Way back when l was a teen.. Carl Perkins and the other Sun performers were current. A band in my home town had a dance hall in a tourist area and played Sun hits nearly exclusively. My girl friend and l would go there every weekend in the summer and dance for hours ! When we danced round and round to songs like Honey Don't it felt as is our feet wrere 6 inches off the floor and never touched ground while the music was playing ! Wonderful memories ... Thank You Carl !!!

Hearing them talk about Carl. It put a lump in my throat. Thinking how much I loved my dad. Who was my hero & best friend, that never gave up fighting family court, until he got full custody. Rescuing me from an abusive life I'd hid from him for over 14yrs.
I lost dad way too soon and have never got over it, but I'm glad he got to see & hear me play guitar and sing before he passed. A short 8mo's after being diagnosed with stage 3, pulmonary carcinoma, that metastasized to the brain.
He never got to see me do a live
performance, but I'll always have that memory of playing some of his favorite songs to him, and the smile on his face. In that tiny motel room in Van Horn TX. That was 32yrs ago in 1990.

Carl Perkins was greatly talented. Thank God we got to experience his rockabilly music and great songwriting. My favorite Beatle, George Harrison loved him and sang a song at his funeral. George was very sick from cancer at the time, but he loved his friend enough to do a tribute of True Love. He had a beautiful wife. Rest In Peace Carl. You are my king. You were so much better looking than any other singer back then. You were also very humble. That is more important than all success in the world. ❤️🌹❤️

I just wanted to add my two cents worth to the events in AMORY MISS on 24th November 1955. I was there. I was working as a GOFER for Charlie and I had front row seats. I met the complete crew and I was an employee of the VARSITY THEATER at the time. I also worked as a none paid employ of WAMY, awaiting to enter the NAVY. The story is worth watching. I also went to school with JIMMY DOBY, I that enjoyed my viewing of this site. I have told the story 1,000's of time and the only thing I couldn't remember, it was the month. I knew it was the FALL of 1955 but had forgot it was thee 24th. There is one person that I didn't see mentioned and it was the manager of the VARSITY THEATER, Ken Roberts. He had me work the event as a GO FER and I got front row seats. Watch this, it is great. BOBBY (BOB) JOHNSON, USNAVY RETIRED.

Maybe that car accident was the best thing that ever happened to Carl Perkins. He's a hero of mine, and I have my copy of Blue Suede Shoes on the Sun label, and his first album. I was a teenager in 1971 when I REALLY discovered his Rockabilly Music. Had the lure of Fame trapped him - as it did me, as an '80s SoCal new wave star - he wouldn't have been the humble man of God he was. I pray to be half the man and friend of us all that Carl Perkins was. Fame will never buy you humility. Carl, like myself, learned it the hard way. Well, now he's singin' and pickin' alongside the angels - and Carl, God has always been proud of you.

Elvis got the the smash hit off of "Blue Suede Shoes" but Carl Perkins wrote the song. Carl Perkins was a very underated guitarist. but he caught Eric Clapton's attention on the Johnny Cash show. when he and Derrick and the dominos were guests on the show. Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley, and Jerry Lee Lewis, were all on the Sun records label. and Sam Phillips brought all these fantastic musicians to the forefront of Rock and Roll. even though Sam Phillips was particular about the kinds music he wanted from his musicians. Carl Perkins had to make a decision to go with Country music or stay as a Rock and Roll musician. because he was also a good county music musician like his friend Johnny Cash. but he was really Rock and Roll musician more like Roy Orbison. where as Johnny Cash went on to be a country music icon. but no matter what anyone says Carl Perkins belongs right up there with his fellow musicians. George Harrison thought the world of him that's a God damm good compliment right there.

This is a great tribute and Carl speaks so humbly I was in tears at times. He had a great love for not just music but the people that needed it in their hard lives as a release. Its great to see Lee Rocker and Setzer make reflections because it was Setzer who turned me on to Carl Perkins as an influence for the Stray Cats. I listen to Carl's music more than most other Rockabilly now.

I still play "Matchbox" in every set. Can't NOT play it. This is where I live.
I love a lot of different music, but this is my home...and Carl built it...

As a kid in the 50's I can remember my brother had Carl's Blue Suede Shoes' record which I really dug. Not knowing what happened to him I wondered why he fell off the scene because he was obviously really good. I was more into R & B but now having learned to appreciate many different types of music I can appreciate his contribution. I was very touched by this documentary and his sincerity. My God rest his soul.Amen.

Yes, he says he is 65, meaning when he sat for these interviews, he had just months to live, and most likely he knew it, which possibly explains why he wells up here and there as he speaks. RIP KING OF ROCKABILLY

@@musicitykidd8768 It seems fame never went to his head. I worked with a guy whose wife rode a school bus with him. She said you would not believe the poverty he came from. There were few places poorer than Lake County during the depression, but even poor people considered the Perkins family poor. I'm glad he prospered and found happiness.

Man, what a great interview. This man is genuine and humble. Almost, I say almost, almost, almost had me in tears a couple times, lol. Seriously, Carl Perkins is well known and well loved and respected but he still is underrated and under appreciated. His life would make a great movie and it would be true. I've always appreciated his music and such but now I really appreciate his life.

Carl says he never had another hit like Blue Suede Shoes, but he did. Flip it over and Honey Don't rocked like none other, Honey Don't is a classic as much as Blue Suede Shoes. And reading of his life, what a man, gentleman in every way I love this man!!! RIP Carl. The king of Rockabilly!!!

    • @RockandrollNegro
      @RockandrollNegro Рік тому

_Honey Don't_ was a hit in its own right, but it never hit the Top 10. Carl's two biggest hits were _Blue Suede Shoes_ (#1 on the Top Ten) and _Boppin' The Blues_ (#7). His second biggest hit as a songwriter was _Daddy Sang Bass_ (#1 on the Country Chart) which he wrote for Johnny Cash.
Perkins wrote hundreds of great songs, but none were the massive, global, culturally significant hit that _Blue Suede Shoes_ was and is. Even Elvis struggled to top Carl's version... it took Elvis 58 years to sell as many copies of his version that Carl sold in six months.
