Hey everybody, Ryan here at eTrailer. Today on our 2020 Honda HR-V, we're gonna be showing you how to install the EcoHitch Trailer Hitch Receiver. But before we get to that, why don't we take a minute check this out and make sure it's gonna work for you. With the HR-V being a pretty compact vehicle you know you don't have a ton of room for extra stuff on the inside so it'd be nice to be able to use accessories back here and help kind of free up some space. So having a hitch is gonna allow you to do just set, you know, use a bike rack and things of that nature. Or maybe, you know if you're pulling a small trailer around maybe you got some kayaks or something, you know, you can use it for that and not have to deal with trying to put 'em on the roof and go through all that.
So having this back here is really gonna open up your opportunities on what you're gonna be able to do with your HR-V. If I had to pick a hitch for an HR-V this would be the one I'd recommend compared to some of the other ones for several different reasons really. One of 'em being how it's gonna look, the appearance of it. For the most part, it's gonna be completely hidden, right And looks like a factory . But more importantly is it's gonna be quite a bit more capable.
This one's gonna have a two inch by two inch opening. All right, so that's a really common size and it really expands the choices as far as accessories go, you can use a lot more a lot more accessories and whatnot. And also it has some higher capacities than the other hitches. So you're gonna be, you know, it's gonna be able to handle more and that's exactly why the owner of the HR-V chose this one today. He's using a Kuat bike rack.
It's kind of a bigger bike rack and it has the two inch shank so you're gonna be able to use it with this hitch and with it being heavier, I believe he said he is putting on an e-bike, if I'm not mistaken. So pretty heavy, given the extra capacity that this one can handle, it just made sense, you know, you won't be pushing the limits of the other hitches compared to this one. At the end of our two inch opening, we're gonna have a reinforced collar for a little bit of extra support. I think it kind of looks good too. Kind of makes it look more complete.
It is going to use this standard 5/8 pin and clip. Keep in mind though, pin and clip doesn't come included with the hitch. If you need one, you can grab it here at etrailer and a lot of times as well accessories will come included with that. So just keep that in mind. The safety chain openings are a little on the small side but not really a big deal. They should allow us to use just about any size hook that our trailer might have on it. Now let's describe a couple of measurements. These will help us figure out what type of accessories to use. From the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube opening that's gonna be about 15 inches. So if you plan on pulling a small trailer around, you can probably use a ball mount that has a straight tank or one with a slight rise in it. And that kind of holds true for accessories too. You know, if you got a straight tank, fine if you can get one that bumps it up a little bit probably not a bad idea either. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the rear bumper, it's gonna be about, it's like about three and a half inches, which is really good. But you can use that to figure out exactly if any of those folding accessories you might have can be stored in that upright position without hitting the back of your Honda. Other than that, at the end of the day, if you're looking for a hitch for the HR-V, this is definitely the one I would recommend. Hands down, I think it looks the best and is most capable. So can't really ask for too much more. As far as the installation goes, it's really not too bad. I'd say probably the worst part of it for me was just trying to figure out where all the different types of hardware goes cause they give you quite a bit of it. So hopefully you know, this video will help you out and kind of clear some things up for you there. But speaking of that, why don't we go ahead. pull 'em to the garage, and put it on together now. So to begin our installation, we're gonna be here at the back of our HR-V and first thing we need to do, we're gonna have a couple of push pin fasteners here along this bottom edge that we need to pull out. This is what the fastener is gonna look like. We're gonna have one on each side of our vehicle and with these you can take a flathead screwdriver Kind of pry down on the head of it and work the whole base out. Now do the same thing to get the other o

I have a 2019 HRV. I want to tow a small 600lb teardrop camper (Runaway CoolCamp Camper) but they are saying i need a 2" hitch. I hear you saying you install a 1-1/4".
Can i still tow this? If so, what do i need? Thank you for your time!

Who is they? Your 2019 HR-V would tow that teardrop just fine with either a Class I hitch like the Curt # C11416 with a 1-1/4 inch receiver or the EcoHitch # 306-X7322. Other than the size of the receiver tube, the other primary difference between the two options is how the hitch appears once it's installed. The Curt hitch will be fully visible under the rear bumper, while the EcoHitch model will have the crossbar concealed behind the bumper with only the receiver opening and the safety chain hoops being visible. If your budget allows, we always recommend going with the 2 inch receiver, since going that route will provide many more options as far as hitch mounted accessories go. You'll also need a trailer wiring harness like # 118673.

_They_ would be the camper companies (specifically Runaway Campers) in their hitch specs. I'm new to this so my knowledge is limited.

The trailer doesn't care what hitch you use, as long as you don't exceed the towing and tongue weight capacity of the vehicle or the hitch, you're good to go!

Maybe Honda doesn't offer an OEM hitch, but there are aftermarket hitches available. You can see what's available here:
