Tales of innocence r has a translation patch you can add to the vita or pstv if you have it hacked to play. Easy to do and worth it, there are an abundance of games that have been fan translated because they never made it to the west for the vita.

Xenoblade Chronicles is one of those rare games that only come around maybe once a generation. It was something special that was only hindered by the Wii. So excited for the Switch remaster.

Go with the 3ds remake it's the same game with extras. And I have to say for me it is my favorite 3ds game, beating out the bravely series and a link between worlds.

I'm surprised u say tol2 and not 1. I love the heck out of 1 but hearing 2 was time travel threw me off from trying it out....along with it being a sequel since from my experience sequels usually end up failing what the original did

This is not a new game, this is the same game from 2012 running 720p with inconsistently low resolution, in addition to lowish texture quality. The remaster was disapointing they've pretty much only polished up the main character models and added a epilogue for full price
jfray G. The remaster might have been disappointing, but the game itself certainly wasn’t. It was my first time playing it and it was completely worth it for me. Even if the remaster wasn’t as great as others, the game itself is still intact (unlike another remake)
@@kr1me2000 That explains a lot. Three Houses is more like the older Fire Emblems on the GBA, Gamecube and Wii story wise. The only fault was the week system it bored me like Persona dose in the aspect. I find the people who only played the DS ones hate the older (better) type of Fire Emblem personally I hated Awakening and Fates. Echos was good, but that was also a remake of an older game.
On the one hand Persona 5 to many people might be the greatest JRPG ever made. On the other hand, I appreciate so much that you have a specific amd consistent opinion and preference for RPGs.
@referral madness Because those games are very different? Persona 5 has a focus on characters and style. It's polished and appeals to everyone. SMT is a very niche game that only applies to "hardcore gamers" for lack of a better word. It's not very polished and has a stronger focus on gameplay.

Brett Mitts It is up there no doubt. Persona 5 is definitely among the top JRPGs of all time and I have played a lot of JRPGs over the years. Definitely one of the best stories. Dragon Quest 5 also comes to mind in that regard.
Persona its a waifu animu sim rpg. SMT Its hardcore philosophic demon summoning dungeon crawling rpg where you kill god and lucifer to become a god or a demon king. They have a different tatget audience but still loved both. The dating sim in persona is still anoying for me mostly cause all the girls in persona 5 are ugly for me
Xenoblade is by far my favorite game of this decade every game system intertwined beautifully for a wonderful gaming experience that I will never forget
@@michaelk639 Characters and Monster Autoattack when in Range and you get to use various skills much like in MMO's. Skills effects changes/improves with your positioning and in what order you use them. Most of the time it's a stat check really, but if you don't grind too much it's quite a challenge. Combat may look boring in vids, but I assure you it's super fun of you play yourself.
While I haven't played as many modern RPGs in the 2010s (I've been spending time catching up on classics) but I must say Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is my game of the decade. It just captured my heart and I love its world and characters. A few others are of course the original Xenoblade, Mario & Luigi Dream Team (which I actually didn't play til this year) and I can promise you, I'll be spending some quality time with all the games on this list

DQ XI was fantastic. I saw Octopath in your intro and had hoped to see it on your list, but since it came out the same year as DQ XI, I can see why it didn’t make the cut. Keep up the great work, man.
Octopath Traveller is a game I really wanted to like, but it seems a lot of games that bulk on up RPG battle mechanics too much tend to feel burdensome after a time. First couple of hours is the honeymoon period: "this battle system is awesome" - hour 3-8 is the denial period: "Wish these battles are over, but at least I like the battle system, right?" then over that it's either "I'm glad there's an auto-battle" or "Let's just get this game over with!" Unfortunately, because it's against what I want to enjoy, I find it is the slick and simplistic tried and true mechanics that tend to be the games I can play for dozens of hours with. Xenoblade, easy and snappy, Dragon Quest easy and snappy, Final Fantasy the same... but then Square's "B-games" for lack of a better term, but Bravely Default, Crystal Chronicles, I am Setsuna, and Octopath Traveler all have these gimmicks that seem really fun at first; but, burdensome after engaging with them over and over again.
There definitely lots of wester RPGs that deserve to be on this list as well. Even based on your criteria. I agree with others that this video should be top JRPGs. Not RPG
It's such a shame the ending was rushed. The Xillia cast is one of the very best in video games and the skits were consistently brilliant across both games.
2010 - Dragon Quest 9 (I wish they'd do a multiplayer game again, I loved this one) 2011 - Xenoblade Chronicles 2012 - Rune Factory Oceans 2013 - Fire Emblem Awakening 2014 - Stick of Truth 2015 - Xenoblade Chronicles X (easily my favourite RPG of the decade, also the only game besides Earthbound I really played on the Wii U for any serious time). 2016 - Stardew Valley 2017 - Xenoblade Chronicles 2 2018 - Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna the Golden Country (it was a weak year, but this one was good) 2019 - Final Fantasy 7, 8, and X were a gigantic treat for me on Switch (while I played these all many times before, having them on a Nintendo console is so much more sweet). I also have yet to play DQ11 because I know a family member picked it up for me for Christmas
Xenoblade chronicles X on the Wii u was freaking awesome btw, I've never played any other in the series but that one was fantastic. Couldn't believe how they pulled it off on that hardware
I totally agree with you. Sure it has its flaws like the story but the Soundtrack is amazing, the battle system is fluid, and the world is gorgeous. Here in Germany Xenoblade Chronicles X still has way too many haters for the wrong reasons.
Xenoblade Chronicles is hands down my favorite RPG franchise AND my favorite Nintendo franchise ( though EarthBound remains my favorite game of all time ). All 3 games thus far have been among the best experiences I ever had with a game, between the story & characters, the incredible soundtracks ( the lack of any X songs in Smash feels so very wrong ), the gameplay and the worlds we explore they can't be beat IMO. Hopefully X gets a Switch port though...it very much deserves a 2nd chance, I know I'd happily buy it again ( I did but the original Xenoblade 3 times now across Wii, New 3DS and Switch )

I played radiant historia in a hacked ds... yes, I feel guilty but it was so amazing. The narrative was so thrilling. Loved it. You can consider as well I am Setsuna from tokyo rpg factory which recovers the essence of the old style games.
Dont feel guilty about that! Emulation is quite the same. Loved the idea of Radiant Historia. So many improvements to older RPGs, yet it felt so full fletched

Great list! It’s funny to think that if it wasn’t for you, I, and others, that we almost didn’t get “Xenoblade Chronicles” here in America! Especially now that it is one of the top JRPG series and its sequels were important titles for the Wii U and Switch! I love the Trails series, I really hope the Trails in the Sky trilogy and Crossbell arc along with the Cold games make it to Switch so more people can enjoy them. Personally I found the first “Trails of Cold Steel” game to be faster paced and more interesting than part 2, but both are incredible games!

I've had the trails games in my steam wishlist for 3/4 years now, and your mentions (along with some of your lets plays) make me want to start digging into them right now. I'd also agree with one of the comments in here, but in a different way. More than a "top 10 tales games", I'd like you release a "Tales of Tierlist" video. Where you go through each and every one of them, and put them in a specific level when compared against each other. Because I'd like to hear your opinion on the so-called bad Tales games moreso than the good ones (because everyone talks about those anyway). And given how big the Tales of stash is, I'd be hard pressed to think there isn't any foul-smelling crap among them. Personally Xenoblade is my RPG of the Decade. However one that I feel gets overlooked on the Wii is "The Last Story". The character designs are some of my favorites, I love the music and story, but I will admit the combat might put some people off. Still if you haven't played it I 100% recommend it.

The Legend of Heroes franchise is my favorite JRPG franchise ever. And I say that as a veteran RPG player like you who grew up in the NES era. Discovered it in my late 20's and it probably single-handedly rekindled my love of JRPGs.
Man, 2017 has to of been my favorite year of rpgs. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was the winner for me, but there were plenty of other games I liked. Tales of Beseria, Gravity Rush 2, Yakuza 0, and Digimon Next Order hit in January. Whilst not what one might call 'RPG,' March had Nier Automata and Legend of Zelda: BotW, which I would like to mention. The Switch obviously dropped then too. April brought major attention to RPGs with Persona 5. June had FFXIV: Stormblood expansion for MMORPG fans. September had Trails of Cold Steel 3, Ys VIII, and Danganronpa V3 (Also not an RPG, but notable). Pokemon Ultra Sun/Moon in November. And obviously, to close on the year, Xenoblade Chronicles 2. 2017 just had so much to choose from.

But there's no Megami Tensei game :/ It's a good top. But sadly not that good. Seriously, SMT IV is one the best jrpgs I've ever played. It introduced me to SMT series which it's now my favorite one. Most of the games in the top are outstanding too tho.
I agree about Cold Steel 3, easily the best JRPG of the year. I had high expectations for it going in and yet it fully exceeded them. Outside the fantastic story and characters that par for the course for the trails series, The battle system was improved so much from the solid battle system of the first two games (hell, I even gushed about how they improved the damn fishing) and the pacing was fantastic (I spent 120+ hours on the game but boy did it not feel like it). Glad to see you cooled down from the ending lol (though I understand, it took me a bit of time to process the ending). Also, I think I might be the only person on the planet who thinks cold steel 1 is better paced then cold steel 2. That middle section of CS 2 really dragged on and on for me, culminating in that tedious as hell Zemurian ore quest. CS 1 never dragged for me that bad personally.
Yer I can see that but I think the reason I like cs2 over 1 is cause it just feels faster maybe cause there's no thors sections to slow down the pase. Also cs2 gives me Sara and Sharon for more then an hr so yer
I mean a lot of people view CS2 as the worst trails game because its such a mess. Divertissement just fits weirdly into the flow of the story and reverie corridor is just filler to have a second final boss when infernal castle was a good way to stop with some epilogue telling us the things happening in crossbell. The entire second act also reminds me of SC chapter 8. CS1 and CS2 could've probably been 1 game if they trimmed a few scenes that weren't essential. Going from azure to cs1 and cs2 must give a man some crazy whiplash.
@@luminous3558 While agree that CS 2 is the worst Trails game, It's still a great game (that suffers from pacing issues but I also think SC also suffers from pacing issues as well). Even the worst Trails game is better than the most games (I'd personally play CS 2 over any Final Fantasy game).
DQ XI S is easily my favorite JRPG of the decade. Coming from someone that started with VII,and has played every DQ game to date,I'd agree with what you said personally. V still will always be my favorite DQ though.
I think it's great that I've either played, and beaten, or want to play most of these! Except the 2 Tales of games I guess, I've never been much of a Tales of fan. I do have Tales of the Abyss on 3DS, but most the time I don't care. I'm pretty much 100% in agreement with you about Dragon Quest! I love Dragon Quest IX, and the series in general, but I probably wouldn't put it as my number 1 just because of some games we missed. Edit: OK sorry I forgot to say this earlier, but Awesome video! Only 2 games I'm not interested in, maybe 3 I'm a maybe on Ni no Kuni, but still great video!

Trails is the series of the decade for me. When I first picked up FC on the PSP to just kill time with back in 2012, I never thought it would come to define an entire decade of gaming for me. Ever since then it's just been one game after another that I've dutifully preordered and eagerly dumped all my free time into as soon as they release, and the scope of the games and series has simply gone well beyond anything I ever expected from it back then.
I didn't expect much when I started playing them in 2017. So glad I did. FC/SC (To me it's one game) might be my all time favorite. I'm on CS2 right now. CS1 was a little slow to get going but wow is it getting interesting.

They should have made it so you could change the difficulty of DQ11 after starting the game, I just went for normal difficulty thinking it would be well balanced, 60hrs in I was waiting for it to get difficult but nope, boringly easy and to hell if I'm going right back to the start to make it challenging.
First time watching your channel and it looks like I've found another person who loves turned-based as much as me because that's my bread and butter when it comes to JRPGs. I am okay with action (really depends on the game) and I don't like strategy (but am willing to give 3 Houses a chance). OMG Finally someone who likes guides! I am a completionist (generally) too and I honestly don't like missing stuff during a 1st playthrough. I really think the 2010s have been a great decade for JRPGs because for awhile, we were hardly getting any here in the west. Out of the ones listed here, only one I played (and is now one of my favs and got me to give Pokemon a try finally) was Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. This game, along with the PS3 version of Eternal Sonata, were my main reasons for getting the consul. I actually got it because I am Studio Ghibli fan and was expecting a charming story with fun chars and beautiful graphics. So yeah I love it! Loved it so much I got it again for the PS4 lol. OH! Have you heard of the Grandia Franchise? The first 2 games got PS4 ports, but you can only buy it online. I eventually plan on getting it since I have never played 1, and 2 is still one of my fav games of all time (it's #3, with Skies of Arcadia being #2, and Eternal Sonata being my fav).

I just recently purchased Ni No Kuni; Curse of the White Witch and I am in love! I've been a Ghibli fan since the 80's and have no idea why it took me this long to get the game. Everything is just magical and fills me with so much nostalgia...
I am glad I am not the only one who uses a guide now because I have no time for another playthrough. Sadly I can't get through Dragon Quest 9 for some reason. I'm not giving up but I'll probably have to restart it again because its been so long I have no clue where I was or how to play. Just got Dragon Quest 11 today so I can't wait to play it!!!
Excellent picks! I'd Dragon Quest XI is representative of a classic, epic JRPG, so it would be a primary contender for top JRPG of the decade for that reason.
Paul Hermosillo Haro never thought of Shulk as perfect, he is flawed, he also grows throughout the game and has some really good writing behind his character and amazing voice acting, I can’t say the same for Rex at all, but that’s an issue with xenoblade 2 in general, poor voice acting and story drag down a semi interesting character that at times feels like an exact carbon copy of Shulk
I was familiar with Dragon Quest, but never truly played one until XI. Absolutely loved it. Sylvando and Veronica quickly made my Top 10 JRPG protagonists of all time.

You're 100% right about Trails in the Sky and probably the only person I've seen who values it as much as I do, outside of people I was able to get to play it (they all loved it). I actually bought all 3 box sets in Japan when I was living there lol.

Berseria is amazing, it brought me back to the Tales series after years of not playing. I still don't understand how the weapon system works but I loved the cast, I loved the Villains, I loved the world and music. So good!
I have to disagree with you about the VITA. It had “Persona 3 Portable”, “Persona 4: Golden”, “Trails in the Sky 1&2”, “Trails of Cold Steel 1&2” and then almost all the other PSP rpg’s and tons of PS1 rpg’s (like “Suikoden II”. The VITA had two major issues in my opinion: the first, and biggest issue, was the seriously over-priced proprietary memory cards. The second was not having L2 and R2 buttons. If there was a system I felt was a waste of money it was the WII U. I literally bought it just for “Xenoblade Chronicles X” and “Tokyo Mirage Sessions”. While “Tokyo Mirage Sessions” wasn’t what I expected or wanted from an SMT & Fire Emblem crossover, it was still a good game and I’m glad it got a second chance on the Switch. Now if only “Xenoblade Chronicles X” and “Wind Waker HD” would get ported to Switch also I’d be a happy camper! And “Xenoblade Chronicles Remastered” looks AMAZING on the Switch!!!
Tbh Cold Steel 3 helped the arc get back up on its feet, almost to the point where if it weren't for Cold Steel 1 needing to set things up and the last cutscene (arguably the shrine cutscenes as well) in Cold Steel 2, I would have just told people to skip the first 2 games entirely and start at 3. I liked the fact they trimmed the main cast to less than half of what it was in the first 2 games, no unnecessary last dungeons (I'm honestly still confused why they felt the need to make the old schoolhouse the final dungeon twice and you fight the same final boss twice) and some really solid character moments and voice acting; I really liked Juna's and Ash's VAs in particular. Still salty about them rearranging parts of Crossbell and the dungeons there though
Finally, a reviewer I can trust. I dont give in to good graphics and voice acting either. When a games functionality, story, and combat system is below par, i dont give 2 cents about how good the graphics are. I'm also a fan of 2d. I think people confuse art and graphics.
That Wizard of Oz RPG has some good ideas- the labyrinth style dungeons, the unique trackpad movement, the crazy world of Oz to pull source material from. Sadly it was never fleshed out. It was as if someone lovingly built a minimum viable product to showcase the idea and the publisher misunderstood and published it as is instead. It desperately needed more interesting dungeons, more enemy variety, more spell variety and a bit of balancing to make spells more viable.
dq9 and ninokuni are my bitches. i love them so damn much. thank you fr putting them on this list! the others... i havent played, thought i am starting dq11. dq9s customization characters is so damn cool. choosing their skills too. and ninokuni, yo, that brat oliver, is so damn lovable even if hes like, a 5 year old wizard. lol

Props to Dragon "Warrior" for maintaining an artful graphics style instead of trying to be pretend reality. I strongly prefer that style. Games like Ori and even the new Mario are how it can be done.
Excellent video - you actually make me wanna try Xenoblade chronicles because Im hesitant with that title but it looks gorgeous. As for best looking RPG so far for me - thats Ni No Kuni. Very lovable title. As for the overall best RPG so far this decade - Legends Heroes - Cold Steel Series. Man, this game is long and epic and best of all - oozing with character development and plot twists for JRPG fanatics! I'm still on Episode 2 damn it. While im taking a break off Cold Steel, I'm playing Dragon Quest 11 S - Elusive Age - damn, its a fine time to be back to this great series since DragonQuest 8 I left off in.

Tales of innocence r has a translation patch you can add to the vita or pstv if you have it hacked to play. Easy to do and worth it, there are an abundance of games that have been fan translated because they never made it to the west for the vita.

Xenoblade Chronicles is one of those rare games that only come around maybe once a generation. It was something special that was only hindered by the Wii. So excited for the Switch remaster.

Go with the 3ds remake it's the same game with extras. And I have to say for me it is my favorite 3ds game, beating out the bravely series and a link between worlds.

This is not a new game, this is the same game from 2012 running 720p with inconsistently low resolution, in addition to lowish texture quality. The remaster was disapointing they've pretty much only polished up the main character models and added a epilogue for full price
jfray G. The remaster might have been disappointing, but the game itself certainly wasn’t. It was my first time playing it and it was completely worth it for me. Even if the remaster wasn’t as great as others, the game itself is still intact (unlike another remake)

@@kr1me2000 That explains a lot. Three Houses is more like the older Fire Emblems on the GBA, Gamecube and Wii story wise. The only fault was the week system it bored me like Persona dose in the aspect. I find the people who only played the DS ones hate the older (better) type of Fire Emblem personally I hated Awakening and Fates. Echos was good, but that was also a remake of an older game.

It is up there no doubt. Persona 5 is definitely among the top JRPGs of all time and I have played a lot of JRPGs over the years. Definitely one of the best stories. Dragon Quest 5 also comes to mind in that regard.
Persona its a waifu animu sim rpg. SMT Its hardcore philosophic demon summoning dungeon crawling rpg where you kill god and lucifer to become a god or a demon king. They have a different tatget audience but still loved both. The dating sim in persona is still anoying for me mostly cause all the girls in persona 5 are ugly for me
Don't forget the Digital Devil Saga series so under rated. By the way Persona 3 was way better than P5
Xenoblade is by far my favorite game of this decade every game system intertwined beautifully for a wonderful gaming experience that I will never forget

@@michaelk639 Characters and Monster Autoattack when in Range and you get to use various skills much like in MMO's.
Skills effects changes/improves with your positioning and in what order you use them.
Most of the time it's a stat check really, but if you don't grind too much it's quite a challenge.
Combat may look boring in vids, but I assure you it's super fun of you play yourself.

While I haven't played as many modern RPGs in the 2010s (I've been spending time catching up on classics) but I must say Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is my game of the decade. It just captured my heart and I love its world and characters.
A few others are of course the original Xenoblade, Mario & Luigi Dream Team (which I actually didn't play til this year) and I can promise you, I'll be spending some quality time with all the games on this list

DQ XI was fantastic. I saw Octopath in your intro and had hoped to see it on your list, but since it came out the same year as DQ XI, I can see why it didn’t make the cut. Keep up the great work, man.

Octopath Traveller is a game I really wanted to like, but it seems a lot of games that bulk on up RPG battle mechanics too much tend to feel burdensome after a time. First couple of hours is the honeymoon period: "this battle system is awesome" - hour 3-8 is the denial period: "Wish these battles are over, but at least I like the battle system, right?" then over that it's either "I'm glad there's an auto-battle" or "Let's just get this game over with!"
Unfortunately, because it's against what I want to enjoy, I find it is the slick and simplistic tried and true mechanics that tend to be the games I can play for dozens of hours with. Xenoblade, easy and snappy, Dragon Quest easy and snappy, Final Fantasy the same... but then Square's "B-games" for lack of a better term, but Bravely Default, Crystal Chronicles, I am Setsuna, and Octopath Traveler all have these gimmicks that seem really fun at first; but, burdensome after engaging with them over and over again.
There definitely lots of wester RPGs that deserve to be on this list as well. Even based on your criteria. I agree with others that this video should be top JRPGs. Not RPG

It's such a shame the ending was rushed. The Xillia cast is one of the very best in video games and the skits were consistently brilliant across both games.

2015 - Xenoblade Chronicles X (easily my favourite RPG of the decade, also the only game besides Earthbound I really played on the Wii U for any serious time).
2016 - Stardew Valley
2017 - Xenoblade Chronicles 2
2018 - Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna the Golden Country (it was a weak year, but this one was good)
2019 - Final Fantasy 7, 8, and X were a gigantic treat for me on Switch (while I played these all many times before, having them on a Nintendo console is so much more sweet). I also have yet to play DQ11 because I know a family member picked it up for me for Christmas

I totally agree with you. Sure it has its flaws like the story but the Soundtrack is amazing, the battle system is fluid, and the world is gorgeous. Here in Germany Xenoblade Chronicles X still has way too many haters for the wrong reasons.
Xenoblade Chronicles is hands down my favorite RPG franchise AND my favorite Nintendo franchise ( though EarthBound remains my favorite game of all time ). All 3 games thus far have been among the best experiences I ever had with a game, between the story & characters, the incredible soundtracks ( the lack of any X songs in Smash feels so very wrong ), the gameplay and the worlds we explore they can't be beat IMO. Hopefully X gets a Switch port though...it very much deserves a 2nd chance, I know I'd happily buy it again ( I did but the original Xenoblade 3 times now across Wii, New 3DS and Switch )

I played radiant historia in a hacked ds... yes, I feel guilty but it was so amazing. The narrative was so thrilling. Loved it. You can consider as well I am Setsuna from tokyo rpg factory which recovers the essence of the old style games.

Great list! It’s funny to think that if it wasn’t for you, I, and others, that we almost didn’t get “Xenoblade Chronicles” here in America! Especially now that it is one of the top JRPG series and its sequels were important titles for the Wii U and Switch! I love the Trails series, I really hope the Trails in the Sky trilogy and Crossbell arc along with the Cold games make it to Switch so more people can enjoy them. Personally I found the first “Trails of Cold Steel” game to be faster paced and more interesting than part 2, but both are incredible games!

I like your insight a lot, and most of all, you deserve my respect because unlike the average self-professed "rpg fan" (ie. any 2019 internet gaming normie), you actually show it and know what you're talking about. You often give these overlooked games a chance to shine, and you do it with a reason. I've had the trails games in my steam wishlist for 3/4 years now, and your mentions (along with some of your lets plays) make me want to start digging into them right now.
I'd also agree with one of the comments in here, but in a different way. More than a "top 10 tales games", I'd like you release a "Tales of Tierlist" video. Where you go through each and every one of them, and put them in a specific level when compared against each other. Because I'd like to hear your opinion on the so-called bad Tales games moreso than the good ones (because everyone talks about those anyway). And given how big the Tales of stash is, I'd be hard pressed to think there isn't any foul-smelling crap among them.

Personally Xenoblade is my RPG of the Decade. However one that I feel gets overlooked on the Wii is "The Last Story".
The character designs are some of my favorites, I love the music and story, but I will admit the combat might put some people off. Still if you haven't played it I 100% recommend it.

The Legend of Heroes franchise is my favorite JRPG franchise ever. And I say that as a veteran RPG player like you who grew up in the NES era. Discovered it in my late 20's and it probably single-handedly rekindled my love of JRPGs.

Man, 2017 has to of been my favorite year of rpgs. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was the winner for me, but there were plenty of other games I liked. Tales of Beseria, Gravity Rush 2, Yakuza 0, and Digimon Next Order hit in January. Whilst not what one might call 'RPG,' March had Nier Automata and Legend of Zelda: BotW, which I would like to mention. The Switch obviously dropped then too. April brought major attention to RPGs with Persona 5. June had FFXIV: Stormblood expansion for MMORPG fans. September had Trails of Cold Steel 3, Ys VIII, and Danganronpa V3 (Also not an RPG, but notable). Pokemon Ultra Sun/Moon in November. And obviously, to close on the year, Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
2017 just had so much to choose from.
BotW is not an RPG. It's Action Adventure. The only exception was Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.

But there's no Megami Tensei game :/ It's a good top. But sadly not that good. Seriously, SMT IV is one the best jrpgs I've ever played. It introduced me to SMT series which it's now my favorite one. Most of the games in the top are outstanding too tho.
I agree about Cold Steel 3, easily the best JRPG of the year. I had high expectations for it going in and yet it fully exceeded them. Outside the fantastic story and characters that par for the course for the trails series, The battle system was improved so much from the solid battle system of the first two games (hell, I even gushed about how they improved the damn fishing) and the pacing was fantastic (I spent 120+ hours on the game but boy did it not feel like it). Glad to see you cooled down from the ending lol (though I understand, it took me a bit of time to process the ending).
Also, I think I might be the only person on the planet who thinks cold steel 1 is better paced then cold steel 2. That middle section of CS 2 really dragged on and on for me, culminating in that tedious as hell Zemurian ore quest. CS 1 never dragged for me that bad personally.
Yer I can see that but I think the reason I like cs2 over 1 is cause it just feels faster maybe cause there's no thors sections to slow down the pase. Also cs2 gives me Sara and Sharon for more then an hr so yer
I mean a lot of people view CS2 as the worst trails game because its such a mess. Divertissement just fits weirdly into the flow of the story and reverie corridor is just filler to have a second final boss when infernal castle was a good way to stop with some epilogue telling us the things happening in crossbell.
The entire second act also reminds me of SC chapter 8.
CS1 and CS2 could've probably been 1 game if they trimmed a few scenes that weren't essential.
Going from azure to cs1 and cs2 must give a man some crazy whiplash.
@@luminous3558 While agree that CS 2 is the worst Trails game, It's still a great game (that suffers from pacing issues but I also think SC also suffers from pacing issues as well). Even the worst Trails game is better than the most games (I'd personally play CS 2 over any Final Fantasy game).
DQ XI S is easily my favorite JRPG of the decade. Coming from someone that started with VII,and has played every DQ game to date,I'd agree with what you said personally.
V still will always be my favorite DQ though.
I think it's great that I've either played, and beaten, or want to play most of these! Except the 2 Tales of games I guess, I've never been much of a Tales of fan. I do have Tales of the Abyss on 3DS, but most the time I don't care. I'm pretty much 100% in agreement with you about Dragon Quest! I love Dragon Quest IX, and the series in general, but I probably wouldn't put it as my number 1 just because of some games we missed.
Edit: OK sorry I forgot to say this earlier, but Awesome video! Only 2 games I'm not interested in, maybe 3 I'm a maybe on Ni no Kuni, but still great video!

Trails is the series of the decade for me. When I first picked up FC on the PSP to just kill time with back in 2012, I never thought it would come to define an entire decade of gaming for me. Ever since then it's just been one game after another that I've dutifully preordered and eagerly dumped all my free time into as soon as they release, and the scope of the games and series has simply gone well beyond anything I ever expected from it back then.
I didn't expect much when I started playing them in 2017. So glad I did. FC/SC (To me it's one game) might be my all time favorite. I'm on CS2 right now. CS1 was a little slow to get going but wow is it getting interesting.

They should have made it so you could change the difficulty of DQ11 after starting the game, I just went for normal difficulty thinking it would be well balanced, 60hrs in I was waiting for it to get difficult but nope, boringly easy and to hell if I'm going right back to the start to make it challenging.
I hope you try it with stronger enemies sooner or later. It makes the game legitimately terrifying.
@@rabbyd542 yh the act 2 final boss and the act 3 one were a fun challenge (I only used stronger enemies).
I never finished it, but Persona 5 was a great JRPG. And I loved Final Fantasy XV and spent over 100 hours to complete it with the Platinum Trophy. :)

First time watching your channel and it looks like I've found another person who loves turned-based as much as me because that's my bread and butter when it comes to JRPGs. I am okay with action (really depends on the game) and I don't like strategy (but am willing to give 3 Houses a chance).
OMG Finally someone who likes guides! I am a completionist (generally) too and I honestly don't like missing stuff during a 1st playthrough.
I really think the 2010s have been a great decade for JRPGs because for awhile, we were hardly getting any here in the west. Out of the ones listed here, only one I played (and is now one of my favs and got me to give Pokemon a try finally) was Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. This game, along with the PS3 version of Eternal Sonata, were my main reasons for getting the consul. I actually got it because I am Studio Ghibli fan and was expecting a charming story with fun chars and beautiful graphics. So yeah I love it! Loved it so much I got it again for the PS4 lol.
OH! Have you heard of the Grandia Franchise? The first 2 games got PS4 ports, but you can only buy it online. I eventually plan on getting it since I have never played 1, and 2 is still one of my fav games of all time (it's #3, with Skies of Arcadia being #2, and Eternal Sonata being my fav).

For some reason I was enchanted by Torna the Golden Country; loved the music and roaming around beating the shit out of everything in sight lol. Good choices for the list 👌👍, you have good taste
I just recently purchased Ni No Kuni; Curse of the White Witch and I am in love! I've been a Ghibli fan since the 80's and have no idea why it took me this long to get the game. Everything is just magical and fills me with so much nostalgia...
I am glad I am not the only one who uses a guide now because I have no time for another playthrough.
Sadly I can't get through Dragon Quest 9 for some reason. I'm not giving up but I'll probably have to restart it again because its been so long I have no clue where I was or how to play.
Just got Dragon Quest 11 today so I can't wait to play it!!!

Radiant Historia is SUCH good game. I have not been sucked into a story like this since rogue galaxy or some of the 90s RPGs.

Excellent picks! I'd Dragon Quest XI is representative of a classic, epic JRPG, so it would be a primary contender for top JRPG of the decade for that reason.
Tales of Hearts R is my favorite Tales game. It's good to see it get some love. Loved the Bravely series as well.

Im with you, I think that Rex is by far a better protagonist than Shulk, Shulk is too "perfect" if we can say it like that
Paul Hermosillo Haro never thought of Shulk as perfect, he is flawed, he also grows throughout the game and has some really good writing behind his character and amazing voice acting, I can’t say the same for Rex at all, but that’s an issue with xenoblade 2 in general, poor voice acting and story drag down a semi interesting character that at times feels like an exact carbon copy of Shulk
I was familiar with Dragon Quest, but never truly played one until XI. Absolutely loved it. Sylvando and Veronica quickly made my Top 10 JRPG protagonists of all time.

You're 100% right about Trails in the Sky and probably the only person I've seen who values it as much as I do, outside of people I was able to get to play it (they all loved it). I actually bought all 3 box sets in Japan when I was living there lol.

Berseria is amazing, it brought me back to the Tales series after years of not playing.
I still don't understand how the weapon system works but I loved the cast, I loved the Villains, I loved the world and music. So good!

I have to disagree with you about the VITA. It had “Persona 3 Portable”, “Persona 4: Golden”, “Trails in the Sky 1&2”, “Trails of Cold Steel 1&2” and then almost all the other PSP rpg’s and tons of PS1 rpg’s (like “Suikoden II”. The VITA had two major issues in my opinion: the first, and biggest issue, was the seriously over-priced proprietary memory cards. The second was not having L2 and R2 buttons. If there was a system I felt was a waste of money it was the WII U. I literally bought it just for “Xenoblade Chronicles X” and “Tokyo Mirage Sessions”. While “Tokyo Mirage Sessions” wasn’t what I expected or wanted from an SMT & Fire Emblem crossover, it was still a good game and I’m glad it got a second chance on the Switch. Now if only “Xenoblade Chronicles X” and “Wind Waker HD” would get ported to Switch also I’d be a happy camper! And “Xenoblade Chronicles Remastered” looks AMAZING on the Switch!!!
I've never played a a DQ game before, but I played and loved DQ XI for 170 hours so far!
Was hoping to see some respect for Octopath Traveler and P5R. Those 2 games revived my love for JRPGs
This man is something else. He’s played every localized rpg released and never watches anime? Even my grandma has watched ghibli films.
Tbh Cold Steel 3 helped the arc get back up on its feet, almost to the point where if it weren't for Cold Steel 1 needing to set things up and the last cutscene (arguably the shrine cutscenes as well) in Cold Steel 2, I would have just told people to skip the first 2 games entirely and start at 3.
I liked the fact they trimmed the main cast to less than half of what it was in the first 2 games, no unnecessary last dungeons (I'm honestly still confused why they felt the need to make the old schoolhouse the final dungeon twice and you fight the same final boss twice) and some really solid character moments and voice acting; I really liked Juna's and Ash's VAs in particular.
Still salty about them rearranging parts of Crossbell and the dungeons there though
Finally, a reviewer I can trust. I dont give in to good graphics and voice acting either. When a games functionality, story, and combat system is below par, i dont give 2 cents about how good the graphics are. I'm also a fan of 2d. I think people confuse art and graphics.
That Wizard of Oz RPG has some good ideas- the labyrinth style dungeons, the unique trackpad movement, the crazy world of Oz to pull source material from. Sadly it was never fleshed out. It was as if someone lovingly built a minimum viable product to showcase the idea and the publisher misunderstood and published it as is instead. It desperately needed more interesting dungeons, more enemy variety, more spell variety and a bit of balancing to make spells more viable.

dq9 and ninokuni are my bitches. i love them so damn much. thank you fr putting them on this list! the others... i havent played, thought i am starting dq11. dq9s customization characters is so damn cool. choosing their skills too. and ninokuni, yo, that brat oliver, is so damn lovable even if hes like, a 5 year old wizard. lol

DQ11 was so close to being my favorite game in the series knocking down 8 but then the post game happened where some major character development got thrown out the window

Xenoblade will get a semi-remake on the Switch this year, there's no need to track down the original version.

Props to Dragon "Warrior" for maintaining an artful graphics style instead of trying to be pretend reality. I strongly prefer that style. Games like Ori and even the new Mario are how it can be done.
Excellent video - you actually make me wanna try Xenoblade chronicles because Im hesitant with that title but it looks gorgeous. As for best looking RPG so far for me - thats Ni No Kuni. Very lovable title. As for the overall best RPG so far this decade - Legends Heroes - Cold Steel Series. Man, this game is long and epic and best of all - oozing with character development and plot twists for JRPG fanatics! I'm still on Episode 2 damn it. While im taking a break off Cold Steel, I'm playing Dragon Quest 11 S - Elusive Age - damn, its a fine time to be back to this great series since DragonQuest 8 I left off in.
