For those of you wondering why I’m using the Sea Witch painting by Frank Frazetta in the background of the video, it’s because it was used as the interior art alongside the short story when it featured in Omni Magazine. Don’t really know why they made that decision, but it's the only visual piece associated with this story that I had to work with. Just thought I’d mention it because I forgot to credit the artist in the video. My bad. Anyways, I hope you all enjoyed this little early Christmas gift. I wanted to at least make one more video before the end of the year (aside from another project that will be released next week). Thank you all so much for all of the support and love for the channel and of course, getting me to 20k subs! I’m grateful for this milestone! Merry Christmas to everyone and have a happy New Year.
Btw, for those wondering, the story probably takes place in an O’Neill cylinder-a massive rotating drum filled with whatever you want really. It’s a great habitat design and pretty common in hard science fiction stories. In Gerard K. O’Neill’s original designs they were always referred to as islands (ie: island 1, 2, 3, etc) so that’s why Silverberg calls it an island. So it’s not an actual island in space, in case someone was wondering that lol. The habitat is also orbiting in the earth-moon Lagrange points. Basically orbital anchor points, perfect for large amounts of urban scale habitats. If you’re interested in O’Neill cylinders or other orbital infrastructure, I’d recommend Isaac Arthur’s UA-cam channel as well as the original book: the High Frontier: Human Colonies in Space by Gerard K. O’Neill. Also the Orion’s Arm Universe Project has some cool examples of not only O’Neill cylinders but also Dyson spheres/swarms, ringworlds and other fascinating ideas. Hope this helps.
@@itszeronizer597 Also in the end of the movie Interstellar and I guess technically Mass Effect in the case of the Citadel but I’m not sure you could call that an O’Neill cylinder.
It's always interesting to find traces of later fiction in earlier more obscure works. The Mokolé (were-reptiles from the World of Darkness line of RPGs) have the ability to share memories, thoughts, feelings directly with others. They use this amongst each other to communicate across species lines and to keep their culture and history alive even all the way back to the Cretaceous. But when they use it on non-Mokolé, the recipient can "overload" on the memories and lose their own personality in the process which leads to dissociative identity disorder. So the psychic dinosaur cult lives on outside of this story.
I’m so glad you enjoyed my suggestion! Like I said on the Discord, I still can’t decide if the story is actually *good* or not, but nobody can deny it’s at least an interesting idea.
I recently heard of a strange late 19th/early 20th century short story about a regenerating plesiosaur that was found deep in a cave, which then leads to a plesiosaur regenerating around a human brain from a scientist it killed. It leads to similar tale of mental degradation. I can't remember the name of it, but Richard Fallon did talk about it in episode 369 of the podcast 'I Know Dino'. He also wrote a book about similar stories in his book 'Dinosaurs in Victorian Pop Culture'.
I like this story a lot actually, I like how it taps into the human fear of being lesser than nature, how we act like we have conquered and understand the natural world, but at the same time fear it
I feel they prob had something special planned out, considering the super intelligence the dinosaurs have. Idk for sure though but I think it’s purposefully left open ended like that, like whatever horrors that are soon to come are ambiguous
It's entirely possible that David Koepp stole that San Diego Event from this story, considering that Spielberg originally wanted to adapt The Lost World a lot closer to the book, but Koepp insisted that he had written his own "original" story for the Jurassic Park sequel and convinced Spielberg to go with it.
My bedtime reading consists entirely of Sci-Fi short stories from 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s (anthologies are two a penny from Kindle), and I've read this story a few times. Never suspected it was from as late as 1980 - I imagine it is included in those anthologies because Silverberg is more associated with the 1960s. And because it's a great story! Was going to say that since the 'dino park' is at L5, then it is some sort of orbital habitat stationed at the Lagrange 5 orbital position. Uses less fuel to keep on station being there. But others have mentioned this two years ago!
Ikr! When I first read through that San Diego part, I had to double check the date, because I thought it was wrong at first. As far as the song goes, it's called Samsara by Nihilore. Link to the song is in the description.
@@DinoDiego16 I thought it was maybe in the far future of the Jurassic universe at first, until you mentioned the date. It's kind of like a Dune and Star Wars situation I guess lol. Thank you so much for getting back to me 🙂
Congratulations Diego! You have great content and I'm so happy to have had the opportunity to work with you this year for Paleo Rewind! I would love to do more work with you in the future if that interests you. Merry Christmas!🙂

I want an fps DOOM style game where you have to save earth from an invasion of evil intelligent cultist dinosaurs and fanatical human followers. That would be pretty rad if you ask me.
Are you familiar with Thomas Hopp’s Dinosaur Wars series? It’s basically a cross between Jurassic Park, Star Wars, and an alien invasion story…except the “aliens” are dinosaurs that survived the K-Pg extinction. I find these novels interesting because they contain a number of similar elements to the upcoming film, Jurassic World: Dominion. One of which is that humans must learn to coexist with dinosaurs living among them. There is even a scene from the second (?) book featuring a mosasaur attacking a surfer, which is weird because this book came out YEARS before Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom! In addition, the books feature fully-feathered dinosaurs, which is awesome!
Probably was a last minute choice, but regardless, its nice to be included. I realize the content I do has left me kind of in the middle of certain areas of the overall paleo community. I'm not a dinosaur gaming channel, nor am I a paleontology channel, or a Jurassic Park channel, but I'm somewhere in the middle, because I do a little bit of everything.
Yeah, he loves this trope, The Face of the Waters is another one with similar themes of ecosystem that has psychic connection between it's parts and how people introduced to it given a chance to conform and be a part of it.
Very interesting story. Honestly though it's kind of hilarious to think that it's actually true. Her grandiose blather won't really go anywhere. Once it gets out what she's doing with these dinosaurs, someone will just say "Well then, Our Lady of the Sauropods, meet my good friend Tactical Nuke."
I’m guessing as a scientist she had to have some idea of that happening, it’s all headcannon on my part but I suspect their plans for domination would’ve had to have been more nuanced than a straight up attack
I've got a good suggestion for a future video: the novel CARNOSAUR by Harry Adam Knight and the three films based on it (four, if you count a film titled RAPTOR).
Sapient dinosaurs in fiction: Have culture, build civilization, make arts, conquer worlds. Sapient dinosaurs in real life: ua-cam.com/video/wxGyL6RUqpA/v-deo.html
I started watching your videos last night after finding your Disney’s Dinosaur review and can’t stop watching. This content is amazing! I noticed you’re in a niche that doesn’t fit the other channels. Don’t give up! I especially liked this video and the Dinosaur versus Aliens video. Once again, great content. I’d love to see you review Primitive War by Ethan Pettus. It’s a fairy new series of books and comics taking place in the Cold War era and has dinosaurs in it. Has some super cool stuff!
Wel I agree with them being more than animals. I mean, in my stories dinosaurs aren’t just instinctual animals, but thinking feeling creatures that are capable of human feelings in their own way
If you're taking recommendations of fiction with sapient dinosaurs I recommend the Quintaglio Ascension trilogy (Far-seer, Fossil Hunter, and Foreigner) by Robert J sawyer. A book series about a civilization of sapient dinosaurs descended from specimens extracted from ancient earth by aliens and moved to an extra solar moon.
Jokes on her, we learned how to throw stones so hard, we can create temporary suns. Shes fucked. Seriously though, its a very cool story and i really enjoyed the video on it. Keep it up!
I think this would make a pretty interesting film or short animated series. Jurassic Park kind of having a strangle hold on the genetically resurrected dinosaurs thing would pose a problem. That, and the fact you can't make anything nowadays where a female lead isn't half naked the entire time without certain people complaining about it being "woke feminist propaganda" or some other dumb shit like that.
