums who recommended the same so thank you for confirming function.
how can i fit the 2002 1.8 with the 1990 ignition wires. i don’t want the vvt i alll wondering if i can add the CAS from my old 99 engine on my 1990 chassis
Amazing Greg! Thanks for the video and information on the site. (A lot of your videos help me with my other projects! So thank you so much! Don't ever stop! Lol)
Man something going on with your videos. I went back trying to search for this one in the normal youtube search and when I used to type miata flex fuel it would pop up now it doesn't unless I enter thecarpassionchannel too. That sucks. I hate when youtube does that stuff!
i wonder if i could wire up ls2 coils to run on a stock ecu somehow just trick it to think that its still the stock ignition system, i wonder what tells the ecu that the ignition system is ok so that it could be bypassed?

hey greg on your coil build , what are your settings in the Mega Squirt for ignition like dwell and rest of the settings. Backyard Gearhead From what I was recommend by people with more experience than me; it's easiest to just add the 2 wires for VVT.
TheCarPassionChannel So keep NA harness, do wiring Magic and use 90-93 Megasquirt ist easiest? I am still in the position to throw in a 90-93 ecu or the one for the NB2, thats why i ask 😂

these videos deserve more recognition.
So clean under there. Looks like as much room around the engine like in an old 60's era car. Let's do this!
It's sooo valuable having all this information consolidated into one source. For all the hours it took you, thanks man! Always inspiring!
How you pass Cali emissions is still a mystery to me.
Coady Lewis The plug lol
Coady Lewis But technical speaking he could bar it if he used the stock ecu and no turbo
Or just live in a county that doesn't do emission tests outside of changing owners lol

Legend! Really appreciate the effort you've gone to make these videos.
When you said “the moment you’ve all been waiting for” i thought you where about to cut scenes and fire it up
Great work Sir! I’ll be referencing the info for my current build. Thanks and keep it coming.
Tach mod is a 1k ohm resistor between GND and Tach
Between IG- and B+. Sorry
+Jens Schilstra Perfect thank you, knew it was something like that.
Nice job. This awesome video would have saved me HOURS of research on MiataTurbo about 2-3 wks ago .. but .. where's all the MS settings ?!
That looks like the square top air intake manifold?
Jorge Meza he made a video on buying a Skunk2 manifold
Ahh so he had already made this vid and was editing it then got the skunk 2 cool.
Lol dude I look and my previous videos and pictures when I forget stuff too! :) nice to know I'm not the only one.

What a great channel you've got here. Lots of great information.
where in on MS does the signal wire from the Flex Sensor Go
Options port; it will show you in the manual. I don't remember the exact pin off hand
Nice timing man! This is what I am doing later today lol. Thank you so much for this great reference piece

Your content is amazing I love u
@TheCarPassionChannel Why is it the vvt engine seems to have a louder turbo chatter or flutter than the non vvt engine?
Holy crap your vids are motivating me to start a 1.8 swap! What 1.8 would be best for a NA6 chassis swap? I'm thinking of an NA8 but is the VVT worth it?
BP4W (99-00) motor is the easiest swap and yields better power than the BP05 (NA8) swap.
Anybody have suggestions on how to run 99 harness with 01-05 motor? Talking about doing ignition coils. And might not run VVT
Does this wiring also work on the na8?
Can we have launch control and ethanol content at the same with ms2?
